What our customers say about their holidays

    • Krystina - Verified booking

      We loved our stay.

Perfect for a big family break. All rooms lovely with amazing views. House very clean. House well equipped with everything we needed. (Could do with a 2nd toaster as the one there takes forever and with so many people for breakfast it took a while) but everything else so well equipped for large numbers. 2 dishwashers really handy. All rooms nicely spaced apart so didn’t feel on top of each other during stay. Massive dining table to seat everyone. Loved that there were a couple of different lounges/cosy areas so guests can spread out and not be all stuck in one space. Outdoor area beautiful- most amazing views. Sooo nice to have that view to wake up to. Little lambs right there and bunnies hopping around. Outdoors would benefit from a comfier sofa/rattan type set or loungers for sunny days/more seating if everyone wanted to sit outside at table. Also an outdoor light nearer the house/table would be great for sitting out. 2 Hot tubs and sauna fab. Beautiful setting. Owners were helpful and easy to contact with couple of queries we had re cleaning and someone came out to check/clean one of them out that seemed to not be quite right. We had a couple of children with us who absolutely loved their stay and all the space in the garden (small children need close supervision as house very close to the road - no issue but garden gates are like metal farm gates so small children could easily get through them onto road) Ashbourne only a 10 min drive away for cafes shops etc and lots of nice walks on your doorstep. We absolutely loved our stay so much and wouldn’t hesitate to return/recommend to those looking for a special break.

This is a fantastic house in a wonderful position.

We did, however, have major issues with the electrics on the site. When we arrived the house was warm, but after that the heating went off and we had to resort to sweaters etc. The instructions sent out by the owners stated that “the heating is controlled via an outside app …. Do let us know if you would prefer it warmer or cooler.” We messaged Laura Holden at 18.01 on Saturday to ask for some heat, and she replied at 21.24 telling us that the reference to an outside app was copied from another property. Laura then told us where the thermostats were in the house; one of them would not work because the knob was worn. Guests staying in the cottage and on the third floor of the main house were cold. A further disappointment was the hot tubs. We decided to use them on Saturday evening, but found that there was no power in the areas of the sauna and hot tubs. On investigation we found an outside consumer unit with an RCD that had operated. The cause appeared to be a fault on the hot tub nearer the sauna, so we had to leave that disconnected in order to restore the outside power. We.messaged Laura and she promised to contact a local electrician; she did this and he came on Sunday around 1 pm when we were out walking. These issues with the heating and the hot tubs were most unsatisfactory: we were only there for the weekend and we manifestly did not get full value. OTHER ISSUES: kitchen well equipped but needs some small sharp knives, one or more decent sized cafetières, water jugs, and plugs for the sink. The “Welcome Guide” needs careful revision: what it says about the heating and the Wi-Fi is inaccurate.

What a charming little holiday cottage, equipped with everything we needed for a self sufficient stay.

Owner Ken lives onsite but the barn is completely private and enclosed within its own garden, with a new summerhouse which was really warm even on a cold day. Ken is about the friendliest man we've met and is always able to give advice on walks, local sights etc. The welcoming pub is within a few hundred yards stumbling distance and the landlord even remembered our drinks order when we emerged from a long day of walking, two days after our first visit! The cottage is perfectly situated close to Dovedale which can be walked to directly from the front door. There is a generous stack of fuel for the logburner which is no extra charge. Cottage appears small in the photos but this is part of its charm, you need to be willing to compromise on space but it is perfect for a couple and the comfy chairs were huge and cosy. We were able to use the dining table as our cooking space and even baked fresh bread daily, had a roast dinner etc so had no problems. Photo on the description was slightly out of date as the TV is now a larger flatscreen with freeview/netflix etc. All in all a lovely relaxing week and a great base for local national trust, walks (and brewery tours), thanks for the stay Ken!

Lovely property and excellent space for two families (we were 4 adults and 5 kids ranging from 3 to 11). Very nicely furnished throughout and pleasant garden space out front - great for the kids to play. Really well equipped kitchen and lovely bathrooms. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into making the place as comfortable as possible. Loads to do in the local area and Wirksworth is a pretty little town only 5 minutes drive away that has a lovely French bistro and a small supermarket. The cottage is in a lovely spot which is very peaceful with a great short walk up to Harborough Rocks directly behind the cottage which has a panoramic view for miles across the surrounding countryside - a great spot for sundowners of an evening. Worth mentioning that there is a small factory just over the hill nearby that creates some light and low level noise at night but it didn’t bother us at all (and couldn’t be heard indoors). The beds were so comfortable we all slept brilliantly - kids included! All in, really lovely accommodation and highly recommend.
