What our customers say about their holidays

    • Anna - Verified booking

Generally good facilities as shown, trip advisor reviews don't match those in the visitor book - generally good reviews shown overall.

Some dated decoration but homely and warm. The downstairs cream carpet showed the usage but was ok. Well stocked kitchen area and the cottage had a new wood burner which was great, I think we may have been the first to use this as it was burning off something the first couple of uses, but was no bother after that. A cosy cottage and great for our visit, we were out most of the day exploring. The outbuilding with the washing machine and tumble drier was handy as we were quite muddy after cycling! Didn't use the garden area (not warm enough to sit out). The flowers and cake on arrival were lovely, thank you. We had a great week there and it is a super base for exploring the moors. Lambs nearby as we went in April and even the occasional owl hoot for added wildlife! The ring of bells pub 20m up the road is great as is the Bridford inn (in Bridford!), super food and a range of ales, if that is your thing. There are many other good pubs around as well!

To begin with: The photo of the property on the 'advert' is not accurate as it actually depicts the neighbouring property - this is due to the angle from which the photo is taken - the neighbours property proceeds Little Gate Cottage.

As dog owners who instructed that we would be taking our dog expected the garden to be outside the door of the cottage. In fact it was across a driveway to a neighbouring property. It had the appearance of somewhere which had not been touched by a gardener for many months. The 'garden furniture' was in a disgusting state - so dirty that we would never consider using it. To describe the area as a garden is taking a liberty, it would better be described as a wilderness. The cottage itself needed a good clean. The décor is tired and needs updating. Throughout our stay we could not get any reception on the television. After taking one look at the cooker we decided that we would not use it due to its filthy condition. We will never return to this cottage

Superb views towards Exeter and a lot further.

A footpath at the bottom of the garden and a within a hundred metres or so there are more stunning views in the opposite direction to the south west and towards the sea. There are other footpath walks within a short walk from the house, some through woodland and some over hills. We walked up the lane a little way and down a lane to the left and saw two red deer one evening. A reasonably short distance from Exeter and also lots more exciting places to visit. In the other direction 10 - 20 minutes drive took us onto Dartmoor. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. There is normally a lot of wildlife to see in the field opposite but this had just been cut for hay and we didn't see much. An idea would be to have a map of the footpaths in the cottage.

I stayed in this lovely cottage for several weeks whilst between houses, after an earlier visit in the year when on holiday.

The cottage was ideal and everything that I needed for the duration was already there; I lacked for nothing and the welcome gifts were great. The owners are really lovely people and were very helpful and kind, even taking in my mail, concerning my house purchase, from solicitors, and providing a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Exeter, 4 miles away, could be seen across open rolling countryside, with sheep in the fields, and it would have been lovely to sit outside with a drink to relax and absorb the relaxing atmosphere but, sadly, the weather and temperature in December was not conducive to it! I can heartily recommend Ash Cottage, set in the countryside but convenient for Exeter and the rest of Devon. I shall certainly be back!

Sharon and David were very nice and looked after us really well.

The cottage was lovely and cosy and we really enjoyed our stay there. There were card games, board games; even a pair of binoculars with a diary to note down the local wildlife that we spotted. They also provided a very unexpected welcome hamper. Overall a very well equipped cottage and the best holiday we've had with Sykes Cottages! (so far) Although it snowed quite a lot (it was January so bad weather was inevitable), there were lots of local walks; Exeter was only up the road and Dartmoor was just a short drive away. If you're into geology then Dawlish and the coastiline is definitely worth a visit and is also only a short drive away. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have recommended the cottage to our friends and family.
