"Unbeknownst to me, and having started at the wrong end of Appledore's esplanade, I found myself at the front door next to the 'cottage' I had stayed in with my son a few years ago !Forget 'fisherman's cottage' and think Homes and Gardens. Upon opening the door you will look into a world of elegant tones, wonderful views and everything you might need to make your stay enjoyable. Having the river, in high tide, lapping against your holiday home is sheer bliss . Blessed as I was with sunny days and just the call of the birds breaking a relaxing silence, I could not have wished for more. When the tide drops, spits of river bed are exposed and the sea birds, waders and egrets come in to rest bathe and feed upon what might have been exposed or left by the fleeing tide. I had the best amount of birds to watch and had to buy new binoculars as I had left mine at home !My greatest joy was to hear and then see Curlew, that I had recently read, have been placed on the 'RED LIST', it is tragic that we continue to lose species.I find Appledore the most soporific place and the people so friendly. A first morning trip to the newsagents, tucked away in a back street, and I am greeted by a lovely lady who recognises me, and we start were we left off, Mrs A had her hip done, working news about the shipyard ( famous and from the 1800's. has announced it will close, due to lack of orders. A severe blow ) yes, the winter was ok, have you come down for the Literary Festival, Mrs B's shop is closing and there is still a queue up the street when the Fish and Chip shop is open.Bidefords is very close with a branch of the excellent Morrisons and Barnstable is 15 to 20 mins away. All in all, one of those holiday stays when you do not want to come home and the thoughts of could I make the move will rove around in your head whilst you stay. And finally, I was to be seen lying on the pavement in front of Estate Agents window, sobbing, having just seen the prices and the properties available !I must add my thanks to the owners for such a lovely welcome hamper and a delicious bottle of wine. I toasted them with my thanks and good health."

"Myself, partner and dog Lola have just come back from our holidays... and I truly can’t recommend it enough! We arrived late in the evening which Mike and Sheila accommodated for us, we had everything in the property which we could possibly of needed during our stay including eco friendly products.... Theirs even allocated dog towels and disposal bags, it has such a dog friendly welcome and accommodating. With being 5 months pregnant it was ideal for relaxing and exploring, all the furnishing were comfortable and clean... All the property was spotless and fresh, we had lovely scones which Mike and Sheila had given us alongside three sets of beautiful hand picked flowers! And just before leaving on our last day we was given two lovely bouquets to take home with us! We did endless amounts of exploring and adventures... Crow point was recommended by Mike which was spot on for Lola to be let off the lead and run freely along the sea without it being too crowded. Theirs plenty to do and some great places to eat. I would highly recommend going if you’re after a country get a away especially if you have fur babies! We will definitely be returning next summer! Thank you again Mike and Sheila."

"The Shed With A View is a perfect holiday hideaway. The view from the floor to ceiling windows is spectacular and the peace and quiet is just what I needed as a break from my busy life! It was also perfect for my dog as he could wander about on the enclosed terrace before I was ready to take him out for the day. I took my time in the mornings enjoying breakfast whilst admiring the view and ventured out mid morning to visit Tarr Steps on Exmoor, Exmouth Beach and various locations on Dartmoor, all less than an hours drive from the cottage. Near by Tiverton has all the shops you might need for a longer stay, Cadbury Castle is within a short walk and there are also local walks to be enjoyed. The cottage is extremely well designed and very eco friendly. I did not need the heating on except in the late evening and there is a very sophisticated ventilation system which ensures fresh air circulates through out the building. The shower is also very powerful with loads of hot water. Mike and Sheila are really friendly and on hand for any assistance or advice required. All together an ideal rural retreat in the beautiful county of Devon."

"Very spacious lodge in a wonderful setting, with views over a lake and plenty of wildlife. The heaters in the lodge soon warmed up the rooms on a frosty morning, and the sun warms the building throughout the day. The balcony, which is secure for dogs to wander around, is accessible from the outside door or patio windows, and there is a range of comfortable seating and a table to enjoy the surrounding area. The lodge was not without its dusty areas, and a welcome pack of milk and tea bags would have been lovely, after a long journey, but not the end of the world. However, one thing that we would have appreciated is a book of information, to know where the nearest shops were and, in the event of an emergency, where to find the local doctors, or vets. Also the stove was a challenge as there were no apparent instructions on how to use it. By trial and error, we managed it after a few mishaps! Apart from that and the narrow lanes to the site, it is a relaxing area to stay and well worth considering staying."

"Oak cottage is an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of inner city life. The cottage is tastefully decorated offering a perfect home from home feel with an excellent kitchen and exceptionally comfortable beds. The enclosed garden is perfect for dogs and has the added bonus of an array of birdlife. Most nights we fell asleep to the hooting of owls and awoke to woodpeckers. Although very remote it did not 'feel' isolated, in fact, the property was so comfortable and comforting 'like your favourite blanket'. The cleanliness and warm welcome from Maria was lovely - the scones were a delicious welcome gift washed down with a perfect cuppa. The ponds on the property and the field offered a quick walk and run for the dog before lying down in front of the wood burner for the night. If you want a perfect getaway I would highly recommend a visit. We will definitely return."
