What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mrs Dodd - Verified booking

Had a lovely stay with extended family. Buckland house was perfect for our needs and welll equipped with everything you’d need. We stayed early March but it would be even better in summer months. The large conservatory was too cold to use really, which is a fantastic space leading out into beautiful gardens and landscape with summerhouse and bbq and pond with running water/stream. The house was large, we all had space including the dogs. Kids loved the bar billiards & playing hide n seek in the dark and man-hunt in the beautiful grounds! The owner was pleasant, popping over to check on us and offer us some wood for the wood burner. The beach is a 5 mins drive away, perfect for dog walking with a pub & café at the end (but not much more). It’s really beautiful but sadly Not really great for wheelchairs or buggy if you want a long walk, as only part of it is pavement, our Niece was on crutches/wheelchair so they had to drive onto Salcombe as they couldn’t push her for the extended walk which was a shame.

The fact you are reading this review I guess you are considering staying at Buckland. The best advice I can give is to stop considering and do it - without any hesitation. Superbly located in rolling farm land within easy reach of all Devon's wonderful attractions, The House is architecturally breathtaking, furnished with style, flair and innovation. Tucked away in the lanes, quiet and peaceful, Buckland House is an imposing and appealing feature of the landscape. Inside the design and attention to detail is great. Traditional kitchen equipped with everything - and more - you might need. Beautiful slate floor leading to extensive conservatory and spacious lounges. Seven bedrooms, delightfully decorated and furnished, comfortable beds with crisp linens and modern en-suiite bathrooms. Furnished patio area, barbecue, games room. All areas impeccably clean and maintained. You may have guessed that our three generations loved our time at Buckland and are delighted to recommend it.

Not telling us that It was impossible to drive into Dartmouth because of the regatta was just negligent.

Leaving the updated parking instructions in the cottage was pointless as we couldn’t drive anywhere in Dartmouth. We had no choice but to go straight to the park and ride we then of course had to pay as we hadn t got the pass with us.By the time we had used the park and ride once without luggage and got to the cottage we then found the updated parking pass.We couldn t get the majority of our belongings from the car until the next day when the regatta was over.It was a very bad start and with some communication from you could have saved us time and trouble. The courtyard as you described did not have bistro furniture in it.The ground was covered in green slimy stuff..We were concerned that the large windows opened so wide.Surely a health and safety worry. It should be made clearer in the details excatly how many steps there are leading to the cottage. It could easily be too much for some people carrying cases and food.

Gull Cottage is in a wonderful location, just a couple of minutes walk from the harbour and in a very quiet laneway (though a little tricky to find first time!

) The cottage is nicely decorated and well equipped though it's a shame there was no welcome pack with tea/coffee/milk etc as we are used to getting in other rentals. We are a family of four, two adults and two young teens. The bedrooms were comfortable, clean and spacious enough for our needs, but I will say that the photos make the living/kitchen area look bigger than it is. If we all wanted to watch TV, 2 had to sit on the (not very comfortable) high stools by the kitchen counter as one sofa was situated under the TV. It wasn't a major issue but for longer stays it may have been necessary to do some rearranging of furniture. More towels would have been lovely but again, a fairly minor issue. I presume if we had been staying a week we'd have had a fresh set available. Great to have two bathrooms though, and the showers were super. Overall I'd recommend Gull Cottage as a comfortable and convenient holiday let.

Nice pretty garden and cottage, and the owners have tried really hard to make it welcoming.

... shame about the inconsiderate neighbours. The people in Hayloft played football with their children against the bedroom wall upstairs at 6.45am for 3 mornings and the nightmare family opposite behind the tall lelandii hedge screamed and shouted and played loud music until past midnight so we didn't sleep well or relax much. Maybe it's quieter during term time? The bathroom needs urgent attention, under the paint the wood around the bath and pipe boxing is rotten and stained. We were picking small fungi off the skirting board by the toilet. Needs a decent king size double bed, and one of the single mattresses needs replacing. Oven is complicated to operate and we only found the manual by accident, some one had hidden it behind a saucepan! The site manager needs to paint the yellow car park spaces again so 4 cars can get onto the concrete in wet weather please.
