We were very disappointed with the property overall.

The location by the sea is lovely, but it needs to be clearer how remote it is. Views are amazing and it’s a peaceful relaxing setting. All the beds were very comfortable. However, this is where the positive points finish! There was no welcome pack - not even any toilet roll, which felt rather mean. Plus, on a freezing cold day the heating was switched off. The property was not very clean when we arrived (and by the way, the door was unlocked with the keys in the lock!!) It appeared superficially clean, but skirting boards were thick with dust; cobwebs in bathroom and bedroom; washbasin in ground floor bathroom was stained; toilets not clean; insides of kitchen cupboards sticky and marked with water rings. Generally, it felt grimy. Furniture was very tired -leather sofas and chairs were cracked. Dining room table and chairs looked to be around 20 years old - very faded. The bedding and towels seemed cheap and tired (some towels faded). The shower hose in the ground floor shower room has obviously been replaced and didn’t fit the holder, so it was impossible to have a shower as you needed to hold it! The grouting in both bathrooms was patchy and needs redoing. The bath in the upstairs bathroom is high and not easy to climb into. The lounge is okay, but lighting is not good. Too bright with 12 ceiling lights but only 1 lamp so too dim with just that. There is a wall-light but you need to stand on the sofa to switch it on! I didn’t like the personal photos on display - it felt creepy:( The rug was filthy and stained. There were no coasters for cups. Some cutlery and crockery that had been out away was dirty. Fridge wasn’t very clean. Several plates and dishes were chipped. There was no heating in the conservatory so we couldn’t use it and the roof leaked - this has been reported on for at least 7 years! (According to visitors book). The lock on back door is almost impossible. The outside seating is dirty and rusty. The back garden was littered with garden furniture that’s obviously been blown around. The front gate cannot be closed so the front garden can’t be made secure. Overall - it felt as if nobody cared about this property. It has a neglected feel to it. We believe it could be fabulous and probably was lovely 20 years ago but is now definitely past its sell by date. Sykes as a company ought to check standards - this property was given4 ticks - no was does it deserve even 2. We therefore will not be using Sykes for our future holidays and will not be recommending this company to anyone.

We stayed in the beautiful Bwthyn Awel cottage in January 2022.

The location, in Church Bay is lovely and peaceful with the Lobster Pot restaurant just a short walk from the cottage and a little further on is the beach. The house and facilities are as shown and detailed on the Sykes website but feels much homier than pictures can convey. It is modern looking inside and out with lots of lovely and thoughtful finishing touches. Bedding was charming and the beds very comfortable (which I was happily surprised to find!). There is a 1st floor balcony with decking which will be a lovely place to relax, sip a drink, read, admire the view… in the warmer months. Speaking of temperature, it was cold outside when we were staying there but we never felt a draft in the cottage, the water was hot and the temperature was cosy without being too warm. We had Wifi, Netflix and TV channels which we enjoyed from the comfy sofas in the first floor sitting room. Oh yes, and in the beautiful kitchen/eating area with the picturesque view there is a Nespresso machine so don’t forget to pack some pods – or pop to Holyhead shops (a short drive away) to stock up on essentials. Holyhead also has some nice shops, cafés and pubs. If you want to eat out nearer to your new home from home – the the Lobster Pot restaurant is open throughout and I have to say the food there was delicious! Lots of seafood as you would expect but other carnivore and vegetarian options available too. We also saw a nearby café, but understand that is only open “in season”. Overall, from our experience, it exceeded our expectations (as did the area) and the new owner couldn’t have been more helpful re the very few queries we had. We will definitely be booking another stay in Bwthyn Awel later in the year.

Stayed with my son and dog in early June 23.

