Richmond, North Yorkshire, is often referred to as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales - and it's not hard to see why. Over the years, it's inspired many painters, poets and authors and hundreds of holidaymakers have found a place in their heart for the historic market town of Richmond too.

Richmond holiday cottages really are something special. Think 18th century houses, Georgian townhouses perched on the cobbled market square and grade II listed stone built properties. What our customers say about their holidays

    • Julie - Verified booking

Nice cottage but not worthy of 5 stars as there were a few issues with the cottage.

      1. No welcome pack, not even a packet of biscuits, milk etc. The first time in over 25 years of staying in holiday cottages that I have not had a welcome pack. 2. No information on where the rubbish bins were and what day the bins were emptied. 3. No information on where the log store was. Checked with a neighbour who showed me where the log store was but this was padlocked and no key was available in the cottage so we had to buy our own fire lighters, kindling and logs as there was only a small basket of logs available in the cottage, an expense we had not catered for. Your description clearly states all fuel for the stove is included in the rent, this is not the case. 4. One of the storage heaters in the living room did not work so it was chilly in the evenings if the fire wasn’t used. 5. Not one empty kitchen cupboard available for us to use so had to pile all our dry goods on the kitchen windowsill. 6. No storage in the bedroom as the wardrobe drawer, the wardrobe itself and under the bed was crammed full of bedding and towels. Again we had to pile jumpers on the windowsill as there were only tiny drawers available to use in the bedside cabinets and the chest of drawers. 7. No where available to store our two suitcases so we had to scrabble about under the bed (which was filthy) trying to move everything around so we could at least get one case under there. We then had to keep moving the other case around the bedroom as the bedroom is small. 8. I was informed by the owner that there was no hairdryer or iron - a 5 star property without the basics? 9. The patio area was ankle deep in leaves and clearly had not been swept in weeks. The patio furniture was also dirty and I had to wipe all this down and get rid of all the leaves before we could use anything outside. Surely the cleaners should sweep the patio and wipe the furniture down? 10. The settee in the living room was very low and there was a metal bar that stuck in you when you sat down. I know it was a bed settee but surely it would be better to buy a quality settee for a 5 star property. We enjoyed our week but the above issues did take the edge off the cottage. As I say definitely not worthy of 5 stars, we have stayed in far better properties that you have given 3 and 4 stars for.

This is constructive feedback only for the property owner: It doesn't work to have a thermostat above a storage heater!

We had to turn the thermostat up to about 25 degrees to make the central heating come on It would be a good idea to have an extractor fan in the bathroom as it's getting damp in there It would have been useful to know that there is no signal to be able to phone or text Please leave guidance about the bins, as to when you put them out! I have just had a farcical dance with them this morning, not realising that your green and black bins are both collected weekly, and Sue didn't make it very clear, so I am afraid I didn't get the recycling out and only just made the black bin emptying Feedback that can be published: We had a comfy week in possibly the most peaceful place we have ever stayed. We loved the open fire and got used to there being no TV quickly, enjoying the quiet. There were plentiful puzzles, games and books to amuse. It was very handy to have the CB Inn a 5 minute stroll down the road and they were welcoming to dogs in the bar area. We enjoyed just a drink and also a roast dinner. Reeth is a nice little town with dog friendly pubs. Richmond or Barnard Castle seem to be the nearest places to fill up with petrol, so beware of getting too low on fuel!

We have very mixed feelings about Aros.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in a magnificent, peaceful location surrounded by sheep, rabbits, lapwings, birds galore and wonderful flora. Walks abound in the area, straight from the door plus a very welcoming inn, The C B 5 minutes walk away serving superb food. We appreciate the cottage was built some years ago and requires a lot of maintenance but it could do with some tlc eg new bathroom with extractor fan as it is damp, decorating throughout as wallpaper is peeling. I am always suspicious of cottages that contain air fresheners…….why does it need one? Possibly to conceal the damp smell or visiting dogs? We knew before booking that dogs were allowed but their presence was obvious by the fur on floors and kitchen cupboard doors. I tried to clean this up but unfortunately the Vax cleaner was useless. Sadly we did not find the sofa comfortable and the armchairs were too low. The kitchen appears to be fairly new and is extremely well equipped. There is an impressive selection of maps, books, games and jigsaws to while away any spare time if needed and the WiFi was welcomed for accessing weather forecasts in the absence of a tv. We did not miss the tv at all.

We absolutely loved our stay here and would definitely stay again.

The property is quite remote but not too isolated. We really liked that there was a collection of houses around us and it was only a short drive into Reeth for supplies. The cottage has everything you need as a home away from home, apart from a TV - but we loved that! Instead we spent our evenings playing games (of which there were plenty provided) and reading in front of the real fire. Although if you're desperate for technology there is a good WiFi connection. Our puppy enjoyed her stay too and spent time rummaging around on the grass area at the front of the property.

This cottage was in a gorgeous little hamlet next to an old pub, handy for walkers and cyclists.

Gets full on darts night. The cottage was very cosy and the log burner was lovely and warming. Kitchen was so well equipped with modern appliances. We cooked most nights. The bed was very comfortable and warm, only downside was the bathroom was a bit cold in mid winter, but the shower was great. The Christmas tree was a nice thought . Good pubs in Reeth, and The Tan Hill Inn was a Good place to walk from especially in the snow.
