What our customers say about their holidays

    • Amanda - Verified booking

I booked the retreat for my sister Hen party weekend when the balance had been paid I had a lovely email from Mark and Jo advising me about our arrival and telling me that they would meet me to show me around the house when I arrived.

Upon arrival Jo was there to greet us and showed me around a house, I can only describe the house as stunning. The attention to detail that Mark has put in to this house is unbelievable. Underfloor heating makes the house feel all cosy and welcoming, there is a fire in the main room and Jo told me they could bring me some more logs down if needed (which we didn’t need as the heating was fabulous) The house is IMMACULATE I actually went around the house trying to find dust and we turned it into a game with a prize … Nobody won as there was none. The house is stocked with EVERYTHING that you would need…. dishwasher tablets, Dishcloths, tea towels, toilet rolls, soap absolutely everything (I had actually brought all of this with me as I didn’t know it was included so took it all home) Mark and Jo had put a lovely little welcome box out for us with some lovely Yorkshire treats and homemade biscuits which were divine. The Kitchen was stocked with everything you could need accept a zester lol but I did bring my own so it was fine. When I opened a cupboard there was a number of items (spices, salt, pepper, oil) which I am assuming have been left by other people which was fabulous and we did the same leaving some things that we had just opened. The Bedrooms were warm, comfy and had plenty of storage for everybody. The bedding was spotless and very good quality, my room had this amazing grey comforter at the bottom which I would love to know where it came from. In the room every bed had 3 different size towels which were brilliant white. Outside the house ….. Well where do I begin ….. Absolutely breathe taking, you drive down the hill to see a completely unspoilt landscape with nothing around (as Mark told me the landscape has not changed since the 1800 apart from the electricity that now comes to the house). Your neighbours are Sheep so Jo told me that making noise or playing loud music was not a problem. Outside has a large enclosed wooden bar which has a wine fridge and heating in. Also robes, towels and flip flops were provided which we made use of when going in the Hot tub. Every morning Jo and Mark came to check that the hot tub was working and the chemical levels were correct so if you had any problems (which you won’t) you could see them. If I could go to THE RETREAT every weekend I would as I just felt so relaxed and comfortable there. The weather was horrendous constantly rained apart from 2 hours but is was still amazing. I cannot recommend this highly enough and I am a women who like to moan but there is absolutely nothing to moan about

All the family went to the retreat on 31st of May 19 ,to celebrate my wife's 70 th Birthday.

Its an amazing house with fantastic facilities, beautiful countryside and scenery. The owner ,Jo,was lovely and made us very welcome on our arrival, came each morning to clean the hot tub . We were left on arrival a lovely welcome box with some nice treats and scrummy home made biscuits , they were delicious The house is so spacious and is really clean ( I'm a bit OCD and have high standards ) but it was spotless. the bedrooms were really well fitted and the beds were so comfy and lovely white linen and fluffy towels. The children's room had 4 single beds and the TV was a real bonus for them to play on their x box video games etc .( give the grown ups a bit of peace ) . The main bedroom was beautiful, with walk in wardrobe and en suite . Main upstairs bathroom so spacious and lovely free standing bath . Lounge is huge and very comfy , TV , lovely fire very comfy sofas and chairs , perfect for a chill out day if weather bad lots of board games .The kitchen and dining area are fantastic, there is everything you need and more , so well equipped they have thought of everything. The hot tub and wooden bar are a really great feature with lovely fluffy robes and towels and this really made our holiday, the children loved it ,and the big children loved it even more. I would recommend this house to anyone who wants a family holiday / party / celebration.Could not fault this accommodation it was well worth every penny . Would definitely go again

The Old Corn Store was the first holiday myself and my husband went on together when we had only been dating a few months - and this visit was our 2nd stay at the property (for our 2nd wedding anniversary!

). We received a warm welcome from the hosts - bubbly, milk and biscuits was a lovely touch and very welcome after a long drive from Scotland! The cottage is lovely - amazing views, hot tub and has everything you need for your stay. It was also fun to see the animals on the farm - there are often helpers around on the farm so just ask them and they are more than happy to let you visit the animals. Only gripe would be that we were waaay too warm the first night - however, my husband spoke to the hosts the following day and turns out there was another thermostat hiding behind a curtain that we hadn't seen - problem solved! Only other thing I would say is that the road leading to the farm is very pot-holey and could do with a repair. This cottage is ideal for couples and a dog (we took our little dog with us too). Recommend going to the moors for a walk. Also recommend going into Haworth (we actually spent most of our time there when we were out). A few (dog friendly) eateries worth a mention - Haworth Old Hall (owners are a delight and very tasty food), the Hawthorn (amazing steaks from charcoal grill), The Fleece Inn (yummy pies). Also worth popping to the chocolate shop in Howarth and picking up a box of their signature salted toffee and coconut oil truffles (shop is not dog friendly- but the lady working there is lovely). Thank you for a wonderful stay and we cannot wait to return again! Nikki, Joe and Snoopy x

The Retreat is a fabulous large cottage that is renovated to a very high standard.

The cottage marries the traditional and contemporary very well and this makes for an extremely clean and comfortable stay. The view from the cottage is spectacular and whilst the cottage stands on its own, surrounded by fields, it is easily accessible from the road and ten minutes to Hebden Bridge which is gorgeous. It is also not much further to Haworth (Bronte fame). The sheep are entertaining and birds of prey could be seen regularly. The Retreat is fully equipped and where the owners say that they have thought of everything - they really have. The kitchen is wonderful, the bedrooms are lovely with very comfy beds and sparkling linens and the bathrooms are spotless. My mother, who is less mobile, appreciated the downstairs bedroom and bathroom, although, as the details note, there are a few steps inside the property. We really enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings and the summer house was very nicely stocked with fluffy towels and robes. The owners, Mark and Joanne were very welcoming and clearly take great pride in ensuring their guests are happy and well catered for. We were treated to a welcome pack and home made cookies on arrival which was a nice treat. All-in-all, were have nothing but good things to say about The Retreat and fully recommend for a fantastic Yorkshire vacation.

The property itself was lovely, however, ten minutes before leaving we were contacted by Mark (the owner) claiming we had damaged the hot tub two nights previously.

It was not clear to us why Mark did not discuss this directly with us at the time. Mark claimed that we had broken a piece off the hot tub and that this would cost £500 but that he was willing to reduce this to £250. I discussed with the group who confirmed they had not broken the hot tub piece and we were luckily able to provide time-stamped photos showing that this piece was missing on our arrival. We assumed this would be the end of it, however, Mark refused to accept these photos and over the next few days, we were contacted repeatedly by Mark over the phone, at 10pm at night as he continued to push his narrative that this was our fault and try to get us to accept the blame and pay the fee (despite the photos). Mark suggested the only solution was to go to court if we did not pay the money and he suggested we could not leave a negative review in light of the fact the property was clean. In addition to the above, we were told we would be charged for four broken glasses in the property itself (which would be covered under ordinary wear and tear in all other properties we have stayed in - of which there have been many). It's a shame as the property itself was lovely, however, we would not stay at the Retreat or any other property owned by Mark again.
