What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jane - Verified booking

On entering the property there was an overwhelming smell of ash, soot and fust.

The front door and windows were open, and this did nothing to lose the smell; which stayed with us the full week! The cooker and oven were dirty. Near the oven door on the cupboard next to it, was a big scorch mark, given time will catch fire. Unfortunately we did not use it, which meant having to eat out, which we did not budget for, hence booking a place which we could cook in was a given. The worktop was sticky to touch, despite it being wiped by myself daily. We had no running hot water throughout our stay, and had to boil a kettle to wash the few pots we used. The fridge was clean. The bathroom needs a deep clean. There was mould on the seal, and between the tiles. There was someone else's hair near the shower unit and their used scrunchy. The towel's did not smell freshly laundered and were very thin. No running hot water from the sink tap in the bathroom. The beds need either replacing or a mattress topper put on top of them. There were black bits/things on the scatter cushions and the previous tenants tissues under one of the single beds. Again the bedding did not smell like it had been freshly laundered. The carpets were thread-bare in places, with stains scattered around the upstairs carpets. The paint work had a thick layer of dust and felt sticky and grimy to touch. If my child had, had his way we would not have stayed the first night, and just returned home the same day we arrived. I have asked the owner for half of the fee I paid to be reimbursement if not the full payment. The owner gives himself 11-3 to do a turnaround between visitors, and works a job as well, this clearly is not enough time to clean the cottage and the hot tub. Can you please request a full refund, I do have photos to support my review.

We visited as a family of 8, between 1 year and 53 years, both male and female.

Staying a week, we were lucky enough to have fantastic weather. The house is well situated on a small hill, with super views. The gardens are nice and child friendly. Over all we found the house poorly maintained and it could have been cleaner. There were lots of cobwebs and the furniture is well worn. The kitchen has been very well used and its well past the stage that it should be upgraded. There was some Engagement confetti beside the TV unit, which I do not think was left there this month. When you sit on the upstairs toilet in the shower room, it slips to the side. General finishes around the showers, sinks and bath have mould and is coming away at parts. The hot tub or should I say the hot bath, is like other things in the house past its best. Only one jet works, which means its more like a hot bath than a hot tub/spa. The house is handy for all areas in the south of the Lake District, however, its a bit of a drive to Bowness and Windermere. The description mentions 15 minutes then 25 minutes, which may be achievable as the crow flies. However, on about three occasions the fastest it took us was 40 minutes.

      The cottage was as described.

However I think a floor plan would be handy. We had a part of 9 here from all ages, it was difficult to organise rooms without a floor plan provided as the bathrooms were need to be pointed out on the top and lower floor for out elderly family member who struggled with the stairs after having dinner in kitcken. The place could have been cleaner with covid. The description could have been clearer as it mentioned a high or cd player and dvds for us to watch, however, these items were removed due to covid but board games that could have been used by anyone were left. We took cds with us but no cd player which was very disappointing, if it was mentioned before hand we would have brought one. Over all with everything being said I had a great holiday and the views from the hot tub were amazing! I'd recommend but not to anyone taking an elderly family member due to toilet and bathroom issues only. The beds were comfy and the sofas. Maybe small cushions for the dining room chairs (slightly uncomfortable after a while). Thank you for a great stay!

      Steve was the perfect host.

It was my gf bday and requested in advance for roses to be on the bed on arrival to which he did without bother. It was extremely thoughtful. We arrived gone midnight after a 7 hour drive but next day were greeted by Steve who was very polite and thorough giving us a tour of the grounds. Showing us how the hottub works and giving us a tour of the land. Steve checked in during the week to make sure we had everything we needed and suggested places for us to visit in the nearby area. The property itself was cozy, plenty of firewood provided to light the house fire, incredible heat for those cosy nights in, everything in the property was spot on from the shower to the bed to the sofa and cooking facilities, the bed was extremely clean and comfy, the bathroom and facilities were spot on clean and the kitchen and cooking area and utensils were all clean and fresh. Overall it was a brilliant stay and we will definitely be returning in the near future. Matt + Rach
