Pollys Cottage in Elterwater is praised for its superb location and cosy, well-appointed interiors, offering a secure garden ideal for dogs. While some guests noted maintenance issues, the charm of the cottage and its cleanliness generally received positive comments. The proximity to local amenities and the beauty of the surrounding area make it a favoured choice for a relaxing stay.
The cottage is often described as clean and well-maintained, with specific mentions of it being 'spotlessly clean'. However, there are isolated complaints about a dirty rug and a found sock, suggesting room for improvement in thoroughness.
The location is consistently lauded for its beauty, convenience, and proximity to local attractions, making it an outstanding feature of the property.
Guests find the cottage cosy and the beds comfortable, though there are remarks about some beds being unsuitable for adults and the cottage being cold at times, indicating variability in comfort levels.
While the cottage is equipped with necessary amenities, recurring issues with the log burner, dishwasher, and heating are noted. Maintenance concerns, such as broken tiles and faulty appliances, suggest a need for attention to facilities.
There is insufficient information regarding the provision of gifts or extra thoughtful touches for guests, so a score cannot be accurately provided.
Pollys Cottage is a double fronted, 17th century Lakeland cottage tucked away in the village of Elterwater. Ideally placed in the Langdale Valley Pollys Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the hidden gems of the Lakes while being just a short drive from Ambleside.
Enter the cottage into the spacious sitting room with cosy woodburning stove, a lovely way to relax after a day on the nearby fells. Through to the country kitchen there is also a generous dining area and access out to the shared garden with furnished patio. Upstairs there are three bedrooms; 2 doubles and 1 single. Two couples will spread out easily here and families will enjoy a perfect location for an active holiday. To the first floor there is also a bathroom with bath, shower over, basin and WC.
Walk the Langdale Pikes straight from the door of the lovely property. The Britannia Inn is located in the centre of the village, providing Lakeland ales and home-cooked hearty meals. From here you can walk along to Chesters by the River, a delightful café and gift shop, selling everything homemade and wonderful. Also nearby is picture perfect Hawkshead and Coniston Water, the Lake District's third largest lake. There you'll find more opportunities for boating activities, perhaps discovering Peel Island - featured in Arthur Ransome's Swallows & Amazons as 'Wild Cat Island'.
Elterwater is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A tranquil hamlet with its tiny ‘swan lake’, Elter Water, sitting at the gateway of the striking Langdale valley. The soft valley landscape is in sharp contrast to the steep jagged Langdale Pikes. Elterwater sits between Ambleside and Great Landgale, where at the top of the valley the infamous Wrynose Path is the only way out of the u-shaped valley, giving it a superb sense of seclusion. The larger towns of Grasmere and Ambleside are both less than 4 miles away providing a host of options for shopping and eating out.

Cottage set in a fab location - we visit Elterwater each year and have stayed at many properties. The cottage was large and the bedrooms were well appointed and comfortable. However, it does need some maintenance as there were broken tiles in the bathroom and kitchen. The heating was poor and despite being on a lot, didnât heat up the rooms sufficiently. There were no logs for the wood burner and we had to buy our own. There were no instructions whatsoever for any of the appliances or the heating controls. We were told by Lakelovers before we got there that the dishwasher was not working and would be replaced during our stay together with the washing machine. This didnât happen so pleased we ate out each night! That said we had an enjoyable time here but probably not at the top of our list to return, sorry!

I would advise the owners to invest in a fire guard for safety. On arrival we found 5 dog balls under the sofa ! You stipulate that the cottage should be left as found, this is particularly hard when most of the cleaning bottles (3) under the kitchen sink were empty. We requested a cot and high chair, the chair was in the kitchen, but we didnât find the cot until by chance we looked under the single bed to find it hidden away ! That said, we found it a comfortable cottage in a lovely location, there just need to be more attention the detail.

It was clean and well maintained. We loved the location, just down the road from nice pub and cafe, and very rural with gorgeous walks. Our dog had a good time too. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would be happy to come back again.
