What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ritchie - Verified booking

      Ground Settings and views stunning.

The whole place over all was very charming and a good base for us to explore the surrounding areas and relax in between.. lovely views to wake up to . Whole experience only Let down by a few things. 1. The room was generally cold. Heating pre programmed with control from us, and not coming on nearly enough for what was a cold Easter weekend. Only one radiator in the room and it was also set to a low heat. We had to open the bathroom door to try and heat the main space as it was the only warm room in the house. We called through to reception a few times to ask but no answer. Also sometimes no hot water so had to have Luke warm shower. 2. Towels were old with one having a tear in it. 3. Some simple essential things like salt and pepper, tea bags etc go a long way when renting a place and not have to go out and buy all these things when travelling. It makes a massive difference and this could easily be provided 4. The noise coming from the other flats was at times very intrusive. Walls etc are paper thin and you can hear everything. We had a family with young kids next to us that seemed unaware of how thin the walls are. Maybe customers can be made aware of this and asked to keep noise down? 4. There wasn't adequate cleaning materials. Just one dish sponge and an almost empty bottle of fairy liquid that I had to add water to. Again a simple and cheap thing to provide so we don't have to go out and buy all this for just a few nights stay. 5. Cooker was awful. Took forever to heat up. 6.TV must be 20yrs old and needs updating. 7.internet was shocking. I know place is rural so maybe can't be helped. I needed to do some work and at times was unusable. Seemed to always go down at night? Maybe something to pre warn customers before booking as if essential work was needed done then this would have been a problem. 8. Bed was very comfortable but pillows not great. Again, a lovely place. Friendly and helpful staff. Glad we stayed, but will look elsewhere next time given the above issues.

Merlestead is a lovely property- more like a home than a holiday rental.

It is one of the rare places we have stayed where running out of plates and cutlery is just not possible as the kitchen is really well stocked. We were delighted with a lovely welcome pack from the owners - very thoughtful. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated and the beds are really comfortable. The en-suite bathrooms are gorgeous and perfect for a group of adults staying in the house. Merlestead has a lovely garden, and on the right days you can sit on one of the two patios and enjoy the sunshine and the views across to Derwentwater. Sadly the weather was not kind to us so we weren’t able to make as much use of theses facilities as we would have liked. The house is right on a public path which doesn’t disturb you, but which is really handy if you want to climb the hill behind. It is a five minute drive away from Keswick and I’m sure there is a nice walk too, but we didn’t use it as one of our party does not walk too much. It is conveniently located to see all of the Northern Lakes - close to Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, 30 minutes from Buttermere, Crummock Water and Ullswater. We saw one or two comments in previous reviews about the steep access to the house. All we can say is that it is up a hill, which gives you fantastic views, but access is simple in a car and not at all difficult. There are a few steepish steps up to the front door from the drive, so don’t pack really heavy bags that you can’t lift! Don’t be put off by negative comments. The house is lovely and well worth a visit.

The flat was much better than we expected.

Well equipped with two sets of dishes lots of equipment and glasses.Only kitchen item I would liked to have seen is a decent chef’s knife. The prep knives were substandard for attempting to prepare meals. Note I am a retired chef so am used to slicing and dicing being a bit easier. The flat itself was bright and easily cooled down with tilting windows and skylights. We all said now if I were to move into a flat from our house this would be perfect. The location is ideal for accessing the town and the hills and lake. We were traveling using trains and the bus and as long as you can are able to walk this is a great location. It would not work for anyone with mobility issues as it is top floor of a very steep stair. We did have a problem initially finding the flat and how to access it. However thanks to several people in shops and offices and a call to the letting agency that was all remedied after a very short period of panic. The locals are great. The issue was that I had not received the critical email with those details and Booking .com unlike most of their listings seemed to be missing concise location details

The accommodation wasn't quite as listed and this made a big difference to our stay.

The 'private' terrace wasn't private as there was an adjoining suite which used the same area. This also meant that when you opened the main curtains they could walk past which meant the room wasn't private either. There was also a locked door that led from our room into the hotel, which wasn't used and made us feel a bit uncomfortable. Unfortunately we thought the suite was separate from the hotel but it wasn't and the walls were very thin which meant we heard a lot of noise from above and to the side of us. The cleanliness was also not up to standard, especially as they currently have more time to clean due to covid. There were stains on the towels, dead bug marks on the wall, stains on the carpet and hairs in the bath. The bathroom was also not finished, the ceiling wasn't painted and there was a tile missing on the wall. This room has an incredible view which is brilliant but the overall quality of the room did not meet our expectations or the price we paid.

Had a very comfortable stay at Merlestead as a group of 4 adults and 2 dogs.

The house is spacious and thoughtfully fitted out, showers were good, heating flexible, kitchen facilities comprehensive, beds comfortable & what views! Absence of internal steps made it ideal for my less able dad. Great to have the garden and footpath straight out the back where there's an easy short loop for waking the dogs every morning. The boot room / laundry was perfect for arriving back after walks and an arduous fell run/scramble up to Skiddaw. We were surprised to not see more wildlife (sadly no squirrels despite the feeder) or birds (feeder at the front?) but there were deer up on the hillside on our daily walks. Location was a good balance of semi - remoteness but in reach of Keswick for provisions. We'd very much like to come back again. It seems a small thing but although a welcome pack is lovely, we'd have preferred provision of more useful items such as cooking oil / coffee pods / sugar as opposed to plastic bottles of water.
