It's worth pointing out that the lock on this property is sticking, it took us half an hour to unlock the door from the inside multiple times.

It also kept sticking from the outside too so we couldn't get in either. Eventually it would unlock but you have to just keep trying it til it eventually works. The radiator in the bedroom leaks if you try alter it, we really wanted to turn it off as it was really warm in the bedroom but when we went to turn it down loads of water spewed out. The property is starting to look quite tired, we've been staying there for a few years now, we've been a total of 5 times and honestly the bedroom and bathroom needs a refresh now, there are cracks everywhere and the cleaners never clean behind the bed or the bedside tables, the dust in there is unreal. We like the location of the proper as it makes it easy to paddleboard but honestly we probably wouldn't stay there anymore if it wasn't for it being on the lake as we always have to deep clean it when we arrive. The floors are always really dirty and our socks end up black after an hour of waking around unpacking. The place needs looking after a bit better to be honest because it used to be really nice but after a few years of wear and tear and not very through cleaning it's not worth £800+ for the week. Besides the fact that it needs some love, the beds a really comfy, the location is stunning and it's actually a really nice little place, especially if you want to hike or get out on the lake, hence the reason we keep returning. It's worth following Windermere ferry on twitter to check if it's running or not too because if it isn't you've got a lengthy drive around the lake to get to the property. We arrived last week and I forgot to check but when we arrived in the lakes we saw that the ferry was closed for the whole month! Anyway, these houses have their pros and cons but my overall feeling is that they need a bit of a deep clean and a lick of paint (and a lock change)

The property was as described and pictured, small but comfortable and very well located in Ambleside and for exploring the Lakes in general.

The cooking facilities are minimal but we (a couple) managed to cook a few meals perfectly well on the hob and with the microwave, and the property comes supplied with plenty of cooking equipment and crockery. The bathroom appears newly refurbished and is smartly decorated with a powerful shower. It is a nice quiet retreat, away from traffic and though some noise can be heard from the workshop next door, they were very considerate to be quiet before 9am. Supplies at the property are very limited and, as a self catering property, we would have expected some basic self catering essentials to be provided such as cooking oil, salt and pepper, kitchen roll and toilet roll (only 1 supplied) so unfortunately we had to do a quick unplanned shop. There is a sticker on the boiler switch requesting the boiler is not switched off, however the radiator was on when we arrived (July) and the radiator valve seemingly not working. The timer switch is also very noisy, and given the boiler is positioned adjacent to the bed, is something to be aware of if you struggle to sleep with background noise, as we did. One thing that would have been really helpful to know in advance is that the house is down a small narrow street with limited parking. However there is a parking permit provided in the property that can be used for local car parks, and it is also valid in several other council car parks in towns nearby, which was very useful and saved us a lot of money.

Stunning place and location, we arrived late after 9 hours drive only to find no parking !

The cottage name was not easy to find. I was kept on hold after calling the help line! We parked and got out to search for our cottage! Still on hold!!! Found the place and keep our car in unsuitable parking being closer to the ferry bay !!. I had to hang up as I was tired! Once we settled in, we were ready to cook our supper, the oven switch was visible and we could turn on and get some food cooking away we try to get the hob on we couldn’t see the switch! After awhile and removing the knives holder we could see the switch! Then Anthony called me I explained the issue and I mentioned to him the frying pan is so burnt and had thick layers of back flaky enamel! I said we are going to buy a frying pan then He suggested not to do so and promised that we will get a new frying pan! Still waiting !! The next morning We realised the kettle too wasn’t good ! I usually drink lemon water every morning, boiled the kettle and poured water in your white stoneware mug and the water had some black dust “ particals “ not sure what it was! I ringed the kettle several time but still resting these black small particals!! Midday Saturday we decided to cross using the ferry and headed to Windermere town to purchase the frying pan and the kettle!….. I did felt a let down! And waisted a day to cross and purchase equipment! To carry on with our holiday! I took some pictures to keep as evidence and I more than happy to send over.

