What our customers say about their holidays

    • Edwina Mary - Verified booking

First time with Sykes and I found this property listed as accessible, neccessary as my husband uses a wheelchair and cannot walk at all.

It is not accurately listed as the distance from the car parking space has loose gravel all the way to the front door and it was very difficult dragging him to our car each time we went out, we gave up in the end and he stayed in while I went out. There is absolutely no room for a wheelchair at the side of the bed and I had to move the bed against the wall for my husband to get into bed before me. I moved everything back before leaving the property in accordance with your rules. As a woman of 74 years old I don't believe I or indeed any guest, should have to do this. This property should not be advertised as accessible because it is not. The chairs at the table were not as pictured so my husband could not sit to the table for meals as he didn't feel safe. On a positive note our bedding was clean and the bedroom quiet. We were provided with a shower chair as requested which was really helpfull. The owner was friendly and called to see if we were ok on one occasion. Finally the property was not ready for us at 3pm on arrival and the welcome bottle of wine was noticeable by its absence. I prefer the service provided by airbnb who facilitate contact between owner and guest, I will not use Sykes again.

Had a lovely stay at the Nail Shed celebrating our wedding anniversary.

We were impressed with the facilities. The underfloor heating throughout was lovely. The kitchen was well stocked and the cottage is beautifully furnished. The owners were welcoming and we enjoyed our welcome drinks in the Anvil Inn adjacent to the property. We ate there on both nights of our stay and have to say the fillet steaks were delicious and cooked to perfection. The pub has a cosy feel to it with wood burning stoves in each room. We travelled with our dog and the owner was helpful in suggesting local walks. We visited Cayton Bay which was a beautiful unspoilt stretch of sand for him to run around on. If I was to provide any constructive criticism it would be that the hanging area in the wardrobes could do with being a little higher and I also think the listing could be expanded to include things like hairdryer, tea, coffee provided as these were things I packed unnecessarily as I couldn’t be sure from the listing. I also think as it’s a pet friendly cottage, the provision of dog bowls for food and water might be welcome (I forgot to pack these but have found them provided previously!). Very minor niggles but all in all a wonderful stay.

We had a wonderful stay at the The Grange Cottage 1!

We were very impressed with all the mod cons and the aesthetics of the whole cottage! The hot tub and court yard were just lovely and very well maintained. There were a couple things we noticed throughout our stay that could be improved, the main one was that the shower flooded the whole bathroom, as it was quite fierce and forced the water out! Also the reception on the tv’s were not the best. We could only get channel 1 in the living room, in the twin room we could get all the channels but not great reception and then in the double room we had no channels at all. We noticed there was no tin opener too. Lastly, having three women stay, we found that a dressing table or somewhere to do your makeup etc would’ve been useful to of have. Overall, we had a really lovely stay and your cottage is just charming!

I was given information from Sykes on contacting the owner for the key code number for our stay.

The day before we contacted via the number only to find that the person on the end of the phone was in CYPRUS I was charged 65p as this was made outside my plan and I was unaware. She rang her mother to sort it out. Needless to say I am not happy. Please can things like this be ironed out. The window in the bedroom was twisted and could not close properly so we had a towel stuffed to stop the draft. There was no heating in that room. I have been advised that this has been addressed but not sure if anyone checks. Please could this be passed onto the owners of the Little Bower and make sure they are NOT OUT OF THE COUNTRY when visitors have been given this contact. It certainly taints my use of Sykes as a means of booking a cottage.

Although small and 'bejou' the Nail Shed was a wonderful little cottage and together with The Anvil Inn supplied a superb little nook away from it all.

On Mondays and Tuesdays the pub/restaurant is closed and it was just so quiet, which was a welcome change for us urbanites. You will need a car to explore because it is quite literally the middle of the countryside. We travelled over the wonderful North York Moors to Whitby, in the opposite direction to York and the minster (well worth it!!). Next, the restaurant at The Anvil Inn - what can I say, we were welcomed by our hosts who made us feel like VIPs, but more importantly the food... Steak 10/10, Fish and Chips 10/10 and finally the 'proper' Scampi 12/10. Our Monday to Friday stay was terrific and we returned to our 24/7 hectic lives much refreshed. Thank you to our hosts.
