What our customers say about their holidays

    • Howard - Verified booking

Overall, we found the cottage very adequate.

However the following was noted or would be appreciated: - the beds were a little tired - a handle on the wall to assist climbing in and out of the bath to get a shower would be safer - a smart TV would be appreciated - few bin liners would have been handy instead of just the one in the bin - a suggestion to exchange the tiny fridge freezer to a normal height fridge with no freezer - a suggestion to exchange the newish smallest fridge for a same sized freezer On 3 days/nights entering the kitchen, we saw some very large slugs, one in a cupboard and one getting into a drawer and others on the floor, these didnt get in via an open door etc as it was closed, we believe they got in via the rear of one or more of the kitchen units, we temporarily solved this by sprinkling some salt on them to kill them and onto various spots in the kitchen, we didnt see any again as of the salt but it didnt leave a nice feeling because of food being around, items in drawers and cupboards and kitchen surfaces, we felt we had to wash everything before using etc as slugs carry, if infected, rat lungworms that can be passed onto humans so with this in mind, the slug problem should be looked into by the owner even if it means pulling out the units as we believe there will be holes or badly sealed pipework/wiring etc where they are getting in especially with it being an old cottage, though this can be solved despite the age of the property. We do not believe they were getting in via the door open or closed. On the plus side, it is a lovely cottage and relaxing, we didnt find the traffic a nuisance at all, due to the thick walls. The garden was a lovely private sunny treat. There were lots of plug sockets throughout the property and it was nice and warm in the cooler nights. The parking was also adequate.

Although the cottage was generally well presented, there were a few issues we came across during our stay.

The rug in the dining room needs cleaning or replacing as there are quite a few marks on it. There is also a large stain on the landing carpet and spots in the main bedroom. The front garden needs a complete overhaul as it is currently so overgrown, the front door is inaccessible. You can only get wifi in the dining room where the router is, the signal is lost as soon as you leave that room. I agree with a previous reviewer, the fridge/freezer is totally inadequate for two people let alone four and should be replaced with a full size larder fridge and the fridge above the oven replaced with a small freezer. We did mention a couple of other things (microwave, baking trays, kettle) to the owner as we discovered a wasps nest being established next to the bathroom window. This was sorted the next day though and assurance the other things would be ordered. Although it seems picky, little things like a set of plastic/melamine chopping boards in addition to the wooden ones, a casserole dish with lid, slotted spoon and a spaghetti server would be very useful. We tried to use the gas fire but it wouldn't stay lit (I believe other guests had the same problem). Luckily the temperature went up and we didn't need to use it. However, none of these things ruined our holiday, we thoroughly enjoyed the location and the off street parking behind the cottage was a great bonus, along with the sun trap of a patio. These shouldn't be taken as criticism but helpful observations as maybe the owners don't have time to examine everything when it is being rented out fully.

The cottage is quaint and the set up was good ideally located for walks and visits to local pubs.

The cleanliness was not that good when taking a closer look cobwebs in many places dust on top of picture frames and internal areas of kitchen cupboards unclean.only 1 light bulb working in bedroom no replacement bulbs this was mentioned in the visitors book in November and still not dealt with no toilet brush in the bathroom and no torch under sink which would of been ideal when letting the dogs on the back yard in the dark at night and early morning. We took my mother in law who is 81yrs old so even though she is active she couldn't do the walks with us so she chilled in the cottage to watch TV.unfortunately when we got back she said she couldn't find any channels I had a look myself and no channels follow in sequence ie bcc1 bbc2 itv1 channel 4 they were miles apart and you could change channels several times and the same programme would appear needs completely re tuning in.some information leaflets were over a year old and the cleaner is a local lady and the back garden grass is cut fornightly by a company it got me thinking when was the last time the owners actually visited the cottage and checked it over thoroughly. Most disappointing thing was We stayed over the Christmas period and paid basically double the cost of the weekly cottage rate out of season and it was not decorated not a bauble in sight!!!! Felt very deflated on arrival so we went out and bought a small Christmas tree with lights. Very poor standards. Welcome pack was 1 nice touch.

It was a stunning location , peaceful and quiet.

The only downside was we felt that the kitchen could be better equipped with additional equipment which would have been useful during our stay. A pair of oven gloves instead of one small pad, a larger frying pan as the small one was a bit limiting when cooking for 4 adults. We could not find a hand towel to use in the kitchen as there was only one tea towel which we used for washing up. Perhaps some kitchen roll or a small roll of silver foil which could be left in between guests. Also it would help if there was a few basic essential left such as salt, and pepper and a small bottle of oil to help when cooking. Another small detail perhaps a hook in the bathroom to hang up a clothes ( Although I know you had a chair) but this was used for towels. The upstairs bedroom mezzanine was quirky and interesting , however it may be more to make that a twin room with beds positioned under the eaves either side of the room may be suitable may be more suitable for children who may no need the head room and leave the downstairs bedroom as a double. We make these comments with good intentions as we too are in the hospitality trade and understand the issues of meeting everyones needs. We must congratulate you on making a beautiful building / accommodation whilst respecting its history and heritage. As we have friends living in Scarborough nearby we may well return next year.Thank you both for making our stay relaxing ( despite the snow and storm Bert)

We loved our stay at Puffin Cottage.

It was clean, comfortable and had most of the items you needed for your stay including. It was tastefully decorated and had some nice touches. The wifi was seemed to work in most of the cottage. The enclosed garden was great and safe for our dog. The steps down to the back door are a little uneven and slippery when wet. You definately need a torch if you forget to leave the outside light on if you pop out in the evening. The parking at the rear of the property was a real bonus and although we didn't use it in November, the summer house and other small garden would be great in the summer. The stairs in the cottage are steep, but with care they are fine. We only used the front bedroom and the bed was really comfy! The bathroom is downstairs and its good size with a great shower over the big bath. The lounge is comfortable with two, 2 seater sofas and a log burner. I couldn't keep the log burner alight but was probably due to my lack of knowledge of log burners! The TV in the lounge is quite small and I found the Sky TV guide rather confusing and annoying. Puffin Cottage is ideally situated for visits to Scarborough, Robin Hood Bay and Whitby. York is just over an hour away. There are lots of interesting walks and views just a short walk from the front door including two pubs. We would recommend Puffin Cottage at any time of year but we especailly enjoyed our November stay. Thank you.
