What our customers say about their holidays

Great for spider lovers. 0 stars. We booked the Old Windmill for our daughter's birthday. She picked it as it showed pictures of a cute top bedroom with lots of character. We arrived on Friday evening and started to notice a lot of cobwebs and some dead insects. When we went to the top bedroom, there were a few spiders and thick dirty cobwebs around the roof dome. I hoovered the ceiling the best I could, but she decided she couldn't sleep in there. In the morning I took a lot of photos and sent them to the owner. This included a dirty oven, fridge, lots of spiders, webs and towels that smelt musty/damp. 30 photos in all. The owner arranged for a cleaner to come while we were out, to clean and replace some towels. We came back in the evening and we could see that the cleaner had done something, but it really needs a deep spring clean. It feels like it's been shut up for a while and the spiders have been allowed to move in and spread out. The webs are quite dusty, so have been there for a while. Many webs and spiders were still there, so we decided we wanted to move and leave early. The replacement towels didn't really seem much better either. I messaged the owner Saturday evening to say we were wanting to leave early, asking for some level of a refund. Having not heard from the owner, we packed up and left the property on Sunday morning. I tried calling the owner at 10.00am, but couldn't get ahold of them. The owner messaged me to ask me to sort things out directly with Original Cottages, which was a bit annoying. So I called and it was agreed in principle that we wouldn't be charged for the Sunday night, but no agreement was made for any good will for our disappointing experience. I was called back to say that the owner had agreed to not charge for the Sunday night, but nothing in terms of good will. So I set about booking a last minute hotel. So, spending a good portion of my few days away, taking photos, messaging and calling people and arranging replacement accomodation - whilst staying in a place full of webs and spiders isn't good value. When making a formal complaint to Original Cottages, they said they couldn't do anything as they are only the agent and do not manage the property. So not a great experience using Original Cottages for the first time. Recommend to avoid both to be honest.

Wonderful springtime stay at the Arches last week This cottage and its surroundings are absolutely wonderful.

As others have said, the photos don’t do it enough justice. Its rustic, spacious but cosy at the same time. There was nothing quite like sitting outside, enjoying the beautiful view as the sun rolled across the dale, sipping a Whitby Gin and listening to the newborn lambs and their mums getting settled for the night. The reviews for this cottage don’t lie – the Arches really is superb. I was also delighted to note that the owners do listen and action feedback. On arrival, there was milk, biscuits and a very special treat in the fridge thank you! The owners were just such lovely, kind, caring people and clearly love their animals and farm. The Arches and the Old Cart House are a converted barn, so you can expect the odd critter (we have stayed in October when the big mummy spiders like to visit - you have been warned), but I must emphasise how clean the cottage was – we didn’t find any old webs, ash or dust! The heating booster setting warms up the cottage very quickly, and there’s plenty of wood provided for the log fire. Lovely comfy big beds in the upstairs rooms; the bedding and giant bath towels were spotlessly white and soft. Extra bedding was provided in the cupboard. The shower is over the bath (be careful climbing in) – but its very powerful and hot, just what you need after a long day’s walk. We took our 12 year old poodle with us and he was happy trotting around outside on the graveled front - the cottage does ask that dogs are well behaved as it’s a working farm so bear this in mind when the sheep are lambing and the gate must always be shut. Expect to drive to the nearest shops/supermarket, the Moorside Store is worth a visit for the homemade pies that you just stick in the oven back at the cottage. We ordered steaks from Farndale Farm (the leaflet is in the draw by the TV stand) and the owners kindly delivered them to us at the Arches – puts all supermarket quality to shame! Lots to do in North Yorkshire particularly if you are an English Heritage member but, at the same time, if you just want to relax in peace in front of the cottage fire, the Arches is perfect. We will be back later in the year without a doubt.

We spent a great holiday over Christmas at the Old Cart House with extended family.

It was lovely to arrive to a decorated Christmas tree and a bottle of wine waiting! The cottage was a great for the 7-10 of us and 2 dogs - everything is comfortable but also dog/kid friendly (e.g. easy clean carpets). The communal living / dining / kitchen area was great to allow everyone to be together while cooking etc. The open fire was amazing! The location is wonderful, very remote and beautiful, on a road that doesn't go very much further up the valley, so very little traffic. Nevertheless Morrisons found us with our big Christmas food order and its not too far to driver further afield. Luckily it wasn't icy though as that could have been tricky. We had a great day out in Whitby. The pub in the village, the Feversham Arms, is highly recommended, for the food and the really friendly atmosphere, and we really enjoyed their Christmas eve quiz! Only minor complaints would be that the fridge was a bit small (though as it was winter we could chill drinks etc outside), there was no cafetiere or corkscrew (luckily we came prepared with our own) and a little more cutlery would be useful.

The cleanliness of the cottage was pretty awesome given the time of year and that the farm was a bustling hive of activity from early morning to late evening.

However there were a lot of cobwebs which again it is a working farm and the cottage has an abundance of nooks and crannies which gather dust webs! The layout of the building was absolutely perfect for our family and we were all absolutely blown away by the open plan lounge/kitchen/diner. There was plenty of room for the seven humans and one pooch. The views are spectacular and the silence is divine! We will most definitely be coming back as it is a perfect location to explore the area. Pub down the lane does food but three out of the six meals we ordered were a little disappointing and the menu was a little expensive. We used the coal BBQ twice and spent the afternoons on the veranda with a few beverages watching the farmer working hard in the fields. The children were amused by the ducks, geese and even the peacocks played the game and shook their tails. Thank you so much for an amazing stay.

The property was not really suitable for very small children.

There were two stone steps up to the kitchen/sitting room. One twin bedroom was situated above the kitchen/sitting area with its own separate steep staircase. The layout of the bedrooms I don't believe was accurately described by yourselves. The situation of the cottage was stunning but we were unable to access any public footpaths within walking distance of the cottage even though there seems to be one clearly marked on the ordnance survey map. This maybe this is something you may like to take up with the owners as it would be a bonus to be able to walk a dog without having to take it in a car. I appreciate that this is a working farm with livestock but your description regarding walking from the cottage as 'close by' was rather vague. This is an area of Yorkshire unknown to us and we shall certainly return but not to this cottage.
