About this property

Perched in the historic market town of Wooler, Northumberland, is this spacious semi-detached dormer bungalow, Compass Cottage. Enjoying a superb location at the top of a hill near the Northumberland National Park and within easy reach of the Cheviots, Compass Cottage is a fantastic choice for a group or family of six. The property benefits from roadside parking, a lovely front garden, and a generous, rear enclosed garden with a beautiful outlook. On the ground floor, you will find a well-equipped kitchen where you can rustle up tasty dishes, ready to enjoy in the dining room at the table for six in front of the electric woodburning stove, along with an inviting sitting room, featuring plush sofas, a Smart TV and an open fire, perfect for enjoying relaxing evenings with loved ones. Completing the ground floor is a shower room, where you can freshen up in the walk in shower, before retiring to the first floor to catch your rest in one of three well-presented bedrooms, two king-size and a twin. Explore the town, where you can treat your loved ones to fresh Italian cuisine at Milan, hearty breakfasts at Ramblers and hearty pub fare and local ales at The Anchor Inn and The Riverside Bar, stock up on essentials at the convenience store, or enjoy wildlife rich walks through Wooler Common. From here, you can easily venture into the stunning surroundings of the Northumberland National Park, where you can hike through the Cheviots, visit Linhope Spout Waterfall, or explore further to Hadrian’s Wall and Kielder Forest. Continue onto Berwick-upon-Tweed, where you can spend a day at the beach, test out your clubs at the excellent golf club or take a boat trip along the River Tweed. Further afield, you’ll find Alnwick, home to a famous castle which appeared in the Harry Potter film series, the Bailiffgate Museum, and The Alnwick Playhouse. The coast is around a 25 minute drive away where you can visit Holy Island, Holy Island is home to Lindisfarne Priory, one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo Saxon England, the island is now a popular tourist attraction with many visitors making a pilgrimage to the priory or following in the footsteps of the monks along St Cuthbert’s Way. Your adventure to Northumberland begins at Compass Cottage.

Wooler is a charming, historic market town that sits in the foothills of the Cheviot Mountains, which are a part of the Pennine Way. Wooler, sometimes known as "The Gateway to The Cheviots," is a great base from which to explore the rest of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Located on the border of Northumberland National Park, Wooler is not far from either the mediaeval town of Alnwick and its world-famous Castle and Gardens or the well-preserved Garrison town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Chillingham Castle, home to a legendary herd of wild white cattle, and Coldstream, on the Scottish side of the border, are both easily accessible by car.

Well equipped for self catering. Comfy beds, great shower. Nothing additional needed for a few days away. If returned to the area would look to book again.

The cottage is a dream: clean, wonderfully decorated and maintained and one of the most well stocked holiday homes I have ever visited. We are regular visitors to holiday homes around the world and rarely return to a property as the world is a big place, but we will definitely be back to Compass Cottage to explore even more of the area. A big thank you to Paul and Claire for the regular contact on things to occupy the grandchildren in inclement weather and also for the extremely thoughtful gift bag , it was so unexpected, but very much appreciated , we aim to return soon !!!

Exceptionally comfortable and welcoming. Well positioned for visiting the area and the town is within walking distance and well equipped for shops, pubs and restaurants. Very generous welcome pack to add to all the other pluses about this accommodation. 5 stars
