"This cottage is rated as a 4 star property i.e. "excellent standard throughout". We thought the standard was inadequate, and that the property is in need of some basic investment. We have stayed at numerous cottages, and this has been easily the most disappointing. On the plus side, the cottage had plenty of space for our party of seven (3 children, 2 parents, and 2 grandparents). The lounge was spacious and comfortable with a good tv and dvd player. The description of Hope Cove and the property's proximity to its attractions is accurate. However the flattering external publicity photo of the property does not reveal that the space in front of the property is a busy crowded public car park during the day.On arriving at the property we were assailed by a strong smell which we thought was damp. Ventilation made the smell become less of an issue upstairs as the week went on, but those sleeping downstairs (all but the grandparents) said the smell penetrated bedding etc. making bedtime less than pleasant throughout the holiday. We were surprised to find no soap on arrival. We have been used to a warm welcome at the other cottages we have stayed at, with provision for bathroom and kitchen consumables to last the stay. Very often there has been a welcome pack of tea and coffee and even cakes. Not at S19312. Washing up liquid was supplied plus one dishwasher tablet, one bin liner and one tea towel. But no soap! The electric shower in the upstairs bathroom was unusable as the temperature control lever was jammed at the maximum heat position, and the water was scalding hot. The hot water cylinder also had no thermostatic control. The downstairs bathroom shower worked from taps so was usable by our party of seven. The capacious fridge/freezer, the dishwasher and washing machine were all modern and efficient. The cooker, however looked at least as old as the house (about 30 years we understand) and did not properly fit in its housing. We gave up on the timer and used our wristwatches instead. Most importantly, my daughter felt that the design of the cooker was dangerous to young children as the oven door handle became very hot where the fan oven extraction vents expelled heat onto the handle. The dining table illustrated in the publicity looks attractive. Unfortunately the owners covered it with a rather grubby looking plastic table cloth, which is presumably wiped down between tenancies. We are used to a clean cotton table cloth at our other holiday properties. If the owner is worried about damage to the table through spills, the cotton could be placed over the plastic table cloth.More than one of the double glazed windows suffered from internal condensation, and there was a split in the plastic covering of one of the settees (which were comfortable). "Excellent standard throughout?" I don't think so.I contacted the caretaker, Karen, who seemed pleasant. She thought the absence of soap on arrival was normal, as there was a shop a few minutes walk away. She felt the same about the minimal provision of other kitchen and bathroom consumables mentioned, although she did later provide dishwasher tablets, bin liners, and a supply of tea towels. She promised to arrange for a plumber/electrician to attend to the scalding shower who presumably told her that the problem was fixed. It wasn't, and we never had a shower from this unit. Karen thought that we were expecting too much of a 1980's built house (as if thermostats were not known of back then!) Later she told us the electrician had said the electric shower was not repairable and needed replacement. As regards the damp smell she offered no solution. There is nothing in my comments that cannot be rectified by investment, and a less miserly welcome attitude to guests. We had a good family holiday at Hope Cove but would consider returning to this property only if the problems were eliminated."

"I booked this property a couple of weeks before our stay in August 2016. Booking at short notice meant there was limited choice available but Pirate's Cove ticked the boxes of being near beaches and pubs. The property itself is spacious and arranged with bedrooms on the ground floor and living area above. It was comfortable enough but not luxurious but that was fine as we were out most of the time. There were three bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin, 1 single) so to sleep 7 two people have to use the sofabed in the lounge (this was pretty good as a bed). The kitchen was ok and my mother-in-law managed to cook a Sunday roast so ok for most requirements. The bathroom was large but pretty tired and only having one toilet was not ideal for a party of seven. The lounge had a decent television and DVD player. The TV could accept USB sticks to play videos too. There was no Internet available so we used the free wifi at the nearby pub when we needed to go on-line. There was no mobile signal either although five minutes walk up a hill resolved this. There is a balcony at the rear of the property which adds useful space but has no view and had not been swept for some time. The exterior of the property could have done with a good clean. The interior was however well cleaned before our arrival. The front of the property looks out onto a car park. If you crane your neck you can just see the sea. However, once outside the property you get good views within seconds.Electricity is not included is the rental price. You have to read the meter in the box on the front exterior wall on arrival and again on departure and perform some calculations then leave the money (cash or cheque) in the property. Our cost for a week in Summer was approx £13 so not outrageous but a pain to read the meter and work out the cost. I really think that electricity should be included in the rental price. Finally the parking was a bit hit and miss. There was an area reserved for the five cottages which could accommodate five cars. There was also space for a vehicle in front of each cottage. However we were never able to park two cars there as the spaces were occupied. I am not sure whether some guests had more than two cars per cottage or whether non-residents were using the spaces. I would be useful to have a designated space for each cottage in the parking area to avoid this."

