What our customers say about their holidays

The cottage is cozy and comfortable but the real selling point at Riverside cottage is the fantastic outdoor space, wildlife, and scenery.

It’s a little slice of heaven- stunning. We took our 2 dogs, both high energy dogs who love to be outdoors. One has no recall and can usually only be walked on a lead. The cottage has a really big, beautifully maintained, enclosed garden which isn’t shared with any of the other cottages. But more importantly, it has a lovely big field/meadow area adjoining it with safe banks down to the river. The field is part of the estate and fully enclosed, other than a gate at the far end (you just need to check it’s been closed before letting your dogs off as there are sheep further down the track). All 4 cottages have access to the field/river but we didn’t see a single other person using it all week. Was such a luxury to have it to ourselves. Our dogs (and myself and my husband) had a fantastic time in the water in the sunshine. Absolutely made our holiday being to be able to let the dogs have the run of the field for hours. They’ve never slept so well. A personal highlight for me was seeing the kingfisher on the river. We saw them every day while sat, enjoying breakfast on the table in the garden. Every direction you look from the cottage garden is beautiful scenery. Mountains with red kite gliding above them , the river and woodland with birds galore, fish jumping out of the water, ornate chimney tops, and the colourful boarders in the garden. Owners were very friendly and welcoming. Not intrusive in the slightest. The kitchen is very compact but perfectly big enough for me and my husband. You might struggle with 5 guests though. I couldn’t help but think the large shower room would be better utilised as a kitchen and the kitchen as a compact bathroom. My only very slight gripes were that the windows could have done with a more recent clean (spiderwebs in abundance) and the little yard area off the kitchen could have been spruced up a bit. Also, had the adjoining cottage (Gardener’s Cottage)been occupied, I would have been concerned about privacy as there is only a locked internal door separating the two cottages and I think sounds may travel. We were, however, lucky enough to have the other cottage vacant during our stay. I really wouldn’t let this put you off though. With the outdoor space and surrounding scenery, you’ll spend most of your time enjoying outdoors. On the whole, the place was spotlessly clean, no trace of dogs. Shower was great. We had a fantastic time and we would absolutely love to come back.

      The bungalow is lovely.

its fairly isolated, up a little track past a farm, although the shepherds hut which is also available to rent, is just over the garden hedge, this was unoccupied on our visit, so our privacy wasn't disturbed. The views sre great, and its very peaceful. The owner/manager popped by with additional bedding and was polite and friendly. There is pretty much everything you need here. A well equiped kitchen - with probably a few too many oven/serving dishes in the cupboards! Comfortable dining area with double doors out to the garden and double doors into the lounge. Its a cosy lounge with a small TV and lovely log burner, the back of the settee tilts for comfort (I'm writing this because at first when it dropped down we thought we'd broken it) The bed in the double is quite soft and the other mattresses in the family room sag a little, and the pillows are quite firm. I think several people mentioned the lack of shower. The handheld shower head and hose in the bath is fine, my husband ings nearly 6ft and was able to shower and wash his hair without any problems. We loved the hot tub, which was very clean warm and had a couple of steps to get into it. However the cover is difficult to get off as the mechanism to lift it was broken and not attached. If you have back problems this will be a challenge unless it's repaired. There are a lot of guide books(!) and info about places to visit, some include South Wales and further afield. Locally we enjoyed the Kite feeding station, Elan valley reservoirs, and a walk around Break your neck waterfall (yes, that's what its called!) There's also a nature reserve not far and Rhayader is pleasant to visit. The small community shop just 2 minutes down the road has lots of yummy cakes, reasonable prices logs, those bits and bobs you need and friendly staff.

The location of the cottage is great, as many of the places we visited were either a short drive away like Elan Valley, or just over an hour away like Aberdovey.

Also, a short drive away, we enjoyed a lovely meal at The Lamb & Flag pub. The cottage itself was disappointing and mainly due to the noise of the family using the property next door. It doesn't work as two rentals as essentially it's one property split into two rentals meaning it sounds like the other people are in your side of the property with only an internal door upstairs and downstairs, separating the property area. The main bedroom and landing were the worst, scaring my daughter, waking us up late at night or early in the morning, not helped by the fact the family next door were running up & down the stairs, jumping off the landing and shouting. In addition, Riverside Cottage has the back garden and the next property has the front garden. Riverside Cottage has a lovely garden, but the next door rentals kitchen looks out onto, so no privacy! Upon arriving, we were told to park our car in the small car park area, however the family staying next door, who arrived after us, parked both of their cars outside the two properties, blocking our exit & entrance to the property. So if you're looking for a relaxing week, I would only recommend Riverside Cottage if there is nobody using next door. The kitchen is on the small side but managable, but all of the cupboards are already used up with kitchenware, so for the week, we had to leave our food items in the bags we'd brought them in as there was nowhere to store them. It's also a shame that there is no washing machine. For a weeks stay as a family of 4, visiting places getting wet/muddy/sandy etc, clothes needed washing. I think this property is more a long weekend property and not meant for a weeks stay, especially for families.

Property was lovely and accommodated our large group really well.

Each room was spacious and we enjoyed the multiple large spaces both downstairs and in the dining area. Bedrooms were a good size and meant we could accommodate family groups in specific rooms, the annex or top floor which was also helpful. The hot tub had been prepared on arrival too, and whilst the weather wasn’t great, the hot tub was as nice to relax in…. Would have been better with some external lighting, and maybe a covered area for when it was raining? The annex was also a really good space for a family with small kids to retire to, when the rest anted to stop up later… Top floor rooms were a little cold compared to rest of house (top floor electric heaters on timers versus central heating elsewhere). Also, the range cooker was ok and double oven really helpful, but the electric hob took a while to heat up and so cooking a stir fry or large breakfasts / dinners for 16-18 was a challenge…. Lots of storage space for food, a good sized freezer complemented the two fridges and lots of plates and cutlery, exactly what was needed for a big family gathering, and hokey the dishwasher was also out to good use….. Outside the front access to walk the fields was overgrown, which limited our dog walking to the narrow road behind the house, which was slightly frustrating as we had two active / young dogs with us….. being able to access the field in front of the house for a country walk would have been good (despite the wet weather)…. Overall a very good stay, with a few minor improvements

The Searle is not really a cottage.

It is an apartment within a converted Pub. Had I known would not have booked it. extremely clean and modern decor. apart from the old disgusting dirty and stained bedroom curtains hanging off the rails. Also issues with lack of clothes wardrobe . The soot and water mix from leaking chimney stack staining the back wall of fire place. The kitchen had long term (see past reviews) breakages and missing cooking items. Self catering!!?? The outside in a state of neglect and dis-repair. Leaking hot tub . Owner switched it off. There is no garden. It is a concrete ‘yard’, with a trip hazard foot path from entrance gate. Secondary gate latch hanging off ….not pet safe. Render and crack damage around entrance door, walls and damp course level. Blocked (long term growing vegetation) rain guttering, creating a Niagara Falls onto path slabs . Sleep was impossible. Then I saw the Property for sale sign, since March 2024. I concluded this was a significant reason for Searle’s general dis-repair and the owners non- commitment to her property and her guests mental comfort. When sold it is somebody else’s problem. Three days in I had enough . left and returned home. Left comments in guest book , dated and signed . I text owner Sara Jay/Jane when home. To date I have not had a reply. I did not expect one . This standard is not what I expect from Sykes Cottages. Please see my account list of prev cottages and 10/10 reviews. Kind regards Michael Reid
