What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lauren - Verified booking

The property is nicely decorated and in a peaceful location with plenty of good walks locally.

The woods that are meant to be accessible from the door were not suitable for walking due to forestry work blocking the route. Unfortunately the bed was very uncomfortable, far too soft and the pillows far too big. The bed is a double with a foot board and as such my partner (6'3") couldn't sleep in it. After a night of repeatedly hitting his head and feet, over the next few nights he ended up trying to sleep on the sofa, pull out bed and floor. I ended up having to buy a pillow. He also couldn't fit under the shower at its maximum height. Although I appreciate he is tall, he isn't exceptionally so and I would strongly suggest the owners consider changing the bed. The listing also needs updating to reflect the fact there is no bath. There are another two properties next door and no enclosed area to let dogs out. Due to an error on my part we arrived a day early. When I spoke to the owner he was abrupt and unhelpful. Thankfully, the current residents were very kind to us and all the local B&Bs I called were very keen to help and eventually we found somewhere to stay for the extra night. Although this was my fault, a little warmth from the owner wouldn't have gone amiss. The next day, the female owner offered to prepare the property early and we gained access about an hour early although she did make a point of telling us she was sweating as a result of her efforts. Will definitely not return.

Charming little period cottage owned and recently renovated by NTS (free entry to beautiful Threave Gardens).

Great location for Rockcliffe, nicely set back from the popular beach, with its own private parking next to the cottage. Two small bedrooms upstairs are bright and cosy. Mattresses and pillows could use covers as another reviewer pointed out six months ago. Small bathroom downstairs (steep staircase) with good shower, separate bathtub, toilet, heated towel rail and one tiny sink. Sitting room downstairs is a bit pokey. Well-equipped kitchen has more light and brand new good quality appliances. Oil-fired central heating throughout on a timer. There's an open lawn in front with partial views of coast and a small front patio with a wooden picnic table, four wooden chairs and a large parasol for those Scottish al fresco meals. There's nothing in the way of shops or tearooms in Rockcliffe, just a Mr Whippy van during the day, but there's a Londis convenience shop in nearby Colvend. A delightful 30-minute walk through NTS woods takes you to the little seaside resort of Kippford with a tearoom, pub and yachting club. A beautiful path going the other direction hugs the coast and takes you to a stunning viewpoint in half a mile and continues for another four miles to the sandy beaches of Sandyhills (a bus connects the two villages).

The Barn is down a track which I think would've been tricky in snow/ice - just something to think about for winter visitors!

No problem in a 4x4 though. The owners talked a lot about cleanliness due to the coronavirus, and although it was clean, it could definitely have been cleaner. I think a dishwasher would be a good investment, particularly now we're in the post-Covid era! Also the bedding was a bit synthetic and hot, and the bath was teeny tiny. And we could defo tell that the place is dog-friendly as there were a fair few hairs/doggy smells around! And the 'basket of firewood' contained a lot of totally unburnable twigs and an old drawer, complete with metal brackets!! Defo bring your own logs if you're hoping to get the woodburner going on your first night. BUT there was lots of good stuff too - particularly the red squirrels - we bought food from the Spar down the road, and after a couple of days, hey presto, there were Ginger and Blondie, regularly visiting. It was heavenly. We also saw a woodpecker doing his/her thing in the trees outside. And it really is lovely and peaceful.

Third visit to this house and reserved again for the same November period next year. The house is nicely located in a quiet area but with sea views. It has all the necessary facilities and has a good heating system which is good for the winter period. Beds are comfy with decent linen and new towels throughout. The house is not “posh” but comfortable , spacious and homely. There 2 of of plus a small dog but with space for few more guests. This part of Scotland is gorgeous but seemingly largely overlooked by tourists, ( we have been in the summer and it was not overly busy then) in in truth a lot of the touristy things are closed in winter but we don’t mind it that way. Cleve House and Gardens (National Trust) is a must as is another NT property Broughton House in Kirkcudbright which is quirky but interesting There are splendid walks from the house but you do to use a car as supermarkets and shops are within a reasonable driving commute

The cottage, it's location and grounds are lovely and some of the facilities (kitchen/diner and bathroom; except for ridiculously small sink) are good, but it is badly let down by the contents - or rather the lack of them.

No spare bedding or blankets (or cot); nothing between the sheet and the very cheap mattress through which you could feel the springs and is unhygienic; no hair-dryer; no ordnance survey/walking maps; no suitable drying area or muddy shoe/boot racks. Kitchen poorly supplied: we have never stayed in any self-catering accommodation that did not supply even a few basics - salt, pepper, cooking/olive oil, no hand-wash in the cottage and no welcome supplies. A dishwasher but no salt or rinse aid, even in the machine. The grounds should have been mown and cleared on change-over day between 10am and 5pm, not spoiling our peace on a lovely sunny Tuesday afternoon (and making my hayfever flare up!). Despite all this we enjoyed our week in Rockcliffe with its wonderful walking, but would recommend that anyone visiting should take as many provisions as they can fit in their car - assuming that you are not travelling from abroad!