Cobblestone Cottage is very sweet and well placed in the centre of Ambleside.

It is MUCH smaller than expected (which does not come across in the photographs) and is all rather tired and in need of a refurb. There is no oven, although there was space for one (just a microwave). Although I think it must have been cleaned some time ago, all of the surfaces in the kitchen and bedroom and bathroom felt dusty and grubby and so I cleaned them all before use. The bedroom was so small that it was a real squeeze to get past the end of the bed (past the open stairway) to get to the bathroom. The bathroom door did not shut (when you see the layout, you will see how important this is). The bed was not at all comfortable and the red plastic sofa was totally out of place and rather horrid. The TV was the size of my iPad. The gas boiler (which I had to look straight at from my bed) kept firing up all night long which disturbed by sleep massively. We were not allowed to turn it off. It could be a fabulous place, despite it’s size. The access was a bit dodgy too and we had to literally squeeze past the electricians van (and we are both slim). A couple of times we also had to step over builders stuff on the floor of the cobbled passage. Not at all good value for money. I run my own AirBNB and my standards are much higher. Disappointing accommodation really.

    Frequent questions

    • Is Ambleside worth a visit?

Yes, Ambleside is definitely worth a visit for its scenic beauty and charming atmosphere. Located in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, Ambleside offers stunning views of lakes and mountains, picturesque walks, cosy pubs, a range of outdoor activities and, of course, beautiful holiday homes and Ambleside cottages. The Lake District in general is a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in a beautiful setting, but the charming town of Ambleside alone is worth a visit.

    • How long is the coffin walk in Ambleside?

The Coffin Walk in Ambleside is a circular route that is approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) long, ideal for keen hikers on a walking holiday. The walk takes you through picturesque landscapes, including forests, fields, and beautiful views of Lake Windermere. It's a moderate-level hike that provides a glimpse into the area's history and offers a peaceful and scenic experience. Once finished, you can make the most of your Ambleside holiday cottage by resting your feet, cooling off in the swimming pool or relaxing in the hot tub. Our Ambleside cottages are ideal for walkers, as well as anyone looking for a suitable property in which to stay while the more active people in your group explore!

    • Is Ambleside or Windermere better for self catering accommodation?

Both the lakeland town of Ambleside and Windermere have their own unique charms, so determining which is better for self catering accommodation depends on personal preferences. Ambleside cottages are often in demand due to there being fewer on offer and with limited availability this could make it harder for you to find one on your dates. The centre of Ambleside offers a more relaxed and quaint atmosphere, with its charming village, scenic walks, and proximity to beautiful lakes like Lake Windermere itself. Windermere, on the other hand, is larger and more bustling, with a wider range of amenities, available properties and attractions close by. Another big draw of a lakeland cottage in Windermere is the water-based activities available on Lake Windermere, and convenient transportation links to Bowness on Windermere, Troutbeck Bridge and the rest of the Lake District. Both are popular towns boasting all manner of accommodation, including holiday park resorts and more.

    • Is there a market in Ambleside?

Yes, the charming town of Ambleside hosts a weekly market known as the Ambleside Market. The market takes place on a Wednesday and offers a variety of stalls selling local produce, crafts, clothing, and other goods. It's a great opportunity to explore and discover local products while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the market. If you're hunting for independent shops Ambleside also has those in spades, so don't worry if you forget anything before arriving at one of our Ambleside cottages. You'll find all the amenities you'll need right here!

    • What should you look for in Ambleside cottages?

Ambleside cottages can be difficult to choose between, because there is such a large variety of Ambleside accommodation. If you're after tradition, look for a detached stone built cottage in a tranquil location, with easy access to the Lake District national park. The best Ambleside holiday cottages on our books include Rose Cottage, a fantastic cottage resting on the edge of the lake, a stylish mid terrace property with off road parking, a two bedroom holiday home with wi fi, dishwasher and baby friendly facilities, a short walk from the town of Ambleside.
