What our customers say about their holidays

    • Christina - Verified booking

A well-equipped country cottage with scenic views immediately across a country road from the village public house and restaurant called The Crown.

(The Crown is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and we took advantage of their menu, beer and wines. We would say to anyone thinking of holidaying at 'Skohaven' cottage in Catton, that the accommodation is comfortable and equipped with most utensils/items that would be needed for a holiday away from the "madding crowds" The Bathroom in particular has all anyone needs with bath and shower. The special gift by the owner of fresh farm eggs, biscuits, bread and milk was gratefully received by us. 'Skohaven' is located quite central to Carlisle in the West and Newcastle/Whitley Bay eastwards. Therefore we found it an easy journey both ways to visit various villages and towns such as Corbridge and then onto Houseteads Fort (Roman settlement) plus Hexham - a countryside town that has almost everything; both for shopping and sightseeing. Hexham Abbey is worth visiting and has it's own cafe .It retains it's own Country park which sits alongside the river Tyne. Southwards from Catton is Allendale Village (quaint but pubs only open Friday/Saturday. Hexham has many cafe's and restaurants to visit and it is only approximately 8 miles away. We visited Derwent Water Reservoir. All in all I would recommend 'Skohaven' cottage if you are wishing for a 'get-away-from-it-all' restful holiday. P.S. The locals are so kind, informative and helpful

Beautiful cottage, clean and comfortable in a lovely village and next to a very good pub.

The furniture was good quality and the beds extremely comfortable. We were impressed by the immaculately clean rooms and the thoughtful welcome box. The downside was the smell coming from the cesspit next to the cottage. On our second day it was so bad we couldn't open the windows. My elderly mother wanted to go home bit decided to percevere with it. We couldn't sit out in the lovely garden on nice days because although not constant, the smell was on and off all the time and you could taste it. We would loved to have used the wonderful bbq facility but couldn't face doing our food in that smell. It was a real shame because it did put a dampener on our holiday with my elderly parents, 81 and 86 years old. Plus this was the most that we have spent on a cottage over past few years. My mother couldn't sleep very well because she couldn't have the window open. I note from previous comments on trip advisor that the owners have been told about this problem before which makes it even more disappointing because nothing seems to have been done. I dread to think how bad it was in the heat. Like I said, the cottage was amazing, clean and comfortable but please please please do something about the awful smell. I do hope that they contact me with how they are going to resolve the issue

Lovely cottage in great location; well-equipped kitchen and luxurious bath as well as spacious walk-in shower all appreciated!

Booking process very smooth. Parking in pub carpark opposite was very convenient: it *might* become trickier when pub reopens after refurbishment, though there is plenty of space. Only suggestion re cottage was that for summer, temperature setting for bathroom towel rail seemed rather high and made the room (and top floor) a bit too hot on arrival (settled down over time with open windows etc.). The Hexham-Allendale bus service was a bonus, stopping right by the cottage and allowing an easy trip into Allendale (and Hexham) as an alternative to taking the car. For those (like me) who don’t know the area, Allendale was a happy discovery: attractive village/town with an excellent independent co-op store, two pubs and a great café (The Forge, with art studios) - not to mention the unexpected delights of the small but fascinating Classic Sci-Fi museum! And Jill’s Catering Tea Room (Fri-Sun.) just up the road from Catton was lovely: delicious food, a stunning view south.

Thank you for such a wonderful stay!

This cottage has everything you could need for a comfortable stay to relax and unwind. It’s not often I return home and miss a bed and sofa that isn’t my own! The welcome pack on arrival was such a lovely touch. The cottage was clean and easy to keep warm. The sofa was so comfortable and cozy it was impossible to leave once on it. There are beautiful walks close by or not too far by car. The pub and co-op weren’t too far along in the next village. Would definitely book to stay again. The only issue if I was being really picky would be the parking, as you can’t really park outside the property without blocking a path. However, we rang the owners and they advised to park opposite the cottage and we were ok there for the week. We did park in the pub car park opposite too one night, which wasn’t an issue either. Again, thank you for a wonderful stay, it really did help with the January blues!

We brought two sides of our family together when we stayed at Tern Cottage and found that this beautifully decorated cottage offered something for everyone. What I loved most about this stay was the way we could all be gathered together in the enviable kitchen/dining space (dog included) but still be getting on with our own things if needed, like preparing food or reading a book. My 13 year old twins loved the big garden for football and were happy with the wifi and tech included inside the cottage. I most enjoyed walking our dog down through the sand duns to the beach of a morning. Overall it was a wonderful stay in a lovely part of the world and we will definitely be booking again, maybe for a Christmassy break next time and will look forward to the lovely little touches like the doggy welcome pack.
