What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jenny - Verified booking

Property is dirty, garden is not fully enclosed and owner refused to accept feedback when contacted through Sykes privately.

Shortly after arrival, we noticed that the downstairs toilet seat was dirty, when lifting it the underside of the seat was covered in brown and yellow spots! We then found a cheese like substance on a kitchen cupboard, crumbs and grease on work surfaces, the fridge hadn’t been wiped, dirty oven, dirty dishwasher, crumbs on the floor, and everything was sticky to touch! We then decide that we’d check the rest of the house. The wooden shelves by the side of the fire were filthy; the TV had been wiped but badly smeared. The bathroom was disgusting, the bath had some water still in it, there was a tidemark around it and the soap dish in the shower was filthy. Someone had left a small part of a bar of soap on a dirty soap dish and behind the sink was black mould. Again, the toilet was unclean too. We cleaned the property thoroughly, which we shouldn’t have had to do, but we just wanted to be able to enjoy our holiday. It should have been clean before our arrival. We mopped the floors and the water was filthy. Our second problem was regarding the garden, which was described as enclosed. We assumed this meant safe for dogs. It just meant there was a fence. This fence did not go down to the ground, there were gaps of approx 10” below the fence, with one larger gap leading to a very large drop down, this is definitely a safety issue for both dogs and children. Our dog disappeared on the first morning. He had gone through a gap into the garden next door, which we know now, but was missing for a while and was very worrying at the time as we were unsure where he had gone. We feel that this property has been neglected all round concerning cleanliness and safety. The list could go on further, no one else should have to spend their money on a very dirty cottage.

Beautiful, modern, and well decorated cottage in a fabulous location.

It has a lovely comfy bed with quality bedding, everything you require to stay in and cook, the welcome pack (milk, bread, choc-o-pains, butter, jam, coffee and tea) was appreciated, and even treats for our dog and towels to dry her when she came back wet from romping in the fields. Luxury toiletries in the bathroom, lots of fluffy towels and a bonus of an outdoor courtyard area to sit out and enjoy the rays. Even books, games and maps were provided and Netflix for those rainy times. The cottage is on a busy road, which can be noisy especially during the day, but the most of the time we were out exploring and there is no parking, but we managed to park for free on a quiet and safe street just up the road. Ashbourne is a gorgeous town, with lots of fabulous countryside right on the doorstep. We enjoyed lots of walks with our dog, visited Bakewell, Tissington, Ilam and scoffed and troffed in many of the local eateries and cafes. There was even a brass band playing in the local park. The locals were all friendly and had time to chat. Would we visit again - most definitely, would we stay at this little home away from home - YES! But ssshhhhhh, don't tell everyone as we want to return.

      Outstanding.

We were a family of 8 adults and 4 children together for a special occasion. It was like staying in a National Trust property. Never stopped anywhere like it before. Bedrooms and all rooms were huge and very tastefully decorated. Beds were super comfy and lots of places to sit and relax. Spotlessly clean and very well maintained with one exception - the induction hob wasn't working. We were informed about this beforehand and temporary arrangements made for us so we changed our meal plan. Obviously this could be a big issue - but for us it was not. The only other negative was the top floor bedroom. Great for the kids but we happened to be there on the rare occasion of a lovely summer weekend and the room was extremely warm. A cooling air-con unit in this room is a must! The garden/drive is well laid out, very peaceful, well maintained and with ample tables and chairs - all of which were well used. The property is across the road from the Crown Inn - a lovely pub serving excellent food - very busy so you need to book and both are situated in a lovely little village. I've never written this before but yes I would go back.

My parents rented Cloud View Cottage in the village of Thorpe for two weeks over Christmas 2022 and the New Year.

Family members stayed there at different times with my parents during this period and I can honestly say we thoroughly enjoyed our break there. The cottage was spacious and clean and we all especially liked spending time in the small conservatory that backed onto the rear gardens. The surrounding countryside was beautiful, as was the little church nearby, and we had some lovely walks around the local area and beyond. Cloud View Cottage is dog friendly which made it even more accessible for people to visit. The owners who lived close by were friendly, helpful and amenable to any requests we had. We did feel the cottage would benefit from some general updating to increase it's appeal. For example, some of the mattresses were uncomfortable to sleep on due to the springs being felt on top. One of the bedrooms had folding guest type beds which weren't substantial enough for a good rest, and the cooker was very old. Despite these few points, we all enjoyed a lovely family break in picturesque Cloud View Cottage.

Booked this house as a family get together as we all live in different parts of Uk.

Worked out perfectly. Lots of space with 2 living rooms. Kitchen and bathrooms are all of a high standard and kitchen was impressively stocked with plenty of crockery, cooking equipment and space to cook and entertain. Outside space was fab. Spent a whole day playing garden games and sitting in the sunshine catching up. Lovely walks from here to. Great communication with host. Brilliant pub directly opposite serving best Sunday roast ever ! Only things for improvement is tv lounge would really benefit from a new sofa / no mirrors in some of the bedrooms and mattress in one bedroom Could do with being replaced. We all live in modern houses so It was lovely to spend a week In such an old house with its quirks and uneven floors. Would definitely return and glad to see the owner investing in the property but keeping it true to its heritage.
