A medieval town steeped in history, the winding streets that characterise York are like nothing else. This stunning northern city boasts a wealth of cultural and historic landmarks, from 13th century walls to the magnificent York Minster cathedral. In Roman times York was the capital of Britain and the city’s long and prestigious heritage is everywhere you look. And you will feel rather prestigious yourself as you enjoy a memorable stay in an idyllic York cottage.

Things to do when you stay in York Cottages

It’s a cliché, but a visit to York really is like stepping back in time. While other cities have morphed and changed to keep up with the modern age, there are parts of the city that have remained untouched for nearly two millennia. York’s historic highlights are too numerous to mention, but include the remains of the Roman fort of Eboracum and the medieval street named the Shambles; a definite must visit. There are many more of York’s treasures on display in York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre.

Our UK comedy clubs guide includes some great comedy nights in York.

York is hugely popular with tourists, so you’ll find plenty to see and do as you meander through the ancient streets, including top drawer shops, cafés and restaurants serving hearty, traditional fare. Head away from the city and the tourists to discover some of the most breath-taking natural landscapes in the whole country, including North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast, so don’t forget to pack those walking boots, and a camera.

York cottages are the perfect accommodation if you’re looking to stay in this historic city, giving you the freedom and flexibility to explore, and packed with character. York cottages are your own little hideaway in easy reach of all the main landmarks – making an amazing family holiday that you’ll remember forever.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Toni - Verified booking

Wow, what a beautiful cottage in a lovely location.

The facilities, furnishings, decoration and cleanliness are top quality. Beautiful bedding, plenty of bath towels, quality toiletries, plenty of tea towels, washing up liquid and cleaning cloths, dishwasher tablets, fresh milk, fresh bread, delicious cake and fresh flowers. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped and spotlessly clean, sitting area lovely and cosy with TV, radio, board games, dvd's, books and maps of the area. Having been out all day exploring the area and visiting family in Sunderland it was such a pleasure to return to The Hayloft at the end of a busy day with all our needs catered for. There is literally nothing that is not provided. Sue and Rob made us feel so welcome, we didn't need any assistance from them but they made it perfectly clear that should we need anything just to ask. We loved our stay at this cottage and didn't want to leave, in fact we would happily move in permanently ! Thank you Sue and Rob for providing such a fabulous cottage, enabling us to thoroughly enjoy our stay, we cannot wait to return.

Attractive and spotlessly clean property. Lovely welcome hamper and friendly hosts. Great location. Would have given 5 stars but lots of irritating niggles. Frustratingly they were the sort of things which might become evident to the owners themselves if they were to live in the property for a week. Minor niggles only such as no mirror in the bedroom and small uncomfortable sofas but they did add up. We found the small shower rooms difficult .....the showers themselves were great but there wasn't even one small shelf upon which to place even a contact lens case in the 'ensuite'. Tiny low stools instead of bedside tables were awkward too when you have to have specs, a glass of water, a book and medication etc to hand at night. I guess if we were younger, had fewer aches and pains and better eyesight the holiday would have got 5 stars.......apologies for getting old.

Correspondence prior to our stay was excellent.

On the day of our arrival, Judith met us at the property with a warm and welcoming smile. She was a wonderful host, who paid attention to all the details to ensure we had the ultimate break. Additional touches included a library of informative books and tourist leaflets, dvds and board games. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you would need for a self catering holiday A++ beyond the standard equipped kitchen as she had also provided cling film/foil and sandwich bags. The welcome basket included a pint of milk, a bottle of wine and a large share bag of Yorkshire ready salted crisps. The rooms were spacious for a couple with comfortable beds, crisp linen, decorative cushions and an additional blankets. Overall, The Burrows was cosy and quiet, and led to a really relaxing and peaceful stay. Thank you Judith, we loved it!

We had a lovely break at The Hayloft.

The property was immaculate and provided every little home comfort you could ask for. The beds were comfortable and the property has been fitted out to a very high standard. The owners were very welcoming and friendly and although we didn’t need to I would have felt very happy asking for anything we needed. The welcome basket was a fantastic touch and was filled with yummy bread and cakes. Local apple juice which was amazing. There was milk and water in the fridge which meant we didn’t have to run straight out to buy essentials. We would definitely recommend this property. Lots to do and see around here. Being on a farm with horses and a gorgeous cat was the icing on the cake. Thank you

We really enjoyed our stay at Forge Croft. A quiet location but offering really first class accommodation. The croft was equipped with everything you could need for a relaxed break. Because the location was quiet we tended to eat in most evenings and the kitchen was equipped to a very high standard. There were plenty of places to visit within the area and access to the coast meant some very scenic and quiet driving. Peter and Faye were very informative hosts. Our only criticism would be that finding the croft was not easy as it is not separately signed. A minor point as overall we would certainly visit again in the future. Chris and Liz
