"Pine Lodge may well be suitable for dog owners, but if doggy smells aren't your thing then I wouldn't recommend booking the Lodge. The dog smell in the living area was very strong, and the sofa in particular smelt so strongly of dog that we were unable to use it as we found that the smell transferred to our clothes. Some of the windows have no blind or curtain. This includes the shower room window and the kitchen window. Our kitchen window looked out onto the shower room window of the next door Lodge and when the occupants used the room with light on it left very little to the imagination! I would recommend careful thought about how the shower room is used after dark.Apart from that - the Lodge is starting to look a bit tired, and the contents are very much in a "used" condition. For example, the chopping boards are ingrained with dirt, one of the mugs supplied was chipped, and the shower head is partially blocked with limescale. The fittings are also showing signs of a long life - the kitchen flooring is discoloured through use and there were at least two stains (dog wee?) on the carpets.Having said that, the Lodge had been cleaned well and the bedroom, bed, sheets, etc were all clean and fresh. We found the bed to be very comfortable. The site is just off a main road but is very quiet. If you like interaction with the owners - this Lodge would disappoint. The only interaction we had was via text message, although written instructions were provided about where to find the owners if needed. Unlike other cottages we have stayed in, there was no welcome hamper.Leaflets about the locality are in the coffee table drawer - but don't expect them to be up-to-date. Most of them are more than a year old.Well located for travelling into York and further afield."

"disappointing to say the least, the lodge has a guest book for your comments clearly this is just a PR exercise and achieves nothing for the next guests comfort as none of the comments were acted on.Once we had arrived it soon became clear that there was little privacy to the lodge at all, the shower room has no blind this means that the window directly above the toilet and at such a level that it leaves nothing to the imagination, my wife looked in horror as the lady in the next lodge was taking a shower once again nothing was left to the imagination as there were no blind to that shower window either, this just left you to think that none of the lodges has shower room blind to the window. The kitchen window above the sink once again there was no blind up to the window this looked across to the entrance door of the neighboring lodge, this is where the wife was at when she saw the lady taking a shower, this comment about privacy was mentioned in more than one entry in the guest comments book, clearly no one is bothered as nothing has been done, whilst still on the subject of the shower room it would have been a nice touch to have supplied a shower cap for the ladies.I suppose the question would be would I stay here again the answer straight away would be NO I would not stay again, however, if the comments were addressed then I would probably say that yes I would stay again.the request to share your best photo of you enjoying the lodge, unfortunately, we do not any due to the comments above we cant say that we enjoyed it.None of our comments has any reflection on the staff who we found to be very pleasant warm and friendly, she was the reason that we stayed had she had been any different we would have left.A very disappointed guest."

"We stayed here because we were in the middle of a house move and needed somewhere to stay for two weeks, it's a pretty little cottage in the middle of forest which is very attractive, but I think it needs some serious updating outside, the paint work is very bad, the garden furniture is very tired and scruffy, the grass has not been cut and the frontage is disappointing. The kitchen is nice and bright, the oven worked well, but the hob is very slow and could also benefit from an update, some of the kitchen pans etc were dirty with some food remains still on them. The bathroom is very dingy and dark, no window, so if needing bright light for shaving or putting in contact lens it was very bad.The bed was a rather small double, and the pillows had very little filling, so again I think they need to buy new ones, the bedding was ok, the bed was too small so my other half slept on a single bed in the next bedroom. The Wifi connection is almost zero.........I could only get a signal by the kitchen door, and also impossible to get a phone connection for any calls, it's a half mile drive to the main road before you can call out! There are no pubs, restaurants, or corner shops in walking distance, so take plenty of food. The laundry room across the driveway is awful, the machines are dirty, the room is like an old store with all sorts of rubbish, the dryer is very old and looked quite dangerous, I didn't really want to use either of them....If staying here then enjoy the surrounding countryside and the local towns, Pickering, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay , Dalby Forest, are fab but just use it to sleep in and not really have any luxuries"

"A lovely cottage, great location and superb views, although lacked outside seating areas which got much sun in the evening. Well enclosed space around the house and access to a large rough pasture field (if no livestock in residence) was excellent for dogs. The beds were very comfy and rooms were large and beautifully presented. Practical equipment was problematic - lacking enough mugs, glasses and plates requiring twice daily dishwasher use, cutlery was of poor quality, inadequate lighting to read by in sitting rooms and bedrooms, uncomfortable sofas in the small sitting room and repairs outstanding eg shower rail unstable, taps loose, leaking kettle and no information on how to regulate/ change heating settings; all disappointing for a house of this price and presentation. The promised estate staff visit on arrival did not happen, although email contact was made mid-stay. Generally clean but crockery and glassware had clearly not been checked, some carpets, chairs and walls were marked and scuffed. We loved the house and its setting, but more attention to practicalities needed - and the fire pit in the garden is clearly for show - overhung by trees and stacked with huge logs which would be impossible to light - the generous supply of logs for the wood burners was however much appreciated."

"Micklethorn was a beautiful property in Yorkshire that I would recommend. We were a party of 8 adults and 2 toddlers.A lovely house, with some nice interior design features and beautiful views across the rolling countryside. It was within an easy drive of several local walks and attractions. Just a couple of minor issues to mention: 1. The property is close to a busy 'A' road, and as such can be a little noisy at rush hour. 2. There were no locks on any of the bathroom or toilet doors. 3. Aside from an en suite in one of the rooms there was only one other shower. This meant 1 shower for 6 adults to share. I wonder wether there could be a second shower installed over the bath in the second bathroom? 4. Despite being a large house able to accommodate large groups, the kitchen was not best equipped, with not enough large saucepans. 5. Two of the main bedrooms have apex windows, which aren't completely covered by the blinds. This meant that light streams in from dawn, which for light sleepers could be an issue. These are all minor issues, and I would stay again, but I feel they are worth mentioning as some are readily fixed and the place is not cheap."
