What our customers say about their holidays

    • Peter - Verified booking

We were aware of some pitfalls before we went, however, the weeks weather did not help at all, rained everyday.

Lovely ancient friendly Village full of History. Great local shops and three good pubs. Our visit coincided with Remembrance which was lovely as we were adjacent to All Saints Church, which we found to be lovely and also full of great history. The road is quite unbelievable, as it seems that everyone uses it as a Rat Run and is quite dangerous. We were very lucky to get a parking space near to the Cottage on the first day and then managed to be outside 5 Church Street. We saw just how keen and sometimes a little aggressive in getting a parking space, trades peoples vans and other cottage rentals, that we did not move the car until the day we left, for fear of not getting a space back. We found the accommodation, mostly, to be in good order, however, there is so much damp, manufactured from nighttime condensation from the single glazed windows, particularly in both bedroom's , that that condensation permeates into the bedding and no doubt the curtains. Pools of condensate water had to be wiped up daily. There ought to be a bedside non slip rug as the floor is quite slippery in addition to its unevenness. The central heating and hot water was great as was the bathroom facilities. Everything needed was provided, thank you. The welcome gifts also appreciated. We normally stay in Bungalows, however, on this occasion we elected for the location above the normal Bungalow choice. This property would suit younger people and would probably be more suited to not having dogs. IMO. We could not find a Visitors Book which is a usual item in Sykes rented properties. There are several items of a minor cosmetic nature that should be attended to, like the front door lock, the lounge door handle to the porch , and the door lounge hinge to the stairs. Previous reviews have suggested some sort of focal point fire in the lounge, maybe just to give off that warm glow feeling. !

Thanks so much for our stay, the cottage was as described and in a great location.

The property is cosy but with plenty of room for 4 adults which was good. We stayed at New Year and were worried about how noisy it would be with being on a main road but we barely heard a peep from the road or our neighbours the whole week - it was a very peaceful stay. The village itself is lovely with plenty of options for pubs, and also the odd bakery, shop etc too. We were worried about what the courtyard/garden situation would be like but it was very contained and gates were always shut, so this was a huge perk for us. The walking options from the property were also lovely, but we were an easy drive away to get to some more 'famous' walks on some days too. We did find the parking a bit of a nuisance, especially with 2 cars, but kind of expected this based on the reviews and we never had to park more than a 5 min walk away so we managed fine. The only things we'd improve about the property in general are; the mattress in the master bedroom was extremely uncomfortable, the shower pressure was really bad and it was constantly going too hot or cold throughout showering, the condensation in the bedrooms was so bad at times that there were actual puddles on the floor, and finally it would have been nice to have a few more essentials like extra bin bags. Other than these things, we were generally very happy with the property and the stay - it had everything we needed for a cosy week away in the peaks. Thank you for having us!

The cottage had a well equipped kitchen including boiling water tap (although a kettle was also provided) and a very good shower room.

Parking was just outside the cottage in their gated courtyard, which is situated near the owner’s farmhouse. The settee was very comfortable and I also enjoyed sitting in the “rocking chair”! No mobile signal but the Wi-Fi was good. Much enjoyed the rural view, seeing the cows being moved daily to the top field. The cottage was well placed for sightseeing and would be good for cycling or walking,. We went on the Peak Rail steam train trip from Rowsley to Matlock, on a wet day, and enjoyed Matlock Bath, Ashbourne, Ilam Park, Dovedale, and Bakewell. The relatively nearby pretty village of Winster was a daily visit, for newspapers, local bread, butter, milk and groceries (local shop and Post Office). Sainsbury’s (with petrol station) and other shops could be found at Matlock. The garden was small but very secure for our two small dogs, with a small lawn and paved patio with garden seats - and an outside light for nighttime “visits”. As I was on crutches I did find the steps were quite steep to the garden, with no handrail, but I did manage, with care, and this was of course mentioned in the property description. A very handy porch/boot room to the front of the property was convenient to dry off the dogs and to leave our wet coats, shoes, etc! There was also a washing machine, if required, and a very handy mop! We enjoyed our visit to the cottage and would recommend.

We absolutely loved this cottage. The location was amazing - remote, so you felt you were properly in the countryside, but only 2 mins drive away from more major roads which then got us easily to every location in the Peak District. The location was one of the very best we’ve had in the UK. The property was absolutely amazing. It had lots of equipment you don’t normally find in properties like tons of toilet rolls and kitchen roll, bin bags & washing up liquid. Even kitchen foil! The kitchen was lovely to cook in and had everything you might need. There was also an insulated cafetière which came in handy, and an ice cube tray in the freezer. We loved the log burning fire in the lounge and the tv had access to Netflix and BBC iplayer which we appreciated. We had many happy evenings snuggled up watching TV. There was also a sun room which was lovely to sit and relax (we were pretty lucky with the weather). The children loved the table tennis in the games room, and there was plenty of room several cars on the driveway. The showers had great water pressure and all the bathrooms were to a very high standard. The beds were large and comfortable and the cottage was very spacious. There were plenty of amazing pubs serving wonderful food in nearby towns and villages. We would definitely come back again.

On arrival at the location no obvious sign of Clover Cottage.

Contacted owner via an Intercom system attached to farmhouse door. Owner apologised for non appearance said she would be home as soon as possible. Tried to describe where entrance to cottage was but signal kept breaking up and could not understand what she was saying. Spoke to a lady in the adjoining cheese factory who said she had never heard of Clover Cottage. Eventually found another person at cheese factory who directed me to the property. The entrance was off the farmyard but was not obvious that it was like photos on booking site. Entrance via a very unimpressive leanto to the back door. This led into a small kitchen with no window and then into the living room which was minimally furnished. The bathroom was off this room and was the best room in house with large walk-in shower, wash basin and toilet. The two bedrooms were uninspiring with large heavy furniture, one looking out to garden. The photos on the booking site gave the impression of a much more cosy and comfortable property which it was not. The cottage was described on the web site as "a stunning two bed roomed cottage" Not in my opinion. This short break was to give my wife a bit of a ' pick me up' after a recent stroke but because of what we found as described above we felt that we could not stay and we drove home.
