What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mr Heawood - Verified booking

Battys Hangout is clearly a fairly new cottage that is quiet, private and well equipped. The bedroom was a very good size, carpetted and with a kingsize or super kingsize, comfortable bed. There are electric radiators, but since the May temperatures were quite good, these did not come on. Water was always hot. Outside on the patio the table and two chairs always were in the sun - all of the day. A facility for washing and tumble drying were just a few hundred yards away on the same site. A quiet place to relax when not out visiting nearby beauty spots. Places such as Port Isaac, Boscastle and Tintagel were very close, and the town of Wadebridge not far away with it's cycleway to Padstow or the other way to Bodmin and beyond. Plenty of places to visit and we enjoyed the Bodmin Steam Railway and numerous other places. St Ives is about an hour and a quarter away on good roads. This seaside town we had visited several times before but were surprised just how much it has to offer, including numerous beaches and opportunities for boat hire and/or trips.

Was disappointed the washing machine was broken.

At first we thought it was just one of those things but having read other reviews now it appears its been an ongoing issue that hasn't been addressed. Also neighbours were quite disrespectful complaining we weren't parked near enough to the wall and then subsequently had their own friends round who parked in front of our gate blocking us from leaving the cottage basically. Also their dog fouled in the courtyard and it wasn't cleaned up. That's no fault of sykes or the owner of our cottage though. Big thumbs up for the numerous books, games, dvds available on arrival. A very good selection, thanks for that. As for basic facilities I saw someone complain about I think this was very unfair on the owners. To grumble there wasn't milk or coffee provided is frankly ridiculous. Why this would be expected I don't know. True essentials were all provided. Our only other negative would be that there needs to be more of a focus on directions to find the cottage. It wasn't easy. On the whole though a very enjoyable break and we would definitely recommend.

The only issue regarding the facilities is that there is only one off-road car parking, although there is street parking close-by.

We were aware of this before booking. I cannot recall if the information provided prior to arrival indicates that the front third of a building is in fact a private dwelling. We had a plumbing crisis during our stay involving water over-flowing from the main bathroom shower, passing through the bunkroom light fitting en-route to the floor below. A combination of luck and quick-thinking on our party gave us time to remove the soft furnishings and place buckets, so no long term damage. The person occupying the bunkroom for four nights had to sleep the last two on a mattress in the lounge. The owner responded well to the issue and appeared to have resolved it the following morning. Unfortunately there was a minor overflow the next day from the same shower. We reported this and we assume it was dealt with, but received no feedback. We did not use the shower again. Apart from this, we were impressed with the cleanliness, comfort and facilities of this cottage.

Very hard to find in a cul-de-sac off the main road through Tregoodwell a detailed map would have been very helpful, even the residents of this small Hamlet didn’t know where it was.

Picture of property doesn’t show how tight the access is and was made to feel apprehensive about parking and succumbed the unfriendliness of one of the neighbours over our parking two cars even though we had checked with Sykes and owner prior to booking that this was OK. We were also told that there was parking in the side roads, this really isn’t the case, roads too narrow, and was already taken over by locals transit vans and other rental properties. Was disappointed that the cupboards were bare of any essential items ie condiments would have been nice to know in advance, plus more suitable dishes needed to use in microwave. Fridge/Freezer doors didn’t close properly without pushing hard on them. Found double bed creaked hence didn’t sleep well also toilet seat in en-suite lose and doesn’t fit properly plus toilet in wet room rocks. Most of the windows don’t close properly either.

Great cottage, Very pleased with the facilities.

The Camelford town is quite small with only one working pub, the Masons Arms. Quite dated inside but ok. The meals we had were very big. There is a great little cafe that does excellent cream teas and lovely breakfasts opposite a nice park. there's a pharmacy , CoOp and a couple of other stores. It's about 20 mins drive to port Isaac (doc Martin), if you go you must have a fresh crab sandwich at the Old school house restaurant . There is a bus service (10 & 95) that go to the local beaches and beyond. The airfield museum is worth a visit if you like war type stuff 10 mins away. Some of the country lanes are a bit scary if your used to town driving. Definitely worth doing a walk up Roughtor, only about 25 mins to go up to the top and great 360 deg view of the area, Roughtor road is single track road so be ready to pull in to a passing place.
