What our customers say about their holidays

    • Stuart - Verified booking

Pixie Cottage is a very old fisherman’s cottage and was built when people were shorter than now.

I’m 5’ 9” or 1m 75cm for those that think that way. I managed to go a whole week without banging my head on the staircase, only doing so on the last morning. For anyone taller I would just say heed the warnings or you’ll collect a good few bruises. Also, you will have to crouch when using the shower as there was barely an inch or so of clearance between my head and the ceiling. Other than that the cottage is great, superbly equipped and only a short walk from the centre of Looe. However, that walk is relatively steep, especially if you opt to turn left and take the short route. You have to bear in mind that we hail from Cambridgeshire where it is relatively flat. I would say that if you have mobility issues I could not recommend staying here but if you are generally fit I would have no reservations whatsoever in saying it’s a great place to stay.

We found Looe to be a lovely place.

However, the property really let our stay down. It is in need of some investment/TLC and a really deep clean. We didn't enjoy being in the cottage because everything felt so dirty- the sofas, (under the sofas was disgusting), the kitchen floor, sides, I could go on. The cottage had a very fusty smell as well. Other notes- no bins upstairs, front garden needs cutting back- walking up the steep steps was difficult because of the overgrown bushes), oven needed trays- the one that was attached to the door wasn't big enough and was fixed too low, recycling- the guide said recycling could be taken to milpool car park- there isn't recycling facilities there, so we had to bring our recycling home (!!!!). The cottage could be beautiful and enjoyable if the above was taken note of. For the price we paid wholly disappointing.

Pros The cottage is conveniently located with easy access to West and East Looe and Hannafore as well as the local Spar and 72 and 73 bus stops.

The lane is generally quiet, and we were lucky and took advantage of the free parking space opposite the cottage. The rooms are spacious and clean when we arrived. Cons The cottage still has a number of damp patches. The dining area wall is particularly damp, as well as blistering of paint from the ceiling in the main bedroom. Despite previous responses that has been fixed, there is still a great deal of damp in the cottage and so much so we could never get our clothes to dry! Whilst tastefully decorated and furnished we found the wet room difficult to use as there is only a small space near the entrance that is not wet. Also the vinyl type wet room floor kept coming away from the tiles. It would have been helpful to have a freezer (even if a small freezer compartment at the top of the fridge).

The location of the house was very good in that we could walk into Looe town (no parking necessary).

It was not good however because of the steep hill we had to climb to get back to the house. Even worse were the steps leading up to the front door and up the back garden. Made of stone, they were extremely steep, very slippy, and the handrail buried in the bushes. This made getting heavy luggage both in and out very dodgy indeed as a fall would have been possibly serious. It was dangerous for everybody let alone people with limited mobility. In addition parking in the allotted space was often very difficult because of the narrowness of the lane and the fact that cars were nearly always parked directly opposite. The house itself was very spacious and comfortable and well equipped although some fittings needed to be improved. It was also unfortunately surrounded by some very shabby property in dire need of renovation.

    • Cole - Verified booking

Downlea is a great place to stay, not far from the town and the beach, it is a lovely house built into the hillside with great views from the master-bedroom and with lots of room for all the family.

It has a good sized parking space at the front for a small to medium sized car (we have a medium sized SUV which fitted fine), Wi-Fi and a good kitchen and bathroom with everything you are likely to need. There are three downsides. First the access via a narrow and steep stair case will make it difficult for some, but this would be significantly improved if the folliage were cut back and the steps jet sprayed making them less slippy when wet; the front of the house has masses of ivy stealing most the light from the main lounge making the room dark and hard to read in; and finally, three light bulbs were blown that needed replacing. All maintenance issues that if corrected would make this holiday property perfect!
