What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ian - Verified booking

Lovely well equipped cottage in a beautiful location, ideally situated for Whitby, Grosmont - Goathland, Scarborough.

In fact you can walk out of the front door and enjoy stunning walks without travelling anywhere. The pub ‘The Horse Shoe Inn’ is literally next door a 20 meter walk across the grass where you can grab an excellent meal but you definitely need to book as it’s virtually impossible to walk in and just get a table! If you can’t get into ‘The Horse Shoe Inn’ then the pubs’ sister pub which is 2 and a half miles away is an excellent option, seems to be easier to book a table in here called The Fox and Rabbit’ also an excellent meal. I walked down to Levisham station a couple of times to see the steam trains it’s a one and a half mile walk ( just over 3 miles there and back) the hills on the way back are quite challenging as they are seriously steep! It’s also possible to walk to The Hole of Horcum from the cottage which is a beautiful setting. Nearest shops are back in Pickering where we stocked up out supplies, there’s a LIDL and a Spar As for the cottage itself everything thought of, well equipped and comfortable, shower wonderful after a hot sweaty day walking, washing machine and line outside to dry, everything except the two armchairs in the kitchen which for some reason didn’t have their cushions on them and we spent the majority of our time sat on these with small cushions as substitutes as it was so cool temperature wise in the kitchen area. The only other thing that we didn’t like was the recycling arrangements, everybody by now recycles and it’s instilled in us and I have no problem putting bins and boxes outside to be collected by the bin men whilst on holiday but taking our bottles to bottle banks in Pickering which is seven miles away is a no go for us!

This was our second holiday in the last 12 months at Little Bower.

We love it. The cottage is very comfortable, clean and cosy. It is ideal for a retired active couple such as ourselves. It is perfectly situated being just off the main street of Hawes and next to all facilities such as groceries etc. This is especially important to us as we do not own a car and travel to Hawes by train and then the excellent Little White Bus service fetching and taking us to the remote Garsdale train station at the start and end of our holiday. We were very impressed by how friendly, helpful and efficient the cottage owner's daughter was in sorting a problem with the water heating after our arrival. It was fixed by sorting the timer promptly the very next morning by their appointed tradesman. This was at no inconvenience to ourselves as, by arrangement the tradesman could access the cottage without us needing to be there. This was very helpful to us as we had planned to take the early bus to Leyburn for a day out and enjoyed a lovely day there. We have been holidaying at Hawes for over 30 years and for most of that time we came with our touring caravan and our 2 boys and stayed at the Brown Moor site. They are now in their late 30s and have their own families and we no longer have a caravan. We intend to come back twice each year and look forward to spending these breaks at the Little Bower.

Overall we had a nice week in February. The hosts were lovely and met us on arrival. The cottage was cosy and comfortable. The furnishings however are dated. The kitchen lacks utensils and equipment to be able to use it fully. The pillows didn’t have protectors on. The rear garden is nothing like it looks in the pictures and was in bad need of a power wash. The flags were slippy as were covered in moss and algae. There were also steps in the garden which were difficult to negotiate. The main issue with the property is the location and this not being as described. It is very close to the village however this is up a steep hill. There is no-where to walk from the cottage that doesn’t involve a steep hill. Parking was also not ideal. It is on the road facing the cottage - the road is extremely busy for a rural village. Once parked you have to walk on a patch of grass to access the passenger side of the car. The village has some nice shops but the pubs were poor. Im sorry but we wouldnt recommend or stay again. With updating and maintenance in the garden it could be massively improved. However, nothing can be done about the hill or parking facilities.

Had a lovely stay at the Nail Shed celebrating our wedding anniversary.

We were impressed with the facilities. The underfloor heating throughout was lovely. The kitchen was well stocked and the cottage is beautifully furnished. The owners were welcoming and we enjoyed our welcome drinks in the Anvil Inn adjacent to the property. We ate there on both nights of our stay and have to say the fillet steaks were delicious and cooked to perfection. The pub has a cosy feel to it with wood burning stoves in each room. We travelled with our dog and the owner was helpful in suggesting local walks. We visited Cayton Bay which was a beautiful unspoilt stretch of sand for him to run around on. If I was to provide any constructive criticism it would be that the hanging area in the wardrobes could do with being a little higher and I also think the listing could be expanded to include things like hairdryer, tea, coffee provided as these were things I packed unnecessarily as I couldn’t be sure from the listing. I also think as it’s a pet friendly cottage, the provision of dog bowls for food and water might be welcome (I forgot to pack these but have found them provided previously!). Very minor niggles but all in all a wonderful stay.

      What a find.

This cottage ticks all the boxes. Just like home, well better than home, because we don't have a pub next door at home. My only request would be to have a smart speaker in the kitchen, but otherwise everything was better than expected. We had some lovely walks, although we passed on the walk down to the station because our dog couldn't jump over the stile at the top of the hill, and the walk along the road was very narrow in places, so we used the car. Park all day only £3, [Pickering is £7], but then you will have to get the train The pub next door, was very busy and we had to book 2 days in advance, even then they could be fully booked. Cant wait to return to Manor Cottage, as I said earlier what a find. Many thanks to the owners for renting this property. 5 stars
