What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mark - Verified booking

An excellent choice for an escape to the south Devon coast.

St Julien does exactly what it says on the listing and the views of the sea from the open plan living space really is quite wow. As a low-level train enthusiast, hearing them rumble away quietly in the distance making their way towards Exeter or further west was a treat! The apartment was clean and welcoming, as was Maggie the owner downstairs who was on hand with a text if necessary but who allowed us to enjoy our time in her space. Situated within a 5 minute walk from a Premier, a short drive from a Sainsburys or a 12-15 minute walk from black swan haven of Dawlish town centre and its train station, St Julien was also located right alongside a bus stop, where the No.2 Stagecoach could take you towards Newton Abbot or up to Exeter for just £2 each one-way. So my wife and I ended us using the buses and trains all week to explore the south coast and left the car in the neat and comfy parking bay outside the entrance. Everything in the apartment worked easily - a good shower, an easy to use Smart TV and a basic but fully operable kitchenette that did the job. Excellent and most certainly recommended for couples or solo travellers looking for a comfy, welcoming, well connected base from which to explore Devon and beyond. A big Welsh 'Diolch' to Maggie for her hospitality and warm welcome.

This apartment is incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Despite it being on a busy road and with the train track in front it really was not noisy. Great location as you are just outside of the main town but it’s a few minutes walk and you are in the heart of it. I don’t drive so it was an ideal location you can hop straight on the train. The bus stops are literally just outside also. The contact I had with Maggie was great, just the right amount to let me know if I had a problem I could reach out and she’d help but not at all intrusive. Finally I have to mention the most important thing…..the view! I happily sat for hours staring out to sea it was incredibly relaxing. When I first went into the apartment I wasn’t sure about the scope being there but it turns out it’s great fun and also quite relaxing, who knew! I would happily stay here again it was amazing the only thing to bear in mind is most places in Dawlish seemed to close at 4pm but you get the hang of the slower pace of life quite quickly.

The property itself was lovely, the location stunning and the hosts were great.

However there were many problems with the cottage. The bed was extremely uncomfortable with no support in the middle. I had to roll up the spare quilt and put it under the mattress to stop ourselves rolling into the middle. There was no shower and not enough hot water for a decent bath. The floorboards in the bedroom, landing and stairs creaked loudly so that if one of us got up it always woke the other. The 2 single beds were damp, the walls mouldy and the wardrobe unusable because of the damp smell. The sofas were sooo uncomfortable . The kitchen not really fit for purpose ie, limited cupboard space, cooker had such low pressure it took an age to cook anything. The conservatory leaked. No view of the garden or countryside from the outside space. In general the cottage was tired and in need of updating. Not a place I will be going back to.

Robin cottage was clean and tidy and we knew that it was small so that was not a problem.

But unfortunately it wasn't clear to me that it did not have any garden at all. I had read that it had a shared courtyard with furniture which I expected to be joined to the property. As it was the courtyard was along the road from us. Stepping out through our front door you were on the road itself, and we found it quite awkward for our dog especially in the middle of the night if he needed a wee. I think there were only two cottages without enclosed outside space and I feel that this should be made clear when booking as unsuitable for dogs. Lastly the walk to the pub and shop was pretty difficult as the only way to go was so overgrown. The pub was worth it once you made it there though and the food was lovely.

Linhay is a beautifully converted building - I particulary loved the mezzanine bedroom.

Very comfortable, well-equipped and lovingly maintained. The view from the main bedroom is just beautiful, and we loved the remote location and the great local village and community shop. The sunny conservatory and private yard was very attractive. The host, Margaret Weeks, was friendly, helpful and welcoming and close on hand if any problem were to arise ( we had none!). The location might be a bit of a challenge for nervous drivers - quite steep hills, narrow bridges and high-hedged lanes are the norm in this vicinity - we just loved the relatively remoteness. Wonderful immediate access to the moor - literally outside the entrance gate.
