    Thirsk Holiday Cottages

Thirsk is a traditional English market town in the centre of North Yorkshire's farmland. The town was made famous by James Herriot, the veterinarian and author whose stories were set here. Today, Thirsk is home to the World of James Herriot Museum. You'll find one of the oldest racecourses in England, and the market square is still bustling on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Whether you're looking for a romantic break or a family trip, holiday cottages in Thirsk have something to suit everyone. There are idyllic country cottages with log fires and large gardens, perfect for winter getaways, as well as airy apartments with balconies and views of the market square.

Book your Thirsk getaway with confidence at Snaptrip. With thousands of properties across the UK available to choose from, we've got cottages for every taste and budget. Simply use our handy search filters to find a property that matches your criteria - from private hot tubs to dog-friendly cottages, we've got it all. We wanted to get away for a week and came across these cottages, what a find.

If you enjoy the countryside and want to get away from the city this is an ideal place. We stayed at one of the farm cottages "The Granary" part of a complex of converted barns situated within a working farm. This accommodation with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen lounge was one of cleanest places we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in numerous places. It was immaculate and could not fault it at all. The kitchen was well equipped. Sachets of tea, coffee and sugar were provided together with a bottle of milk and some cleaning products. There were also toiletries in the bathrooms. The owners and staff were great hosts. We loved the Alpacas and seeing the new born lambs. Thirsk is only 4 miles away, a small market town. The farm in Sutton -under-Whitestonecilffe lays at the foot of Sutton Bank Yorkshire moors. There are plenty of walks and places to visit. We will definitely stay at the cottages again but there are also glamping pods which look fantastic. A big thank you to the hosts for making us so welcome. This place is a star find.

      Fantastic stay at the Granary.

My husband and I took both our Mum’s away for a break. We were all impressed with the quality, comfort and cleanliness of the property. It’s been decorated and maintained at a very high standard. Ed and James were really friendly and my MIL loved meeting the Alpacas with my husband. The property was lovely and warm and welcoming after days out and the location couldn’t be better if you wanted to see everything Yorkshire has to offer. We really recommend the World of James Herriot in Thirsk. Was totally wheelchair friendly and the staff were so knowledgeable. We also visited the Wensleydale Creamery in the Dales and took the Cheesemaking tour which was fab. Whitby is also easy to get to from the property through the North York moors and “Heartbeat” country where you’ll find Goathland aka “Aidensfield” Absolutely fabulous week!

If there are ever very cosy cottages, then Black Sheep Cottage is certainly one.

It is compact, exceptionally clean and very comfortable. The kitchen is very well appointed, the lounge is very comfortable, and the bedrooms are spaciously adequate and very comfortable. The ability to park outside is a bonus - no parking in the marketplace, which is a mere five minute walk away. Throughout, there is the "theme" of Swaledale sheep, very topical for the area. We were very surprised, and grateful for a "goodie" bag of gifts - thank you very much (not sure if this is customary - we were there over New Year). Thirsk is a bustling town with many shops, pubs and restaurants to choose from and not to mention the beautiful scenery at close hand. We had a very enjoyable New Year at Black Sheep Cottage

Satellite navigation does not take you to the cottage so you can spend time finding it, especially in the dark.

Better instructions on how to reach the cottage, which is off the beaten track OR signposting from the Main Street would help. Flexibility on leaving time (even if it’s just half an hour ) would be welcomed. Hosts did not reply to request left on answerphone - an indication would have helpful, either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Guests usually only ask for extra time if needed. Induction frying pans are not the best (poor contact resulting in poor cooking). Takes twice as long to cook a fried breakfast (which is purchasable on the farm). Otherwise a fantastic stay. Ed is an excellent host.

The parking area is very small suitable only for a Fiat 500 or similar.

We had to take the bench into the lounge for our stay in order to squeeze a medium sized Ford into the space. No hairdryer - we have stayed in some 50 cottages over the years and this is the first one without a hairdryer. It is not possible to use the toilet when standing due to lack of head room. The bath is lethal - no handles and also incredibly slippery - a rubber bath mat make this safer. The shower has no head room and no curtain - is impossible to use apart from washing one's hair. The property should be advertised as unsuitable for seniors due to the unusable facilities.
