What our customers say about their holidays

By Steven E on 24-May-2018 Lovely House - perfect for big families. Stayed at Knowles House with 5 other family members including elderly parents and a dog. Wonderful house with a terrific garden. Weather was perfect and garden was superb for chilling, sunbathing or even Yoga. Met by the owners who gave us a guided tour and explained everything we needed to know from the heating to the recycling. Lovely clean bedrooms with a twin on the ground floor with its own small lounge area perfect for the elderly who have difficulty with stairs. Layout of the kitchen with the cookers and crockery, separate sink room and a third utility room with large fridge and freezers take some getting used to but no big deal. There’s a standard cooker / low level grill if your not confident with using the Aga. Big flat screen TV in the lounge and plenty of small ones in the bedrooms if your that desperate to watch TV. Showers in the bedrooms were very good and we had no issues with hot water no matter what the time of day. Lovely walk for dog walkers alongside local river one minute from the house. Journeys out to local coastal towns didn’t take long in a car. Make your own mind up about the best ones to visit - we liked Beer but won’t be rushing back to Seaton! Lovely coastal walks between Seaton and Branscombe. Took a local taxi (The very helpful Bert from Seaton Taxi’s who took all 6 of us+ Dog) to the Ship Inn at Axmouth for a couple of evening meals - Quality food, highly recommended - make sure you book. Would definitely recommend this house. Show less Stayed: May 2018 Thank Steven E

We enjoyed our stay at the Shippen very much.

Its in a lovley scenic location, away from everything with countryside views but close enough for visits to Seaton,Budleigh Salterton,Exmouth,Sidmouth etc so it provided an ideal base for us. The owners Sue & Simon are available for advice if needed & left us fresh eggs, milk, apple juice & lovley cake. Our cottage was well equipped with a homely feel to it. We had a 4 berth cottage all ground floor & there are 2 more holiday lets there too (not single storey) so a larger family group could go together. Although we didn’t use it,except to borrow dvds, the large gamesroom provided, table football, ping pong table, games, books, dvds & there were sofas to sit on too,it must be a great bonus for parents in wet weather! There are facilities for laundry in a nearby shared utility room,& good recycling boxes in the barn housing the bins, all clearly labelled so no guesswork! Outside there are ducks, chickens ,a crowing cockerel & some cows so any doggy visitors need to be on their leads! The Shippen has a patio with chairs & table for use on warmer days and there’s a nice grassed orchard garden to the rear of the cottages available for guests to use. It’s perfect for countryside lovers who want to get away from it all.

My family and I stayed in Barley House for a week after Christmas and over new years eve.

The hosts had decorated the property with a Christmas tree, which was a lovely welcome for our party. We selected the property for the spacious open plan living accommodation for our party of five and our labrador. There was plenty of room for the dog cage and we were able to walk our dog around the grounds of the property. There were local walks listed in the accommodation guide in the property which was very helpful. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of utensils, pans and ovenware. However, if any future guests did not want to cook, there were plenty of places to eat near by. And a pub within a stones throw. The three bedrooms where spacious; the first floor having their own bathrooms, and the ground floor having a neighbouring bathroom. The underfloor heating was lovely on your feet in the bathrooms. As were the waterfall showers, fluffy towels, and cotton bedding. Overall the property was comfortable, warm, homely and spacious. We would certainly return and recommend Barley House to our friends and family.

Lovely bungalow with everything you could possibly need.

Good quality kitchen equipment and plenty of crockery and dishes etc. A few things that we think need addressing; The kitchen door is not easy to lock from the inside, door needs to be pushed hard to turn the key. Patio door also stiff to lock. Hardly any pegs for clothes dryer. Bathroom door sticks. Shower head doesn't sit in the slot properly. Other than the food waste bin, there were no colour coded bins for general or recycling rubbish, as suggested in instructions. All bins outside the shed have broken lids and were full of rainwater. Hall curtains coming off hooks. 2 end bedrooms curtains are so light that they don't shut out any light. The toilet could do with a towel holder on the wall, as the freestanding one takes up a lot of room in what's a small space. The above are very small things, however, would have given 10/10. Please dont think that we're being picky as we loved it and would have booked straight away for next year, however, see that the cost has gone up over 30%, so unfortunately that's too expensive for us.

Reviewed 30 August 2017 Beautiful Victorian Home I stayed at Knowles with 11 family members including my elderly parents and children and it was a wonderful break for all of us. Knowles is a beautiful Victorian home that the owners once lived in with their parents. The house is very comfortable and cosy and each room has been left sympathetic to its origin which we all found lovely. The garden is amazing, the owners employ a gardener who clearly loves the garden as his own and keeps it pristine with beautiful flower beds and even a cottage garden with herbs etc growing in it which we were able to use. We were very lucky with the weather so we chose to stay at the house most days (we usually eat out a lot) but because the garden was so lovely we chose most days to hang around and eat Alfresco. The only negative I can think of is that we left our 2 dogs at home, what a mistake, they would have been in seventh heaven.
