What our customers say about their holidays

We all loved the cottage from the minute we arrived.

There was such a lovely homely feel to the place. It was tastefully decorated throughout, with some really lovely paintings on the wall. I loved the quirky touches, the large reindeer sitting in a comfy chair in the lounge, and the group of teddy bears on the landing that varied in age. There were plenty of books to read or some jigsaw you could do. The kitchen was fully equipped to cater for all your needs, with an old table in the middle that you could sit at; the table brought back memories of sitting by a similar table with my grandma. All the rooms were larger than envisaged, so there was plenty of room to relax in. The master bedroom was huge with a triple aspect overlooking the road and the fields. The bathroom was large with a bath and a shower over the bath and there was also a separate shower room with toilet down stairs. The 2 twin rooms were large with plenty of wardrobe space. The lounge had 2 very comfy sofas, a large chair to sit on to watch the TV if you wanted to. There were reference books and maps in the room for guidance. The dining room had a large round table with 6 chairs.another comfy chair and sofa. The garden area was lovely a big table and chairs, where you could watch the birds at the feeders, in the meadow area leading down to the pond was an area with a BBQ and a summer house. The pond is fed by a stream running through it, there was a lifebuoy and a rowing boat. This is definitely a cottage where you can relax and feel right at home.

We had a wonderful, relaxed and comfortable stay at Thorn Cottage over Easter.

Three adults, three children and a dog found that there was plenty to explore - games and books in every nook and cranny, spaces for playing hide and seek, games of cricket in the meadow. Our 7 year old daughter taught herself how to play a couple of simple tunes on the piano. Our dog is a little too much of an explorer to be able to be off the lead in the meadow (we should have named him Houdini!), but enjoyed long morning walks through the lanes. If you’re thinking of bringing a dog with you - be mindful of the hedge at the top of the meadow, it’s an escape opportunity! Short drives (or a hilly walk) to amenities in Chagford: Spar, pubs, greengrocer, clothes, information… We were able to get a few hikes of decent length with our three children. The porch made an excellent boot room upon our return and plenty of hot water for all to have a good shower. The facilities in the kitchen are rustic in a way that is charming, like taking a step back in time. But all mod cons are available, easy to find and use. The beds are extremely comfortable and we all took advantage by sleeping in only to be woken by the sound of birds, the occasional soft sound of hooves or the master thatcher arriving to re-thatch a neighbouring property. We all feel so grateful to have been able to stay at Thorn Cottage and have already recommended that our friends and family also spend holidays there.

      What an absolute gem !

All mullioned windows & exposed beams, nooks & crannies, very tastefully furnished, and with literally EVERYTHING required for a peaceful & relaxing holiday. Having stayed at many properties in the South- West, we can honestly say that this is THE most delightful cottage we have had the pleasure of booking ! Ideally situated for visiting the many places of interest in Devon, but if you are so inclined, you could easily spend a week here just chilling ! The gardens have several seating areas & if in season, the apple trees will provide you with a readily available crop of beautiful fruit ! It is really secluded & quiet, literally all you can hear is birdsong. Sitting in the window seat was delightful, especially early morning/ late evening. The cottage was exceedingly clean & tidy on arrival, & credit must be paid to the housekeeper. Also, the welcome wine & chocolates were greatly appreciated, & a nice gesture. As was the call from David ( the owner ) to check that everything was to our satisfaction on the first night of our arrival. We could find NOTHING to fault ( how many places could you say this about ? ) & we would thoroughly, & without hesitation, recommended this property. Be warned though - the lane in & out of the hamlet is VERY narrow & not for the faint-hearted, but easily negotiable IF you take it cautiously & with consideration for the locals ! In summary - 10/10 from us !

Thank you very much for the use of this lovely cottage.

The owners are excellent communicators and very much cared that our holiday was comfortable. They made us feel welcome with a gift of Prosecco & milk in the fridge. There were clear instructions for everything, in fact we have stayed in many holiday houses but this was the easiest and most user friendly set up we've encountered. The cottage was clean and very well kitted out, the kitchen was easy to use with good quality appliances & cooking equipment. The garden was so very pretty, as one might expect of a rural Devon thatched long house, with roses round the door and lots of little spaces in the garden to capture the sun! The property is so peaceful and we really did feel at home...we were sorry to leave but we hope to return next year. Thank you once again to Hilary & David, who are lovely people, conscientious, & checked we were OK after our late arrival. :-) PS. Recycling the rubbish is always a tricky subject in an area one doesn't know! We recommend sussing it out sooner rather than later & don't leave it till the last minute like we did...with the usual head-scratching!!

We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our holiday at the beautiful Appletree Cottage.

The information pack that we received prior to our arrival was the most comprehensive we have ever seen and provided extensive details on the home, equipment, directions, local area and much more. The owners clearly want to ensure that their guests have the best holiday possible and were only too pleased to help in any way. The house really felt like a home, and it was spotless. The garden is beautiful and the location was perfect for us - we enjoyed trips into Dartmoor, to Paignton Zoo and spent an enjoyable rainy day exploring the World of Marbles and The Jolly Roger in Bovey Tracey. Returning to Appletree Cottage at the end of each day was a joy and it was a privilege to be able to stay in this beautiful thatched cottage. Our son particularly enjoyed the large window seats, where he spent time each morning reading. Thank you too for the beautifully laid out welcome - the attention to detail in this home was second to none. We would certainly recommend Appletree Cottage.
