Very clean, well organised cottage in the middle of Malton.

Walking distance to the station and the market place and the feature shops and cafes. The cottage itself is very well situated. The church bells didn't bother us. The road noise was quite noticeable and cars using the lane as a short cut but the roadworks are to blame and they aren't scheduled to go on much longer. The cottage is clean and neat. The stairs are a bit scary for people with big feet :) but its a small cottage so it's to be expected. Everything in the cottage looks new and is modern. The patio is lovely and a good place to read (or snooze). Didn't really use the hot tub much but it looked great in its little gazebo. The only thing we would have liked added to the cottage would be a little coffee table in the living room but I appreciate its a small space and the sofa is a pull out bed so it might not be practical. In Malton we visited the monthly market and bought lots of lovely food. We had an ice cream at the Groovy Moo and a Gin at the Rare Bird Distillery. We had Sunday lunch at the Talbot Malton which was excellent. The Yorkshire pudding dessert was very special. We had a couple of good breakfasts in Malton at cute cafes. The people of Malton are lovely Yorkshire folk and are very friendly. Morrisons is very close to the cottage although I wouldn't recommend their car charger as its very busy. There is a better charger in the car park opposite Yates and Sons which was never busy. The parking situation seemed odd at first but its actually very close by when you get your bearings and it was good to know the car was safely parked especially because we didn't use it every day. We got the train to York twice and went to the Races which was amazing! We also did the bus tour of York. Who knew that Dick Turpin is buried there! Also went to the designer outlet which was comparable to the ones we'd been to in Florida and is a good place to browse and have a coffee. Overall this cottage is clean, well appointed and a great base for exploring and we will recommend it to friends and family.

What a beautiful weeks stay in such a fabulous house and grounds!

We certainly made the most of the glorious weather we were so lucky to have by playing all the outdoor games provided in the gorgeous grass paddock along with our two dogs. We did a lot of lounging on the patio and dipped into the hot tub with iced aperyol spritz (plenty of green dye/freezer space for refreshments!!!) Said hello daily to the friendly horse and sheep who made for welcome company during the stay! There’s something rather magical bathing in a hot tub whilst gazing at a beautiful horse shaded under a tree in a sunny green field and then later to the countryside starry nights sky. We definitely made the most of the kitchen facilities of which there were plenty and nibbled most days, cooked most evenings and ventured out to The Stoned Trough (which was delicious) one evening. The bed was insanely comfy and all rooms furnished to such a tasteful and high quality. All the showers were hot, powerful and never fell short despite the number of people staying/using them. We loved mooching about in the robes provided too, how can you not feel relaxed and in holiday mode in a robe!! The local walks we had were all delightful, down at Kirkham Abbey and along a couple of the rivers nearby. The footpath maps (online) are most certainly not a 100% given so we did come across a few fields overgrown over path with nettles/rape seed which we embraced, some more willingly than others! All in all a tremendous holiday, enjoyed by both Hens for the initial weekend and then my family for the remainder of the week. Thank you so much for the hospitality of Alexandra and Michael. Firstly for creating such a wonderful place to stay (we ALL enjoyed looking through the book!) and being so accommodating with our very few needs. All the best.

Garthgate Lodge is an exceptional place to stay.

Sarah, the owner, has thought of everything. As an example, Sarah caters for your dog better than a number of places cater for the fee paying humans. There's dog treats, poo bags, dog bed, bowls, etc. As for the Lodge itself, it is equipped to a very high standard, I would say better than most peoples homes. The layout is perfect, the rooms are a great size, the walk-in shower is brilliant and big enough for two (only for water saving reasons of course :) ). The hot tub is a god send and being undercover, means regardless of the weather, it can be enjoyed all year round. The garden is dog friendly (there is a barrier which goes across the Lodge entrance to prevent your dog from escaping) and a perfect sun trap. The welcome basket and food provided was absolutely a lovely, tasteful touch. Sarah as an owner, lives on an adjacent property and communication with her was spot on. Having spoken to Sarah on a couple of occasions, she is a lovely person, enjoys catering for guests in the Lodge and really does make people feel welcome. Her suggestion of a nearby beach for our dog was impeccable, so much nicer than Whitby, both for our dog and ourselves. A nicer host you could not find! The best compliment I can give is that we will be coming back here in the near future, to explore Yorkshire a bit more and to enjoy the Lodge again. Would I recommend Garthgate Lodge to others? I would but don't want to as it is a gem I'd rather keep to myself.

Just come back from church hill, perfect location.

It was a lovely stay, very clean and had everything we needed, hot tub was a definite bonus. Bed was firm but comfortable for us. The back yard was lovely with the flowers. Morrisons and Lidl is in walking distance. Only thing I would suggest is a lamp in living room for evening instead of having to have the big light on, not essential though. As per a previous review it was busy cars but there were temporary lights up which probably enhanced this however this didn't bother us as we were out most of the time. The church bells are lovely to hear so if you are expecting a lie in then don't stay here as they start at 7am every 15mins till 10pm, however you do get used to them so didn't notice too much towards end of week. Malton is a lovely town, highly recommend India restaurant, Royal Oak (old Malton) 1mile from church Hill for food. Its definitely recommended to book a table for all places in Malton as one evening we couldn't get in anywhere. We also used tangs Chinese. Maybe some info on local doctors, nearest hospital and vets etc in the folder, as our dog was either stung or bitten and had a reaction (his face swelled) and needed to find a vet so can recommend battle flats vets, Norton which is a 10min walk. They saw him ASAP. Wouldn't have thought of this usually but would have been quicker if there had been number to hand. Thank you for a lovely stay x would definitely stay again x