"We had a wonderful stay at St Michael and All Angels. The property is lovely - beautifully finished to a really high standard and in a style that is fitting for a converted church. There were cosy touches everywhere, like warm snugs by the back door for a cool evening, plenty of logs for the fire, candlelight and wine in the fridge on arrival! The owner was extremely thoughtful in showing us around when we first arrived, and left a brilliant welcome hamper which we enjoyed during our stay. We stayed with 2 young children (4 and 6), and the whole family found our break really relaxing. The garden had plenty of enclosed space for the children to run around in, and indoors there is ample room for the whole family to relax together or have their own space. From a practical point of view, St Michael and All Angels has everything you would need - a very well equipped kitchen, large dining table, log burners (x2), wonderfully bathrooms (x3) with plenty of fluffy towels and complimentary toiletries, great central heating for chilly evenings, TVs, DVDs and some board games, WIFI, lots of parking space, enclosed garden. There really was nothing else that we needed while we were there. From a location point of view, the village of Hollocombe is central between Exmoor and Dartmoor. We spend some time at Westward Ho beach (about 35mins drive) and around Barnstaple/Bideford and it is easy to access Dartmoor National Park. There are also local walks very nearby and willies are provided. The village does not have a nearby shop / pub (that we found) - but you are in a peaceful secluded spot in the Devon countryside and is worth it !We highly recommend this property and certainly plan on returning in the future."

"We're so glad we picked St Michael & All Angels for our honeymoon. Gilly was amazing, welcoming us into the church and leaving a fantastic hamper full of goodies. The property is astounding, the pictures really don't do it justice. Everything has been thought of to make your stay as relaxing and convenient as possible, from the filtered water and ice dispensing fridge freezer (Loved this!) to every size and shaped saucepan you could ever need; from slippers to wear around the house to microfibre cloths left with the baths so you could wash out the glitter from your bath bombs. The EE signal booster was fantastic, giving us both stonking WiFi and Mobile reception throughout the property. The church is absolutely in the middle of nowhere, it's in a tiny little hamlet of its own and the biggest road running through it is a little single track. This was exactly what we wanted. Surrounded by wildlife and So. Many. Squirrels. Most nights the sky cleared and we could stand outside and watch the stars whilst listening to the owls. We would absolutely come back to St Michael's. We've been to a lot of holiday cottages & St. Michael's is by far the most well thought out and equipped that we've stayed in so far. With the 3 generous bedrooms, it can accommodate a fairly large group yet it didn't feel remotely 'too big' with just the two of us.Thank you so much, Gilly for sharing your wonderful space! We will try our absolute best to get back down again in future.- The Newlyweds :)"

"We looked at hundreds of cottages in Devon to holiday and St Michaels came out top by a long way, however the photos and description do not do it justice, it is far better. We were so pleased we picked St Michaels to enjoy our holiday, as it was absolutely perfect. It started with a very warm welcome from the owner, for us and our dog and she had thought of everything we would need throughout our stay. It didn't feel like being on holiday but more like staying in a beautiful home from home. The décor is to an extremely high standard and very tastefully renovated by retaining the original character of the Church but ensuring a tasteful home. The village neighbours were extremely friendly and helpful, always passing the time of day with us when we met them, which was really nice. We definitely made the right choice and plan to return in the future. Thank you Gilly, you have an amazing home."
