What our customers say about their holidays

    • Toni - Verified booking

We absolutely loved every minute of our stay at Sycamore Cottage.

The property itself is immaculate, very clean and decorated to a good style with some quirky decorative pieces. There is one main route to the cottage on country lanes from the main road so it is easy to get to, although coming from the Ashbourne end the country lane is very narrow and was a little bit much for me so we always choose the other route past the farm shop, which only added about a minute to the journey and less stressful for me! The hot tub was great and the views were simply amazing, looking out over the Derbyshire Dales with some lovely sheep grazing in the field next door. Ellie, the owner, was brilliant. Very easy to communicate with and so helpful. We had one slight issue with the hot tub but she had it sorted for us straight away. The area is great for all ages. We stayed with our two children (5 and 7) and there was loads to do with them but we could have easily kept ourselves occupied with lots of small villages to explore and loads of walking routes. With the children we took them to Peak Wildlife Park and Splash Landings waterpark, both a little pricey but we spent the whole day there. We also spent the day in Ashbourne, and at Carsington Water, which was great. We went a little further afield and had a trip to the car museum (for the husband!) and another trip for the children at Conkers, which is an outside activity centre. We had hoped to get to Bakewell and Chatsworth House but just ran out of time! All in all, a brilliant week with a very comfortable cottage to come back to. We would happily return. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Overall the clockmakers is absolutely beautifully presented both inside and out.

It is obvious that care and attention has been poured into every aspect of the property and wonderful touches like the welcome gifts and the little tag notices and the information book were very much appreciated. It is a quirky old characterful building that has been decorated to maximise all these features. It is also very central but as it’s set back from the road it is very quiet. Don’t worry that there is no onsite parking. There is a car park just 3 mins walk away that is completely free and you can load/ unload in the bay immediately opposite the house. The town itself is also lovely with lots to do(definitely try the Tissington Cycle Trail) and some great tea rooms, bars/ pubs and restaurants all in walking distance. The only minor detail is that the property is very compact and with 4 people 5ft 10 and over it was quite a squeeze. The single bed room is suitable for a child or an adult under 5ft 8. Seating 5 around the kitchen table would be a challenge. Would definitely go back if 2 couples or a couple and one adult.

We had a lovely time at the Old Clock Makers.

The owners obviously love the property and there are many unique features that continue to surprise you as you notice them throughout your stay. We were really happy with the stay and the welcome gifts left by the hosts were a much appreciated touch. Despite a busy main road with many lorries, from where the cottage is located behind a building also on this road, it was surprisingly quiet. The only constructive feedback we can offer is that it would be nice to have a firepit or similar for the garden. It was a slightly cold week and with only being able to drink outside pubs due to current lockdown protocol, it would be nice to get he best of both at the cottage, with sitting outside but with some warmth. We apologise about leaving food in the fridge, miscommunication between the two of us that was not realised until we got home. We saw a note about a new cottage the owner will be opening later in the year, we will happily visit this setting also based on this experience, we really did have a wonderful time. Thank you.

What a beautiful property in such a scenic location!

The owners were very accommodating and were very responsive to questions we had prior to our stay. They also kept us updated about wifi issues in the area during our visit which we really appreciated. Thank you so much for the welcome pack. It was such a lovely touch and our daughters loved their treats too! The cottage was well equipped (especially in the kitchen) but we would have appreciated a brush and pan to clean the floor. Overall the property was cleaned to a good standard however, there were a few little bits on the floor (particularly in kitchen, upstairs bathroom and dining room) which wasn't ideal for a crawling baby. We loved spending time in the garden and in the hot tub surrounded by the beautiful countryside. It was lovely seeing the sheep through the kitchen window! We also enjoyed relaxing by the wood burning stove in the evenings and playing the board games. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

The Old Clock Makers is a lovely place to stay, spotlessly clean and well provisioned with everything you need to enjoy your holiday.

The garden is beautiful and a real sun trap when the weather is good. The only downside would be the steep and winding stairs - not really an issue for us (other than getting heavy suitcases to and from the top floor) but could be a problem for anyone with mobility issues. Obviously this was clearly set out in the listing so it didn't come as a surprise. Ashbourne itself is a fabulous place and a great centre of operations to explore the surrounding area - there are loads of great pubs and some really nice restaurants, as well as a range of lovely independent shops. Based on previous reviews we were slightly concerned about parking but it really isn't an issue - there was always space in the loading bay outside the property when we needed it and the park is just up the road with ample space and no restrictions at all. Highly recommend the town of Ashbourne and the accommodation.
