    About this property

Whether it be outdoor activities or a relaxing break away, this former post office, dating back to the 1960s, ensures the perfect location.
Set in the heart of Kielder village, The Old Post Office was the original post office set up in the living room in the 1960s. This well-located, semi-detached holiday property offers a comfortable base from which to explore this stunning part of the county. With a wood burner in the living room and a larger multi-fuel burner in the kitchen/dining room, the property provides a warm welcome at any time of the year. The pebbled rear garden is enclosed and makes an ideal setting for relaxing after a day out. Kielder is set in the Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, the largest in Europe and ideal for stargazers and photographers, with the Kielder Observatory just 3 miles away and a short walk to Kielder Castle and Water. The Old Post Office couldn’t be in a better location for couples, families and those looking to relax. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts too, there is cycling, walking, sailing and fishing available locally. Nearby Leaplish Waterside Park has a ferry that takes you around the water to admire the stunning scenery, and there is also a visitor centre, bird of prey centre and bar with picnic tables along the front, as well as a swimming pool and spa open to the public. Northumberland is reputedly the friendliest county in England and the charming villages spread throughout are waiting to be explored. Hadrian’s Wall or the Northumberland Heritage Coast, with Alnwick Castle only 50 miles away, make for a great day out. Watch out for the Kielder Winter Wonderland (booking essential), a fantastic experience for families during December and a perfect time for stargazing and soaking up the dark sky experience for all the family. "This is our 2nd stay at the Old Post Office and although the weather was against us we still had a lovely time. It's good for telescopes and astrophotography due to the dark skies, but I didn't get a chance this time with mine. The village is quiet and friendly, the cottage was clean, warm and cosy. There are plenty of walks, which we did in the rain, and the Angler's Arms is close by for food and drinks. This year we also went at the Boat House Inn Restaurant and the ambience was excellent as well as the food. I wold recommend this stay and will be going back again in the future."

"Beautiful house in a beautiful setting. We were concerned when we arrived the kids may be bored, but with the Calvert Trust just down the road we needn’t have been worried as they provide a huge selection of activities for kids to do and the Old Post Office had everything we needed for cosy nights in after a long days sightseeing, walking and doing the activities. The kids declared it has been their favourite holiday and their favourite cottage they’d stayed in. They are quite difficult to please, so you can’t get better than a thumbs up from them! It was cloudy the week we visited so was disappointed to not have been lucky enough to see the dark skies, so will be making a return visit for this and would happily stay here again. Thank you!"

"A great cottage, (with everything you could need from high chair to dog bowl), to base yourself to enjoy all Kielder had to offer. Very well located just a few minutes’ drive from Kielder Water riverside (walks, pleasure boats, swimming pool, crazy golf, family friendly pub, etc), Calvert trust (high ropes, archery) and the observatory. The Anglers arms with classic pub meals is easy walking distance, as is Kielder castle with walks and a cafe."

"Great house in a perfect location. House was clean and had everything we needed for our stay. Of course the amenities are not going to be amazing given it is in the middle of Kielder forest so we were not expecting to have a supermarket on our doorstep so it was fine. We were working on a research project in Kielder Forest so it was such an amazing location and perfect for what we needed. Everyone in the area was very welcoming and friendly including the owners. Would stay again and recommend."

"It was immediately apparent when we walked into the building that it was not cared for.I have attached some photos to show the state of the place. Most of the double glazed windows were blown. Moisture in between the sealed panes.Cob webs in most corners of the rooms.Black mould growing on the bathroom window.Wall paper joints opening up and some parts hanging down.It appears that a leak had occurred in the roof space in one of the bedrooms and not correctly dealt with. When lifting the cushions of the sofa there were lots of crumbs/rubbish etc. obviously they have not been cleaned in a long time. The cooker socket was loose on the wall and filthy. The whole place was not of a clean standard."

"Lovely cottage, spacious, clean and well-equipped. Cosy and warm once you get the hang of keeping the fire going. Great walks and cycling from the front door, suitable for all levels of fitness and enthusiasm. The local pub, The Angler's Arms, is friendly and good value - good beer and simple food. The café at Kielder Castle also good for lunches and teas. Convenient location for Kielder Observatory. Take all the food and drink you think you will need as the village shop doesn't have much, they ran out of milk while we were there. We were unlucky with the weather - we had heavy rain and some snow but we enjoyed our stay at The Old Post Office anyway. This is our second visit to Kielder and we still haven't spotted a red squirrel. Maybe next year!"
