What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mr John Forster - Verified booking

The location just a short distance from Ambleside was perfect with a safe walk into the town which had plenty of amenities. We all had a wonderful time as the lakes are stunning and the weather was very kind and dry. The equipment at the property was plentiful, no real need for an iron, ironing board, who irons when on holiday and a dishwasher as there’s only the two of us. The log fire is also OTT as you have underfloor heating. There’s no permanent place to put clothes or towels in the bathroom so everything has be hung on either the shower stall or the clothes airer which takes up half the bathroom. The sink outlet pipe is obviously blocked as the note above the sink testifies to other stayers having similar issues. A number of the wall unit doors were sticking especially the end cupboard door and the dishwasher unit was badly fitted so the door was 2” out at the top. 3 of the plates were chipped. We were asked to remove the bedding which revealed large stains on the Mattress, mattress cover and duvet cover. The storage cupboard had a freezer an iron, an ironing board which reduced its capacity and wasn’t needed. Overall the-feel of the property was a little cramped and that it needed a good clean especially to the outside of the property which let it down. We’ve become accustomed to having a few treats on arrival with all the properties i.e. milk tea coffee or a bottle of wine etc so was disappointed with not even a welcome card. The property was very comfortable the bed the sofa etc, apart from the 2 pillows which were rock hard, but as I said difficult to move around the bed with the TV on the wall next to the bed end, next to the fire base, the stools as well as 2 large dogs and their beds. Value of the property was ok but never sure what the accidental damage charge and the £20 per dog goes to as the property had all wooden floors. We booked a midweek break but the 4pm arrival and the 9am departure time for the soul purpose of cleaning left me with the feeling it was more like 3 days and the regular reminders of the arrival and departure times x6 were tedious and excessive. We would have no issue with booking with your company apart from the additional charges, admin dogs etc if we found a property but not The Hideaway. I Never recommended companies or products. Just to say we did have a pleasant stay but due to issues raised above it felt short of our usual experience and expectations

We Stopped in this cottage last Xmas and really enjoyed the location, cleanliness and facilities, hence the reason we decided to return this Xmas.

Upon arrival we were disappointed by the facilities and cleanliness of the cottage, this is echoed in the previous occupants review. The property seems a bit neglected and needs a bit of TLC to bring it back to the minimum standards you expect. As per the previous review recommendations are listed below (including those already raised): 1.) A thorough clean throughout - cobwebs on light fittings / ceilings etc., crumbs in the fridge and cupboards, sofas & dust behind objects on tables and cupboards etc. 2) Clean the oven - it needs it! 3) Provide starter logs (or don't say you will), fortunately we brought our own supply however first before we could use it we had the clean the glass of the burner as this was all blacked up from previous use 4) Towels Stained with bleach and no hand wash provided on middle floor toilet facilities 5) Toilet Flush Button of top floor broken and working intermittently 6) A nice touch would be to provide a welcome pack upon arrival to get you started especially as we were paying top dollar for the Xmas period. When we have stopped elsewhere in Ambleside with other companies we have always received a welcome pack. We love the Lake District but sadly will not be returning to this cottage as it does not compare with other cottages in the village we have used, which is a shame as we really enjoyed our previous visit to the cottage

The cottage was lovely, well appointed, had good quality equipment, and was very easily accessible. The parking provided was good, but not clearly stated in the information sent out before our arrival, but I did find the information in the file in the cottage. We had a struggle with the underfloor heating in the bathroom which kept on going off, and the instructions were not the easiest to follow to set the heating. There was no remote for the tv, and when I phoned your office I was told someone would look into it and provide us with a remote, but it never materialised and I never received a follow-up call from your office - I know it was the festive season, but that is poor customer support. We struggled to find the cutting board in the kitchen, finally locating it stored under the microwave, not a very visible place to store it. The glass pot of the cafitier (French Press) has a crack in it near the spout & one of the side plates had a chip in it. Neither of these issues prevented us from using the items, but they should be replaced. The one negative about the property is that there is only 1 small hanging place for clothes and no chest of drawers, or even shelves for your clothes to be stored, they had to remain in our suitcases.

