What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mr McDonald - Verified booking

A beautiful cottage in a beautiful picturesque village, served with an excellent pub- great food, beer & friendly service. Sadly they only serve food Thursday Friday Saturdays & Sunday lunch- but when they do - WOW! The cottage has a great modern kitchen diner, a cosy living room with modern log burner. Both double bedrooms are clean, spacious & served with an adequate shower room fed by a combi boiler. The garden is a nice sun soaked spot to sit in & is secure for any dogs, unless yours will jump a 3ft wall! This is a great base located just a few minutes walk to the pub & huge village green with a babbling stream to the side, the village easily accessed just a short drive from the A66. Richmond being a short 10 minute drive, Barnard castle around 20 minutes & Raby castle about the same. There are some nice walks for you to explore with or without a dog in the village & the nearby towns/villages. Definitely recommend this cottage & location.

Bit of a disappointment on arrival late afternoon after a very long journey to find the house cold - thermostat set to 16 - and no starter kit of logs/ kindling.

The log burner in the kitchen/diner appeared to be out of order with the cord door liner detached and lying loose. A warning note should have been left - rang the caretaker who confirmed it should not be used. He also said a bag of logs would be left for us the following morning for the fire in the sitting room - which they were. House took a while to warm up but after this misstep everything was great. The house is very well kitted out with super comfy beds and a really excellent sofa. All the kitchen equipment is good and the layout of the kitchen/diner makes for companionable cooking and chatting. The walks right from the doorstep are fabulous and we were lucky to be there when the newly reopened pub had just started providing food - the tea shop is also excellent. The house provided a fabulous base for exploring beautiful Swaledale and we were fortunate to experience the wonders of the Northern Lights while we were there.

A fabulous week in a beautifully decorated cottage in a beautiful area.

The cottage was very comfortable especially the beds, we all slept very well, especially after days spent walking quite a few miles rediscovering old Lead Mines and discovering others. A well equipped kitchen, a good sized fridge/freezer a bonus as we cooked every evening except one. The lovely hot water was also very welcome, although we were a bit cold in the evenings as the cottage takes time to warm up even with the heating settings turned up, however it was quite a cold week and we managed. If I could just make one suggestion it would be to put some blinds/curtains in the kitchen this would make for more cosiness and privacy. May we recommend The Red Lion, Langthwaite, Raby Castle, White Scar Caves, Reeth Swaledale Museum and Keld Heritage/Resource Centre and Farm Tea Room as excellent places to stop off and/or visit.

The light fitting was hanging off in the bathroom by its cable.

The fridge was not clean and had wet paper inside the icebox where someone had tried to clean it out Also it was turned off on arrival and we had a lot of cold food to put in there also there was no gate on the garden so you couldn’t let The dog into the garden and it said enclosed garden on the description the garden was messy and needed maintenance work also the bin lid in the kitchen was broken also there was holes in the walls in one of the bedrooms also kitchen utensils were in poor cleanliness condition also the sofa had food and wrappers down the side of the cushions also was a bit confused with there being a Child seat connected to the toilet when it says in the description adults only no children under 12

Appletree Cottage was very well equipped throughout.

As keen walkers it was great to have boot trays inside, a boot scraper/brush outside and a warm utility room to dry any wet clothing. The beds were very comfortable too. The owner is a lovely lady who left a great welcome pack. The cottage overlooks the village green with a small but very welcoming pub on the opposite side. There are lovely walks to be done from the cottage and easy distance to Barnard Castle, Richmond and many other places. One thing we were happy about was finding a property that was dog free which has become increasingly difficult of late. Take note Sykes Cottages not everyone wants to take pets or rent property which allows pets. It was our fist visit to the area and we do want to return.
