What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jess - Verified booking

We loved our stay at Hartswood farm!

I was quite skeptic to book the place as there were not many reviews published and none recently, but the place was lovely! Exactly as pictured and described, and we were welcomed with fresh eggs, milk and cake which was very sweet and generous. The pool was a beautiful and relaxing addition, and the goats also deserve a shout out. The hosts were responsive to any queries and we tried 2 pubs in the area that were recommended in the handbook and they were lovely and both dog friendly. Our only criticisms and things to note is that the stairs up to the apartment can get quite tiring after a while, especially for our elderly dog and they can be quite slippery in the rain so probably not best for anyone with mobility issues, but they are well advertised in the property listing so this is merely just an observation! The TV is rather old and quite grainy, and the remote was terribly temperamental so an update would be beneficial but the dvd player and selection of movies available to borrow downstairs is a lovely touch. Sofas were also a bit hard and positioned a little strange for the TV so were quite uncomfortable. Bedding was also quite large for the quilts which was a little irritating as they were either tucked under the mattress or super long and hitting the floor. Finally, and this may just be me, but I did find the bedrooms rather eerie, especially the twin room with the large alcove space to the right side of the beds. Perhaps a lighter, brighter colour may improve the atmosphere of those two rooms. Overall though, our stay was lovely, relaxing, clean and dog friendly and we would happily come back. We’ve already recommended the place to our friends and family

We had a great time at Fauna’s Corner, it is situated in Captains Cooks Haven, which is quiet and peaceful and within easy walking distance to the centre of Whitby.

Our first impressions were of a well presented cottage, the kitchen is small but has all the appliances that you need, the fridge is old and rusty at the bottom of the door and needed defrosting. There were most things that we needed to cook a meal but we had to go buy a coffee maker as there wasn’t one provided also there wasn’t a colander for draining vegetables, pasta etc. The lounge and bedrooms were comfortable and well presented although surfaces were dusty. The bathroom was the room that let the whole place down, the hand basin is cracked and is set really low down. The shower is over the bath, but is very low as the roof slopes over the bath, I could only just stand up in the bath with my head touching the ceiling, at its highest setting the water from the shower head reached the middle of my shoulder blades, in order to get washed successfully the shower head has to be removed from the holder and hand held, washing my hair was a nightmare. I am 5’ 7” but my husband is 6’ 2” so he had more problems when showering, in fact he called it his daily limbo dance! We could have had a bath but that is very small too. The owners have tried very hard to make the cottage stylish and comfortable but for me I think fewer pictures and trimmings with the money spent on updating the bathroom would improve things greatly.

We really enjoyed our time at the Old Wagon Shed Cottage.

The hot tub was a great experience especially after dark. The tub was cleaned, re-filled and checked daily by the owner. We didn't use the log burner but this would be very cosy in the cooler months. The lounge was spacious with a Chester style leather sofa, pseudo chaise-lounge, easy chairs and a large flat screen TV with Netflix etc. The bedrooms were well appointed with comfy beds, the master en-suite being especially good. Nearby there is a large well kept grassy area with a large tripod BBQ. A few things that would have been of benefit was somewhere to dry washing, either a couple of pull out clothes lines by the hot tub or access to a rotary dryer. We found it a little difficult getting towels dry some days. Alternatively a condensing dryer would not take up too much space in the kitchen. A second shower or mixer tap set would help in the bathroom, especially when four or more adults are staying. The kitchen needs a salad bowl, a couple of serving dishes, a water jug and a non-stick frying pan. The cupboards could be rearranged to provide at least one cupboard for food. These comments shouldn't be taken in a negative way just our thoughts that maybe of help. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

What can I say about this property the photo's don't actually tell you, we stayed here over the weekend from Friday 2nd October and well.

.. this property is just truly amazing. The property is just as amazing in reality, the decor is just amazing throughout the house, part of me did actually want to try and pack the fabulous four poster bed and the chaise in the car to take it home with me. Helen and Lee have really done an amazing job!... Obviously times are hard at the minute but Helen made our stay just wonderful and safe. When we arrived at the property it was just absolutely spotless, hand sanitiser station on entry if you wished for it and the hot tub cleaned daily. The welcome pack containing Bread, scones, jam, biscuits, cereals, tea, coffee, milk and butter not to mention the bottle of prosecco was also just an wonderful and thoughtful addition. (Sorry we didn't save it for you Helen!) Plus the wood for the wood burning stove, which I admit we did use everyday not because the house was cold, far from it. But because it made our evenings playing board games in the front room that much more cosy. Helen made us truly feel welcome and we are all already planning on when we want to return!

I so wanted to write a fantastic review as upon arrival we were delighted with the cottage.

The area is outstanding, the cottage is in a lovely position and initially we really found the cottage comfortable, bright and welcoming. There were 4 adults and one baby and there was space and comfort for all . However as the first day unfolded we found we had to wash the kitchen equipment, the light switches were sticky with dirt , the bathroom sink was cracked , you could not shower properly as the ceiling sloped down , there were not enough glasses for water or cider etc , the grill tray for the grill pan did not fit , really annoying. We had paid £900 for our 3 nights , I understand we payed more than usual as it was a special event weekend in Whitby, however I would have thought this afforded us the luxury of more than one toilet roll for 4 people !! The surprising thing was the owners very generously left us a superb bottle of gin , tonic waters and chocolates, but I wish they’d have spent the money on toiletries and glasses . I’m sorry to write this as we had a fabulous time and if these issues were addressed we would go back again .