The cottage isn’t exactly a cottage - it’s one room & a shower room. It’s very clean but much smaller than the photos make it look. The bed was extremely comfortable but the couch was not so we had to spend most of the evening sitting on the bed. The kitchen is well equipped but the hob required us to consult YouTube to make it function! If you are taking a car then parking is a problem, the space allocated is suitable for a fiat 500 & nothing larger. When you park you have to also leave room somehow for the other flats in the next block of properties to access a garden. When I went out in the morning the cottage across from us had parked right in the middle of the narrow courtyard so we couldn’t get out… I was running an ultra marathon that morning & ended up having to walk into Ambleside (not far but not ideal when you’re conserving energy to spend a whole day running). On the whole it served our purpose but I don’t think we’ll be back.

We had a wonderful stay at Loughrigg View!

It really felt like home to home. The cottage is a beautiful three story property, spacious, cosy and clean. It has all the amenities e.g. Washing machine, dryer etc which made our break easier to enjoy. The bathroom and en-suite are comfortable with powerful showers. The living room has a log burner too, which would be very useful in the winter. The kitchen/diner is quite tight for five adults but we managed by breaking up our dinner times. The cottage is in central Ambleside, so we could access shops and visit other areas easily. There is a local Tesco and Co-op for goods and groceries too. For those who booked after March, it's worth noting a paring permit is no longer provided. There are a couple of things that aren't available too: bathroom bins, spare kitchen towels and toilet rolls. These would be helpful to have! Overall, we enjoyed our time here and would book again.

    Frequent questions

    • Is Ambleside worth a visit?

Yes, Ambleside is definitely worth a visit for its scenic beauty and charming atmosphere. Located in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, Ambleside offers stunning views of lakes and mountains, picturesque walks, cosy pubs, a range of outdoor activities and, of course, beautiful holiday homes and Ambleside cottages. The Lake District in general is a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in a beautiful setting, but the charming town of Ambleside alone is worth a visit.

    • How long is the coffin walk in Ambleside?

The Coffin Walk in Ambleside is a circular route that is approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) long, ideal for keen hikers on a walking holiday. The walk takes you through picturesque landscapes, including forests, fields, and beautiful views of Lake Windermere. It's a moderate-level hike that provides a glimpse into the area's history and offers a peaceful and scenic experience. Once finished, you can make the most of your Ambleside holiday cottage by resting your feet, cooling off in the swimming pool or relaxing in the hot tub. Our Ambleside cottages are ideal for walkers, as well as anyone looking for a suitable property in which to stay while the more active people in your group explore!

    • Is Ambleside or Windermere better for self catering accommodation?

Both the lakeland town of Ambleside and Windermere have their own unique charms, so determining which is better for self catering accommodation depends on personal preferences. Ambleside cottages are often in demand due to there being fewer on offer and with limited availability this could make it harder for you to find one on your dates. The centre of Ambleside offers a more relaxed and quaint atmosphere, with its charming village, scenic walks, and proximity to beautiful lakes like Lake Windermere itself. Windermere, on the other hand, is larger and more bustling, with a wider range of amenities, available properties and attractions close by. Another big draw of a lakeland cottage in Windermere is the water-based activities available on Lake Windermere, and convenient transportation links to Bowness on Windermere, Troutbeck Bridge and the rest of the Lake District. Both are popular towns boasting all manner of accommodation, including holiday park resorts and more.

    • Is there a market in Ambleside?

Yes, the charming town of Ambleside hosts a weekly market known as the Ambleside Market. The market takes place on a Wednesday and offers a variety of stalls selling local produce, crafts, clothing, and other goods. It's a great opportunity to explore and discover local products while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the market. If you're hunting for independent shops Ambleside also has those in spades, so don't worry if you forget anything before arriving at one of our Ambleside cottages. You'll find all the amenities you'll need right here!

    • What should you look for in Ambleside cottages?

Ambleside cottages can be difficult to choose between, because there is such a large variety of Ambleside accommodation. If you're after tradition, look for a detached stone built cottage in a tranquil location, with easy access to the Lake District national park. The best Ambleside holiday cottages on our books include Rose Cottage, a fantastic cottage resting on the edge of the lake, a stylish mid terrace property with off road parking, a two bedroom holiday home with wi fi, dishwasher and baby friendly facilities, a short walk from the town of Ambleside.
