What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mr Gill - Verified booking

We stayed in the Sheep Pen for 5 nights and it was a good base and in a good position for exploring the Lake District. However the property is basically a converted basement of the main house. On entering the property there is a smart bathroom to the right and this is the only part of the property wholly above ground. From the front door there is a steep set of stairs, with restricted headroom and a protruding shelf, leading down to the main living area. This made it very difficult getting luggage in and out. The living and sleeping areas have low ceilings and beams which anyone above 5ft 10ins would find challenging. This area is mainly below ground level with only 2 small windows at eye level to the outside. There is no door on the entrance to the bedroom and downstairs there is no access to the outside garden. The underfloor heating was not working and the whole place felt damp (despite the dehumidifiers provided). The kitchen equipment had seen better days. The property was described as dog friendly but the stairs made it very difficult to get the dog in and out. The only access to the outside garden was through the front door, through the side gate and around to the back of the house. The garden is not secure so it was not possible to let the dog run free. On the positive side, the décor is fresh & the upstairs bathroom was nice. The owners, living above, were very nice & obviously mindful that they had guests below. The location, Pound Farm in Crook, is both beautiful & ideal for exploring the lakes generally.

Extremely disappointed in the cleanliness of the property.

It is supposed to be thoroughly cleaned in line with COVID but it was definitely not. My daughter and I had to clean the kitchen for us to use it - definitely not the standard I would expect. The house sleeps 8 people and we brought quite a lot of food with is - the fridge was nowhere near suitable, far too small. The microwave hadn’t been cleaned either with food residue stuck to the roof! There were only 7 dessert/cereal dishes too! The drawers in the bedrooms haven’t seen a duster for months! The bannister rail was filthy. We had two 80+ year olds in the party and nowhere in the property description does it state it is a steep hill of approximately 500 meters up to the property from Bowness. The description doesn’t mention the ‘access only’ driveway and the awkwardness of parking 2 big cars. There is only 1 standard outdoor bin for all rubbish which again isn’t really enough. The plumbing is noisy and requires attention it reverberates through the house and we are still trying to find the Jack and Jill bathroom!!! We go on a self catering family holiday every year and the only time we have had issues with the property is on the 2 holidays booked through yourselves in the Lake District - makes it hard for us to recommend to others. On the plus side the location for those who are able and fit and love the outdoors is fantastic. All in all the property just needs a good clean, a bit more attention to detail and some TLC and it would be fantastic.

Booked last min for couples, for a 50th birthday celebration.

A few days before we were due to arrive I reviewed our booking to ask some questions on what equipment was in the kitchen and it was the first time I saw some negative reviews - which did concern me. However, we found no issues with the property and it was perfect for this occasion. Its a bit dated but that just added to the charm of the house. Great location, even if its up hill on the way home. All the rooms were big and there was enough utensils in the kitchen. The fridge is only a standard size, so people need to be aware if they are a large group and going for more than a couple of days. We bought an electric cool box with us which helped with 7 adults (kept the fizz cold). The showers were lovely and powerful as well. Would suggest using the boot room to come and go as the front door was hard to open. The only complaints would be that the twin room that can be converted to a king was not make up in advance, even though we had requested this and it was also noted on our booking, but someone did come the following morning to do this, so it was no big deal. Bring toilet roll as there was only 1 roll in each toilet so we did have to buy a pack which we did not expect to do - but that was it - all in all it was a great house and we would come again (just wish we could bring the dog - but its no pets).

The electric wall heaters in the lounge were controlled by the owner on her mobile phone.

She kept turning the temperature down on them and sometimes off completely. We had to telephone her numerous times and ask her to turn the heating on or up, because the room was freezing. It was snowing outside when we were staying there. The Lake District can still be extremely cold even in the summer. The broadband service was so erratic and slow it would not allow Netflix or iPlayer to operate, so the tv was useless. We ended up using our own Vodafone data for the internet. The amount of stairs you have to climb from the front door up to the bedroom is 28, which is even a struggle for someone who is fairly fit. They provided us with one small bath and hand towel each for two weeks holiday, which is really penny-pinching, considering that there is no washing machine in the apartment to wash laundry. The property comes with an allocated parking space, which is ideal in the centre of Windermere. The apartment is located in the centre of Windermere, with shops, restaurants and pubs right on your doorstep. The lounge and bedrooms were decorated to a good standard with very nice furnishings. The kitchen was well equipped with everything required for cooking and eating.

      The directions should be updated.

“Cinderella Me” is now “Lakeland Retreats” and Morrison’s is now Sainsbury’s. I drove around the one way system 3 or 4 times before I spotted the entrance to College Court! The accommodation itself was lovely - comfortable and clean, well equipped and excellent location. Maybe not suitable for young families due to the internal staircases and cream sofas! The provision of only one parking space could be an issue for some guests because the only option was to park on the street and there are parking restrictions between 9am and 6pm. I had a friend stay for one night. She moved her car into one of the empty spaces in college court for 5-10 minutes to unload and immediately one of the permanent residents came out to tell her she couldn’t park there. The same happened when she did the same to pack the car. Also, it might be useful for guests to be aware that if you wish to eat out in Windermere, you will need to book well in advance! I tried to make reservations a week before our trip at the beginning of September and was told by more than one that they were fully booked until mid-October. Takeaway was difficult too, with two Chinese restaurants closed.
