What our customers say about their holidays

    • Dipika - Verified booking

My husband and I had a wonderful stay in this cottage for our wedding anniversary.

The cottage had everything we needed, including some delicious eggs from the farm itself. We loved being surrounded by lambs, chickens and cows, and the farm attracted plenty of birdlife too. The location was excellent - close to Wastwater but very quiet. Our hosts were very friendly and close by if we needed anything. We went on some excellent walks and my husband managed to scale both peaks at the top of the Screes while I read books in the sunshine by the lake and outside our cottage. It was a beautiful, peaceful break that wasn't spoiled by the two days of rain that we had - you have to expect some ups and downs in the weather when you're in the Lakes! The Screes pub in Nether Wasdale, a mile away, offered some excellent ale and food, albeit outside due to COVID rules. We also had some lovely ice cream from the Sawmill cafe, which is also a farm shop. There wasn't much else open/to do in the immediate vicinity other than walking, due to a combination of the remote location and COVID, but we didn't care - it was exactly what we needed after spending the pandemic stuck at home. We'll definitely return to Wastwater and this cottage in the near future, if only so my husband can knock a few more of the big fells by Wastwater off his list!

The area surrounding the cottage is beautiful with some lovely walks nearby which the owner Sally Anne helpfully pointed out to us.

The cottage was cosy, comfortable, and well-equipped. There were some nice touches like milk in the fridge, eggs and a little welcome basket with biscuits and sweets. The farmers showed us their animals and even let us feed one of the baby lambs which our three-year old daughter was delighted by. The welcome was very friendly and Sally Anne gave us some good tips on child-friendly places to visit. There are nice pubs in the nearby hamlet Nether Wasdale and the village of Gosforth. The pizza place in Gosforth The Wild Olive was especially tasty and even did takeways which were very popular! There was a lovely playground there. We found many child-friendly places within an hour's drive such as Muncaster castle with stunning views (the meadow vole maze went down especially well), the Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick, the Maryport Aquarium and the Lake District Wildlife park. Altogether it was a great holiday, went too quickly and can't wait to go back. And it didn't even matter it was raining half the time it was still gorgeous!

The cottage has all that you need and the location is remote.

The owner answered our first call to give ETA but we couldn’t get hold of them after that. We therefore didn’t get additional logs needed for the log burner. Heater in the bedroom was inadequate and had no instructions. Upon arrival, after 7 hours drive, there was no heating, hot water or sense of welcome. We had to find and follow a set of instructions to turn on heaters, fridge, freezer, microwave etc. We’ve stayed in lots of places and never had this experience. Due to the bad weather, coupled with the remote location with limited alternatives to hiking, we left two days early. Again, no answer from the owners when we called to tell them, and we’ve heard nothing from them since. We won’t be going back, and can’t really recommend this place, especially since there are so many lovely other options.

Ten out of Ten from us !

A gorgeous one bedroom cottage in a fabulous location for getting away from it all and for walking the high fells most of which can be reached from the doorstep. Fairly remote location where the HardKnott pass and Wrynose Pass meet so take all that you need with you as you cannot just nip out to the shops. Only used the car once during the week to go to the Newfield Inn at Seathwaite about 5 miles away. Cottage is very well equipped, comfortable and cosy, good logburner and Sandra (the owner) who lives next door at the farmhouse was absolutely fantastic during our stay. So helpful and genuine. We saw her several times during the week and each timeshe was so cheery and hospitable. Dark sky location and no light pollution. A beautiful place. We will definitely be coming back here.

Lovely place to stay for a week's hiking around the Lakes.

Friendly owners and comfortable cottage - has just about everything you need and more. We were able to put our bikes in their barn and there was a really handy freezer and drying room in another barn opposite which meant wet and smelly coats/footwear didn't have to go in the cottage! There are some great walks from the doorstep - although be warned that "the Screes" walk isn't at all easy. A short drive (10 mins or so) to National Trust car park at Wasdale puts you at the start of a host of classic mountain hikes including Scafell Pike and many others. Also a short drive (5 mins) takes you to some great areas for swimming and paddleboarding - but leave early to make sure you can park. Our first time this side of the Scafell massif but we'd definitely come back.
