What our customers say about their holidays

      The cottage was very clean.

Furnishings and decor were modern and well kept. The welcome gifts were thoughtful and appreciated. Unfortunately though, we felt that the outside picture and description are misleading as it appears the cottage is completely detached. It isn't as it's joined to a row of garages, each with their own parking. Vehicles came and went. As we had specifically looked for a detached property, and thought that 'courtyard' meant space around it, this was disappointing. Although we had no noise from the garages, we unfortunately did from the surroundings. This included the neighbour opposite who worked unsocial hours. We were woken most mornings between 0600 and 0630 and also disturbed after 2330. Of course, it's his job but, as his van was so close to the property (and noise echoed around the courtyard) the slamming of doors and engine start up was not what we wanted for our break. Another van also came and went, parked just next to the property as it was involved in building work opposite. The shower room was beautifully clean and modern, however the hot flow in the shower and sink were very poor. We mentioned this to the owner who said he would get his son to look at it but we heard no more. If he did look at it, it made no difference. The lack of information in the property was surprising. There was no greeting or information about how things worked. Not everyone would know to look under the router to find the WiFi code, for example. The same applied to the electric heaters. Never having used them before, they took some fiddling to get right. There was information about the cooker and microwave in a kitchen drawer but also for a microwave that wasn't there? There were some leaflets in a rack but some were out of date: a 2017 bus timetable for example. Had it really been there for nearly 3 years? We loved Marske: it has everything you need for a holiday including a friendly pub, The Ship, and some excellent restaurant choices. Everyone we met in the area's restaurants, shops and attractions was friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The surrounding area and beach are lovely. Unfortunately, as beautiful as the property is inside, it wouldn't be for us again.

No-one met us at the cottage on arrival.

I had the briefest of conversations with the owner on the phone before we went and was just told that the cottage would be open and the keys would be on the table. That was it. No instruction book re. the various facilities e.g. heating system - we only discovered on the last day that the place had underfloor heating! We had no idea. This didn't matter as the electric panel heaters were very efficient and it wasn't a cold week. But some instructions on this would have helped. I presume that the 'owner' is the chap who owned/worked at the hairdressing salon opposite but he didn't make that clear at the beginning of the week. He was the one who, much later in the week, by chance met us, asked if everything was OK and told us incidentally about the underfloor heating! It's just an issue of a little bit more printed information is needed along with meeting and greeting guests. The place itself was great - 100% clean, well-equipped, quiet, convenient, warm, good kitchen facilities etc. so no complaints at all on that score. Excellent television with Sky if you should want that. We also had access to a garage where we could safely store our bikes. The double bed was a bit 'soft' for my liking. Maybe a new mattress should be considered. Other than would recommend both Sykes Cottages generally and this cottage in particular. A fascinating area, full of history. Some simply beautiful scenery juxtaposed with some post-industrial ugliness! We had an excellent week. Thank you.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The cottage was better than expected and well maintained. All the personalised decorations demonstrated how well taken care of the cottage is. We really appreciated the bottle of wine left for us and our dog enjoyed sun bathing on the dog bed in the garden. The kitchen had everything you could need and we were left with plenty of towels and dishcloths. Redcar was a great spot for our break. The cottage was a short 5 minute walk from the beach which was beautiful but for being so close, the street was still really quiet. We also had day trips to Scarborough (1hr 15mins) and Whitby (45mins away) which the cottage was well placed for. We highly recommend this cottage and would stay again.

Fantastic cottage with plenty equipment and goods to meet all your needs. Lots of quirky interior design features that were very interesting. Welcome pack and bottle of wine was a lovely gesture on arrival. Situated on the edge of Redcar which is sadly in need of some local regeneration ( like most towns) however beautiful beaches on your doorstep, dog friendly. Excellent for trips to Saltburn, Kettleness for fossils , Staithes and Whitby. Hartlepool royal navy museum and marina is a short drive. Nearby villages of Yarm ,Guisborough and Stokesly for markets all available. Main town of Middlesbrough just down the road for shopping. All in all a lovely cottage, close to lots of things to do at every level.

Had a lovely stay at Little Nest Cottage.

It was exactly as described in the listing - a little cottage in town centre location, well furnished and a comfortable base for exploring North Yorkshire. The cottage had everything we needed and a nice welcome pack of coffee/ teas and treats when we arrived. While the cottage does allow dogs, which was great given that we were travelling with ours, there isn’t a garden or a nearby space for them to use (the front door opens directly into the communal car park) We were aware of this before our visit so it wasn’t too much of a problem, so just something for future guests to be aware of too. Overall, I would say the cottage was very good value for money and we had a very pleasant stay. Thank you!
