What our customers say about their holidays

    • Carla - Verified booking

      This property was beautiful.

It was clean and tidy and had everything needed for a comfortable stay. BEWARE!! We booked it specifically for the hot tub and it's privacy. The hot tub was amazing but we only got it for 2 nights out of our 3 night stay!!!! We were told to stop using it after 6pm on the last night so it could be cleaned down the next occupants. This was not made clear in the listing and if it had been, we would definitely NOT have booked it. We felt forced to go out on the last night so they could access the property to clean, empty and refill the hot tub for the next guests (who by-the-way didn't arrive until 3pm the following day!!!) When we came back it was still being refilled for several hours so we closed the curtains and sat watching TV in the cottage on our last night in stead of getting the last use of the hot tub. This was not what we paid for. We paid to have use of the hot tub for 3 nights and this totally spoiled the holiday, we were not impressed. Our Son was particularly disappointed because this cottage was his choice specifially for the use of the hot tub . I can't believe they did this and get away with it, we felt like we were an inconvience to them. You wouldn't do this is any other setting and be allowed to get away with it. If they needed time to prepare the hot tub for the next guests this should have been factored into their time not ours!!! In the future they should NOT book another occupant for the following day. There should be a gap between the bookings so they have time to clean and prepare the hot tub for the next guests. Our last night was totally ruined and it was a shame because we were really enjoying our stay. We used the hot tub of an evening so we could relax after a day of exploring the area. I would never book this venue again which is such a shame. I dont want to spend a full day disputing with the owner by text message while we were on a day trip. This really upset the family. If people don't want to use the hot tub this is a lovely cottage. However if you book it specifically for the hot tub, don't bother!! If you book 2 nights you will only get use of the hot tub for one night....this is a total rip-off. I will be seeking a partial refund for all the inconvenience.

The cottage was a fabulous place to stay.

There was a welcome pack on arrival (Coffee, tea, sugar, biscuits, bread and milk), the owners exceeded our expectations. A wonderful touch and it was very appreciated. The cottage was well stocked with everything we needed and was furnished to a very high standard. Andrew, the owner, was very helpful and gave advice on the area. We always find showers in holiday cottages a bit of a let down compared to the one we have at home but the owners hadn’t skimped on their choice of shower, it certainly matched the one we have at home in both power and space. If you like to be connected to the internet you won’t be disappointed staying here. The TV is run through the internet therefore you have a good choice of channels and whilst we were there we never lost connection on our iPads/computer. This cottage is situated in a lovely area suitable for walkers (I was more than happy), golfers (my husband was spoilt for choice) and a treasure trove of places to visit. There is only one thing I would point out, if you have a problem getting up stairs this cottage may not be for you. This is an old building, beautifully refurbished, however the staircase is not to today’s requirement, it is a little steeper than modern staircases, there is nothing the owners could do to rectify this. Having said that I would highly recommend this cottage and will hopefully return.

An excellent property, we have stayed on three occasions in the last 3 months.

Comfortable and warm in the main bedrooms and spacious kitchen/lounge/dining area. The games room is cooler, but you have to appreciate that you are living in a converted barn with high roof structure. The underfloor heating to living areas and the luxurious bathroom, and bedroom 2 works very well. The view from the living room window, overlooking Melbourne pool is superb, as are the sunrises. A discreet sign indicating the front door to Tithe Barn would be a help, when we first arrived, it was wet and dark, and it took us a while, and talking to local residents to know where the entrance was. My wife has mobility issues, but the 8 steps up to the first floor level were quite manageable, and once up there, everything is on one level. Church bells, and bell ringing practice are fine, it is a beautiful church next door. There is some aircraft noise from Castle Donnington, but that is unavoidable all around the area, and only at certain times, it did not detract from our stay. The staff from the Estates office dealt with any queries we had in a pleasent and efficient manner. Melbourne itself is a delightful village, and very friendly.. We reccomend the property and the location, but would rather keep it as a well kept secret!

This is a lovely, immaculately clean and tastefully decorated cottage with good quality furniture and all you need plus more.

It's located on a working farm in a beautiful part of Derbyshire and it was great to see the Derbyshire Gritstone sheep and chickens in the field next to the cottage as well as the horses and 4 extremely well behaved dogs. Dawn the owner is very friendly and helpful providing a great welcome pack of wine, milk, nibbles and fresh flowers as well as a fan to help my daughter cope with the extremely hot weather. It's a lovely base to visit the surrounding countryside and although we had some hot days we were still able to make use of the hot tub for which there were bath sheets provided and a 'man cave' bar to change in and enjoy drinks in. The beds were really comfortable which meant we all felt refreshed in the mornings. Just a really great place to stay and we will certainly be coming back.

This is our second stay at Chestnuts Barn and I'd be surprised if it's our last.

It is positioned beautifully, and is a fantastic little cottage excellently laid out for our usage with two bedrooms and a toilet downstairs, the living room, kitchen, and shower room being upstairs. This means if you struggle with stairs you can flop down in the (very comfortable) bed without having to struggle climbing. The landlords are very welcoming, patient, and friendly, but give you space to enjoy your holiday rather than checking in every day, but will answer any problem you have even around Christmas. They're also very responsive to feedback about the property and how to make it more comfortable or easier to use, and have been very accommodating. We will be back!
