What our customers say about their holidays

    • Confirmed Guest - Verified booking

This is a lovely property, more than adequate for our needs , and in a rural setting with a pretty semi-wild garden. Our host was responsive to our queries. We were the first guests since the winter and although the house was ready for us one or two things were overlooked. The downstairs wet room had a rim of black mould around the water in the pan, the salt grinder had no salt. However most significantly the wet room shower was not working, a major oversight. Fortunately my husband although still in recovery from knee surgery was able to move to the upstairs bedroom and use the upstairs shower room. The house guide gave minimal instructions re operating the TV, we are not used to a Sky system. And we overlooked the right remotes on a side table and found others which had no batteries. Our hostess responded and was very understanding when I rang back to say I had found the right ones in working order and she explained the system. I had mentioned that the battery bedside light in the top bedroom was too dim to read by , and she offered a rechargeable one which worked well as I was able to use my own charger if needed. It is obvious that the property can be used as a holiday care home, but is well equipped for family use when it rains. We enjoyed the wildlife, especially birds, and with permission enjoyed using our light moth trap to see many moths new to us. The kitchen and utility facilities are excellent and the heating good. We had nearly two weeks of sunshine which enhanced our visit.

We visited the property in August of last year and fell in love.

As soon as we got home we re-booked to come back in the February school holidays and already we are looking to go back in the six weeks holidays as even our 2 year old is upset to be home. The house is so comfortable and clean, it has everything you need for your stay, it feels like a home away from home. It's also full of wildlife around the property and so quiet for being near a main road. The "traffic" isn't a problem in the slightest you get the odd few cars during the day and hardly any at all on a night. At night if you get a clear sky, go and sit and look at the stars it's an unbelievable experience if you live in a city like ourselves. The owners are lovely, lovely people and will help you with anything they can. I love the tray the owner leaves on arrival for you, it feels so personalised to the family visiting somehow! the owner also popped round to tell us a few places we could visit nearby with our children! I must also mention the neighbors as they make their own honey and it's unbelievable and their dog Finn is the most gentle German Shepherd I've ever come across he deserves a mention in this review. We can't wait to return again as soon as we can.

      The cottage exceeded our expectations.

It was a real home from home with the bonus of a stunning view and lots of visiting birds. Liz was so helpful in showing us places to visit. Rob built a gate while we were there which enclosed the garden for our medium sized pooch, but a tether was also provided. The cottage was comfortable and we loved the conservatory and little reading snug. It had so many touches that showed how thoughtfully it had been set out for guests needs. It was well maintained and a new panel radiator and large fridge freezer had been installed the day we arrived. A bonus was to find a laundry room in the house. The location of the property was ideal for touring the island as it was about 1 mile away from the middle point of the main road that runs from top to bottom of the island so nearly all sights were no more than an hours drive at the most. Stornoway and the lovely Lews Castle and the Callanish standing stones being the closest. All in all a super cottage and definitely a good choice. Highly recommend.

The interior of the cottage is lovely.

Very clean, spacious and well equipped. Brenda gave me a very warm welcome on arrival. Unfortunately the garden and proximity to the A68 meant we cut our stay short. The small grass area with tables and chairs is separated by a hedge to the very busy road so sitting out wasn't really an option for us given traffic noise. In addition, as was noted in the property description before booking, we couldn't let our dog off lead in the garden which proved a bit of a hindrance. The garden really isn't appropriate for having a dog in my opinion as there is only a narrow stretch of grass and a lot of gravel which our dog wasn't keen on! I appreciate my comments on the external space and proximity to the busy road is a personal thing and others may not be concerned about traffic noise. It was a deal breaker for us and the lack of sleep due to traffic noise right through the night (had to have windows open as so hot) unfortunately hampered our stay.

We had a lovely stay at Smithy House.

We were a multi generational family group with a dog. The cottage was cosy, warm and friendly. A great parlour kitchen for family meals and a cosy lounge for playing board games during the evening. The bedrooms were lovely and the beds were really comfortable. The boys enjoyed having the top floor to themselves :) The cottage is located close to the historical Kilmartin and we enjoyed walking to the stones and Cairns, then on to Kilmartin for a delicious pub lunch at the local Kilmartin Hotel. The cottage has easy access to many other activities and we were out every day, visiting Oban, Isle of Arran, Tarbert Castle, Avich Waterfalls and much more. It was easy to pop out to top up food supplies with Lochgilphead only 12 minutes away, having a petrol garage, Spar and a well stocked Co-op. So in summary we had a great holiday and would definitely recommend the place.