Great comfy beds and good showers. Could do with some sharp knives, kitchen foil and pegs. Also it would have been nice to have had a welcome pack, even if this was just some milk for a cuppa after a long drive. Had to buy loo roll and washing up liquid. Also I appreciate that there are no on site recycling facilities due to there being a private refuse contractor, but it would be really useful to provide information on the nearest bottle banks / recycling site. It felt horrible to put plastics and cardboard in the general rubbish and we brought out bottles back with with us. I chose this property as it was advertised as having an enclosed garden for the dog. I knew the garden was to be shared with the adjoining house but I don't think the people staying there were expecting us to be using it and were a bit taken back when we did. Reading the visitor information folder in the cottage it did state that use of the enclosed garden was for those staying in the house and not us. Luckily the people there were lovely and didn't seem to mind and thankfully the dogs got on. However it felt really uncomfortable being in there walking in front of their windows and open doors while waiting for my dog to poo. I didn't feel that I could just open the door in the morning or last thing at night to leave him wandering about on his own in case I missed picking up after him. So not as relaxing as it could have been. I loved the location hidden away, I love Anglesey and we had the most fantastic weather. I didn't intend for this to be an extended moan, we really did have have a good week. I hope that this will be taken in the constructive spirit in which it was meant. Thank you.

Beds very comfy On arrival not the cleanest- kitchen bin not emptied, surfaces dusty and cobwebs everywhere, also windows dirty.

Broken under stairs cupboard door, with note saying sorry broken do not use, and the hoover used to stop it falling. This was a concern for us as we have 3 children that could have been injured by it falling. Garden not in any way enclosed- this needs removing from listing immediately as totally misleading. Treehouse tired and needs maintenance for safety. Access to beach great but the track is used by some cars like a rally track. If the property is been rented as separate units the adjoining door needs addressing as a matter of urgency- the internal door is totally inadequate for both security and sound insulation (there was a big party of adults our 1st weekend followed by a large family group and we could hear everything). Kitchen on the whole well equipped but only 1 small oven tray for cooking meant we had to eat in shifts, and no grill pan. Downstairs shower room was handy but again needs maintenance - shower tray cracked and the water slow to drain- we removed handfuls of hair and muck from shower trap to help slightly. Great to have a washing machine but having a shared washing line and only 12 shared pegs isn’t really sufficient. Lovely to have outdoor table and chairs available but as garden wasn’t enclosed and as the garden we had access to had no evening sun we didn’t use. Owner’s personal pictures in the living area shouldn’t really be there- have never ever come across this in a holiday home before. Overall had a nice stay, loved the island, the views and slept amazingly, we were also very lucky with the weather. We just felt that the cottage is a little tired and in need of some TLC .

We’re so glad we came back to “Breeze Cottage” for another family holiday two years after our first experience of Church Bay … the sun shone for most of our week there, and we took the ten minute walk to the beach every day!

Our swimmers and paddle-boarders enjoyed the safe water, and the local walks are many and varied. Location is everything, and the views over to Holyhead harbour full of interest, though we were glad that cruise liner passengers head elsewhere! We ate on the patio every evening, and the under-tens enjoyed playing in the garden, which thankfully is grass rather than lawn, and with no plants to damage. The garden gate to next door’s garden enabled occasional play with the youngsters in the adjoining holiday-let cottage. When we tired of cooking for ourselves (and there’s plenty of kit, so it’s easy to self-cater) Church Bay offers an excellent restaurant (The Lobster Pot) and the Wavecrest Café, both of which we sampled with pleasure. Just be aware that it’s safest to pre-book at the former, though you can always get a drink at their bar, and that the latter’s lovely strawberries and cream scones are only available Thursdays to Sundays. Some (mostly external) aspects of the cottage would benefit from maintenance, but the facilities all work well, with lots of hot water – having three bathrooms helps when you’re accommodating three family groups. The nowadays-essential Wi-Fi was fast enough to support all our many devices. The TV system needs some care to navigate, but we were able to enjoy watching the Olympic Games, even though our own swimming skills wouldn’t have taken us to Paris! When our next family holiday heads to Anglesey, Bwthyn Awel will be on the short list.
