What our customers say about their holidays

    • Kathy Steele - Verified booking

Lovely and pretty cottage in such a beautiful setting. I was so pleased to return for my second stay and bring my friend this time. Although advertised for 4, it probably suits either 2 or 3 people more comfortably. The kitchen, although small, is so well equipped which was important to us as we like to cook in the evening. The access to a washing machine and tumble dryer is so welcome too. The additional beach towels were welcome too, (although towels for bathing on small side). Sitting outside in the back in the afternoon sunshine is a delight and with warmer weather, I know we would have made use of the bbq. The cottage isn't without its quirks though - an oven which takes ages to warm up; tv and dvd system that takes a bit of getting used to, single beds that didn't accommodate my 6ft 2 husband very well (no way would we have comfortably slept together in the double bed), a picnic table with top on a slant, and sofas that are really uncomfortable and seemed to set off my friend's back problems. But as you will see, I have given it 4 stars as there's such a sense of peace in the cottage. My heart leapt each morning when I came through and saw the view from the lounge window! The location is just stunning and the coastal walking paths breath taking. A wonderful selection of pubs in nearby Kipford and lovely tea room with garden and great views a few steps from the cottage. Such a very special and memorable week.

Charming little period cottage owned and recently renovated by NTS (free entry to beautiful Threave Gardens).

Great location for Rockcliffe, nicely set back from the popular beach, with its own private parking next to the cottage. Two small bedrooms upstairs are bright and cosy. Mattresses and pillows could use covers as another reviewer pointed out six months ago. Small bathroom downstairs (steep staircase) with good shower, separate bathtub, toilet, heated towel rail and one tiny sink. Sitting room downstairs is a bit pokey. Well-equipped kitchen has more light and brand new good quality appliances. Oil-fired central heating throughout on a timer. There's an open lawn in front with partial views of coast and a small front patio with a wooden picnic table, four wooden chairs and a large parasol for those Scottish al fresco meals. There's nothing in the way of shops or tearooms in Rockcliffe, just a Mr Whippy van during the day, but there's a Londis convenience shop in nearby Colvend. A delightful 30-minute walk through NTS woods takes you to the little seaside resort of Kippford with a tearoom, pub and yachting club. A beautiful path going the other direction hugs the coast and takes you to a stunning viewpoint in half a mile and continues for another four miles to the sandy beaches of Sandyhills (a bus connects the two villages).

Third visit to this house and reserved again for the same November period next year. The house is nicely located in a quiet area but with sea views. It has all the necessary facilities and has a good heating system which is good for the winter period. Beds are comfy with decent linen and new towels throughout. The house is not “posh” but comfortable , spacious and homely. There 2 of of plus a small dog but with space for few more guests. This part of Scotland is gorgeous but seemingly largely overlooked by tourists, ( we have been in the summer and it was not overly busy then) in in truth a lot of the touristy things are closed in winter but we don’t mind it that way. Cleve House and Gardens (National Trust) is a must as is another NT property Broughton House in Kirkcudbright which is quirky but interesting There are splendid walks from the house but you do to use a car as supermarkets and shops are within a reasonable driving commute

The cottage, it's location and grounds are lovely and some of the facilities (kitchen/diner and bathroom; except for ridiculously small sink) are good, but it is badly let down by the contents - or rather the lack of them.

No spare bedding or blankets (or cot); nothing between the sheet and the very cheap mattress through which you could feel the springs and is unhygienic; no hair-dryer; no ordnance survey/walking maps; no suitable drying area or muddy shoe/boot racks. Kitchen poorly supplied: we have never stayed in any self-catering accommodation that did not supply even a few basics - salt, pepper, cooking/olive oil, no hand-wash in the cottage and no welcome supplies. A dishwasher but no salt or rinse aid, even in the machine. The grounds should have been mown and cleared on change-over day between 10am and 5pm, not spoiling our peace on a lovely sunny Tuesday afternoon (and making my hayfever flare up!). Despite all this we enjoyed our week in Rockcliffe with its wonderful walking, but would recommend that anyone visiting should take as many provisions as they can fit in their car - assuming that you are not travelling from abroad!

This is a really nice property in a magnificent location. Sufficiently so that we have already booked for the winter The house was very clean with good beds, bed linen and towels. The decor and furnishings were also clean and functional. The bunks in the smaller bedroom we’re unused and would I suggest might have been a challenge for my “more mature “ self but kids would love them. The house is on one level and spacious.. Every thing we need was provided The driveway was adequate for one car but there appeared to be masses of street parking outside. The rear garden is secure , mature and pet friendly, there are though steps to reach it. We had a minor issue with a missing garage key on arrival but I spoke to the owner Mr Hitchens who was extremely apologetic and we coped without access for the week. Strongly recommend this property in a wonderful and maybe overlooked part of Scotland
