What our customers say about their holidays

    • Kathleen - Verified booking

Although we are regular visitors to Grasmere and have stayed at other cottages or hotels, this was our first visit to Field Foot Cottage.

We chose this cottage because we had our dog with us on this occasion. The cottage is not easy to find as it is hidden away in a side lane by the Lakes Art Shop near the Co-Op store. It is, however, central and in a quiet location. As other reviewers have said, there is a covered parking space for 1 car behind the cottage, but the space is tight and it takes some manouvering to get the car in. The cottage itself met all our needs. The kitchen is a reasonable size with good facilities; excellent range of utensils, effective cooker, dishwasher and washing machine. The living room is small but cosy and with good maps / books for local walks. We used the bedroom in the attic conversion with a large space, comfortable bed and good en suite. However, the staircase from the first floor to the attic conversion was steep and may be an issue for those less certain on their feet. The central heating was effective, although we often had to override the programmed temperatures. We were disappointed that there was no handwash provided and only one toilet roll per bathroom. Fortunately, we had brought our own which was just as well as the Co-Op store had run out of stocks in the current climate. Also, we were unable to find an Information Booklet in the property. This meant that we got to use the central heating, cooker, washing machine and dishwasher through trial and error which is not ideal. Also although not an issue for us, first time visitors to Grasmere would appreciate information / recommendations on local restaurants / tea rooms etc Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return again

Firstly, I’d like to say that we had a great stay and do plan to come back.

However there were a number of things that could do with improving. The tv in the downstairs bedroom didn’t work. The automatic lights in the shared downstairs bathrooms turn off when you’re in the shower, and sometimes didn’t turn on at all. The heating knob in the downstairs shower was broken. The fire in the sitting room was broken. The dishwasher was full of dirty dishes on arrival. In general the level of cleanliness could have been a lot better. There were no mattress protectors on the beds, nor pillow protectors on most of the pillows. The sofa is a bit tired and stained. The location of the property and the size of the property was perfect for what we needed, and we did have an enjoyable stay but given that some of my points have been made by other reviewers it does make me wonder if things will have been improved upon when we return next year. Fingers crossed!

The setting of the property is super with sheep and the river just over the lane and the position, an enjoyable 25 minute stroll into Ambleside, was a plus.

The property is very spacious and worked well for a group with a spot to sit and enjoy the view from the kitchen diner in addition to the large living room. As mentioned in previous reviews, the property could do with updating. For example the little balcony, which should be a feature of the property, was uninviting with peeling paintwork, leaves blown in and scattered furniture with a green tinge to it. Nothing that a lick of paint, a good clean and some ‘dressing’ couldn’t fix. In it’s prime this was a beautiful, spacious Lakeland house thoughtfully presented, decorated with farrow & ball throughout. The biggest issue - also mentioned in other reviews - was the boiler. The noise, intermittently through the night, was intolerable from the main upstairs bedroom. We will not return to this property.

After a very disrupted and long journey from the South on Saturday, it was such a relief to arrive at Knipefold Barn , thanks to the excellent directions we found it at the first attempt. Wow ! What an amazing place ! Everything we could wish for; spotlessly clean, beautifully and intelligently designed and thoughtfully equipped - a real home from home ! Having let out our own holiday home in SW France for several years, we fully appreciate the hard work involved in preparing and maintaining a high-end property for clients, who vary between taking care of and having respect for your property to sadly, the other end of the scale ! We are of the former variety ! We have only been here one night so far but already looking forward to coming back at some point !

Overall a great property and excellent location.

The house was clean and comfortable and was always warm with an abundance of hot water. We very much enjoyed our visit. We were disappointed that there was no washing up liquid, only one toilet roll per toilet and only two bin bags available on arrival. I would not expect to have to bring/buy washing up liquid and bin bags and there should be at least one spare toilet roll per toilet for a one week stay. The provision of drinking glasses was random and insufficient. Some of the lamps did not work (importantly the reading lamp in the window of the kitchen/diner). No bedside lamp on the left side of the large (downstairs) double bedroom. The light switch in one of the bedrooms did not work but Lakelovers responded very quickly to fix this, which was excellent.
