"The cottage is pleasantly convenient for the amenities in Winscombe and the owner lives on site and is helpful. Location is excellent as a central hub for exploring.Challey's Cottage is a three star cottage, not unduly costly, but is on the uncomfortable end of three stars with a sofa that is uncomfortable and two hard wooden 'easy chairs' that give it a good run for its money. The beds were hard. We got used to them after a couple of days.We did not expect an intrusive splash page when logging onto the WiFi, nor for it to appear so often during a logged in session, nor did we expect the cottage handbook to tell us to ration our internet use and that it was monitored for overuse by the owners. When another cottage was occupied by guests we were sure we were contending for WiFi access. Often our connection dropped out.The other thing we did not expect was to have it suggested that we bring towels during the pre-arrival phone call. Towels were supplied, though one kitchen towel/teacloth was rather on the sparing side.It would not take much to update the cottage and make it a comfortable base to return to, nor to get it a further star. It needs the owners to stay in it for a week. Then they will have a better understanding of the needs of their guests.Positive points: Location, peace and quiet (unless the wind blows the M5 soundtrack your way), helpful owners, dark skies (would like to be able to switch the automatic outside lights off to see them better), FreeSat TVNegative points: Comfort and facilities. Yes, we could have mentioned it at the time, but there can have been no scope for enhancement except by refurnishing. We had our pillows upgraded. You can only ask for just so muchEngineering Work: We accept the the BT engineer had to fix the internet service. it improved after that visit, but remained unreliable."

"This was a very spacious, well equipped house which was great for our family of 8 adults and two children (aged 4 and 6). However there were a number of things which I feel need to be brought to your attention. The whirlpool bath did not work and my phone call to the owner regarding this was left unanswered. The carpet in one of the rooms which joined to make the family room were rather stained and a clump of hair was found on the shower wall tiles. The dishwasher was not cleaning very well so I examined the filter which was very clogged and had to be thoroughly cleaned. I also had to replenish the salt and rinse aid. I was made aware that I would be expected to furnish my own dishwasher tablets but did not expect to provide the salt and rinse aid. A torch was provided but did not work. In addition there was no way to control the heating. On a number of evenings we were a little chilly but had no way to increase the temperature. We had been warned not to touch the radiator thermostats as this might result in the heating going off. There were an unnecessarily large number of notices warning about the downstairs electric toilet. The toilet seat in the bathroom was broken which meant it kept slipping. There was no information regarding recycling and the main bin which was already half full on the Friday was not emptied on the Wednesday. However there was a note saying the materials for recycling should be properly sorted and it was obvious that there were not the correct number of recycling bins. These might seem small things but when paying premium rates they are details that I think should be ironed out. On a more positive note, the welcome pack was generous and much appreciated and the location was great for walking and exploring the surrounding area."

"Our hosts were v friendly and helpful, lending us their own (larger) saucepan when we needed one and offering use of their own personal freezer. Farm setting and location v peaceful, lovely walks nearby and beach and other fun sites a short drive away. Cottage was big enough for our family of four, cosy and mostly comfortable and helped us have a restful break away from home. Table tennis facility, while not v roomy, was v much appreciated.A couple of wooden spoons and one more well-sized saucepan ;) and matching lid would make the kitchen facilities even better. Cutlery drawer, shower handle fitting and shower hose could do with a good clean. The bedrooms might benefit from new pillows as the ones provided were pretty tired and misshapen. Quibbles that are hopefully v easy to fix and were ones we chose not to spend much time thinking about while we were there."

"The cottage itself was attractive but felt that things hadn't been checked prior to our arrival. Numerous light bulbs both inside and outside the cottage were blown but fortunately we had taken our own torch as both outside the owner's property and the cottage was pitch black at night, although there had been mention of a torch in the kitchen which we never found. There was very little crockery and cutlery considering there was a full size dishwasher. The fire was not working which heated both the living room and bedroom but was told there was underfloor heating which only worked in the bathroom. The living room was noticeably cold, particularly at night. However, we did enjoy our stay and the setting was beautiful, but I would not rate it as 5 stars because of lack of attention to detail which makes your stay faultless."

"Very poorly equipped, no spare bin bags, no cleaning products, no extra touches. Very minimal. No towels included 1st time in years with Hoeseasons. All electrical products dated and the cooker was so old the markings on the controls were completely worn off. No “Welcome Pack” explaining location of fuses/doctors/instructions for cottage equipment etc. Just a pile of dated leaflets most of which referred to last or previous years. The entire property had cobwebs on all walls and ceilings rear of bed rear of sink. The property could do with a complete redecoration. With all this said there was plenty of parking a very peaceful location and a friendly welcome. Very disappointing considering the 30 years we have booked cottage holidays."
