As we opened the front door were greeted by warmth, a delicate perfume and a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the garden on the hall table. In the kitchen there was a generous welcome gift enclosed in a card by Jo Taylor, an artist who stays there. Even more, the welcome folder enclosed a walkers' map of the area for us to keep. How very thoughtful! On further exploration we found the delightful cottage to be surprisingly spacious for the two of us. The lounge contained helpful guidebooks but our favourite was a large book with historic photographs of Selworthy and Luccombe. A guide at Dunster Castle was most insistent that we should visit Watchet the next day, Wednesday, as it was also Market Day. This we did, but we made it extra special by travelling there from Dunster Station on a steam train (parking £1). The Kitchen, East Quay, provided a superb vegetarian lunch. Parking was not as ideal in Porlock for the magnificent Exmoor Coaster trip. Beware, Doverhay Car Park, the location of the bus stop, is only a short stay car park! Unexpectedly, friends were staying in Selworthy at the same time. We enjoyed a memorable meal together at The Lower Ship in Porlock Weir, a perfect venue. The pork and salmon dishes were excellent. There's a vehicle registration recognition system in place in the main car park, so you just tap in the car registration when you are about to leave to find out how much you have to pay. Walking through Luccombe on our arrival, we found free beans on offer. Another perfect welcome! We didn't have time to enjoy all we wanted to do in the area, so will just have to return!

Horner Cottage is well equipped and was meticulously clean; one might even say clinically so, which was great but the instructions to leave the TV remote in its plastic bag in the designated spot amongst other similar prescriptive instructions seemed somewhat over the top! Do be mindful of the location details - “ Horner Cottage is accessed by passing through Luccombe Cottage's garden to reach the front door” if you might be phased by having to walk directly through the other property’s garden/ past their windows to access your cottage. Luccombe Cottage was not occupied during my stay which was just as well as I should have felt awkward accessing/leaving my cottage early or late in the day thus potentially disturbing my neighbours as I crossed the shingle garden and opened the squeaky gate at either end. Be aware there is absolutely nothing in the way of food or drink items in the cottage ie not even any salt, pepper, sugar or oil. However there is washing up liquid and body wash sachets in the bathroom along with a generous cash sum in lieu of a welcome pack. Re Wi-Fi link; this worked well once WiFi calling had been activated. Reception is best in the lounge and upstairs bedroom but less reliable in the kitchen or garden. The boiler/generator located in the garden is also quite noisy when in operation. Finally be aware, if you have more than one car in your party you will be required to park it off the premises as there is a strict one car space policy for each cottage.

Such a lovely cottage and so well thought out! Super clean with a lovely bathroom and comfortable living room. One of the highlights for me was the French doors onto the courtyard herb and flower garden. Patio furniture made this a lovely place for breakfast in the sunshine and this was in October! The small lawned back garden area next to the owners fabulous grounds was surrounded by trees and there were lots of birds and squirrels to entertain! I met Michael, one of the owners who was very friendly and interesting. We could have talked for ages! He was gardening one evening as I was about to walk to the post box up the Lane! Otherwise I didn’t see the owners all week! They were very good communicators before the start of the holiday so you knew exactly what to do if you needed anything. Less than a mile along the lane is a lovely farm shop with fresh local produce, a lovely tea garden and a riding stables. A National Trust carpark and toilets can be found there. A great place to start woodland walks if that’s your thing. So close to Porlock village or more shops at Minehead if needed. I would definitely have stayed longer if I’d known how nice it was going to be. I hope to be back soon it was very relaxing and comfortable.

We were delighted by how spotlessly clean the cottage was, which made such a difference. The owner was friendly and helpful. Local map and walk suggestions most useful. Very well thought out extras and equipment in the cottage with neat information folder, dog towels, treats and bowl, a generous surprise basket of local produce, which we much enjoyed (we liked the support of local businesses), and the precise information about the recycling etc was helpful. We particularly enjoyed several walks in Horner Wood using the map, it is a beautiful wood, ancient in parts, extensive, varied and interesting throughout. The directions for a local walk printed out by the owner was also much enjoyed, particularly as there were strategic tea shops en route! We also had a walk to Bossington Hill with fine views in all directions - from the car park below Selworthy Beacon at the end of a small road running North West up a steep hill and along a ridge from Minehead. At the end of the week we feel very ready to come back and explore more of the area.
