What our customers say about their holidays

    • Paul - Verified booking

We booked the same cottage that we rented last year.

It’s very compact but it does the job for the week and the location is convenient and quiet. Last year after our stay we were asked to write a review - and generally I gave a good overall rating. I did however give the owner a private snagging list of things we thought would be helpful for them to know and which would hopefully make other guests have a better experience. Little things like the knobs on the inside of the bathroom door were pulling off and the toilet roll holder on the wall was very loose and near to falling off. There was no veg peeler in the kitchen drawer and no small oven trays to cook food on in the oven so we had to use the huge grill pan instead. The fridge is a larder fridge with no freezer compartment. The toaster was also faulty with the heating elements only working on 3 sides. Returning to the same property this year we found the issues in the bathroom have been addressed however, we were disappointed to find that the kitchenette is exactly as it was. Fortunately we brought with us our own utensils and disposable metal trays. There were no oven gloves available and the washing up liquid was watered down. After our visit last year the owners of the property probably thought they’d never see us again and probably thought the missing/faulty items in the kitchenette were too minor to bother with. I’m of a different opinion and feel strongly enough to put my views into my public review. Additionally the property is quite dusty this visit and overall looks less well cared for. The yard outside is a jungle of weeds and very uninviting and one of the neighbours was very unwelcoming and told us we shouldn’t be parking on the cobbles. Our decision is that we won’t be returning to this particular property again.

This was our first proper winter and Christmas Break away from Kent.

And I am delighted to report that our stay at NI Cottage was wonderful. And we would stay again. For our needs it was perfect. Despite howling winds and snow dusting the surrounding countryside. We stayed effortlessly warm and snug in the cosy enclave of this cottage. The walls being constructed of stone and 2 feet thick and double glazing all around. You could not hear the howling wind. All facilities for a home from home experience were in place, cosy and characterful in this listed property. The location is perfectly placed in the hills outside of the picturesque villages of Haworth (15 min walk) and Oxenhope. With excellent choices of watering holes and restaurants. And within earshot and view of the local Heritage Steam Railway. Which was very busy with Elf and Santa Express excursions. To hear the iconic sounds and sights of a Steam Train chugging and puffing it's way through the valley was a delightful backdrop to the peace and quiet of this location during our stay! We cannot recommend this location enough. It suited us as we like to explore and walk, and partake of the local offerings of real ale and good local food. We cannot recommend the Steam Packet Brewery in Haworth enough. To be able to then retreat to the peace and quiet of the cottage was great. The owners lived on site, next door in an enviable traditional stone historic farmhouse and were on hand to check in with us to see if everything was OK. If you are the type of people who are looking for a quiet cosy retreat. Are happy keeping your own company and don't need all the bells and whistles of a busy resort location on your doorstep. Then this is the place for you.

We arrived to the property and the owner was in the home which he admitted had not been cleaned as his 'help' had not arrived.

There were hairs in the ensuite sink, crumbs and dog hairs throughout the entire property and the kitchen sink and worktops had not been cleaned. The ensuite shower cannot be used as the water does not get hot. The barbecue had not been cleaned. There is a broken chair on the patio which cannot be used as it isn't safe. There was a blockage within the manhole cover which caused the downstairs to become flooded via the toilet with waste water soaking into the carpet. The owner left us to clean this up after the flood and did not check on us at all after he had arranged for the blockage to be cleared. We were charged for the drainage company costs and money taken from our account without our consent. The blockage was blamed on us with no proof that we had done anything to cause it

A warm welcome was provided on arrival by the owners.

Very useful advice was given about walking trails in the area. The cottage provided a very comfortable stay, and the welcome pack was such a nice touch. Lots of leaflets and ideas were provided inside the cottage. The bed was so comfortable! The cottage was tastefully decorated with some very nice touches to remind you were in Yorkshire! The Alma Inn nearby , with its superb food, provided ample opportunities for breakfast and meals during the day. This is a great location for visiting local attractions, including The Bronte Parsonage. The Old Bridge Inn in Ripponden provided a great starting point for walks along the River Ryburn...and provided good food at the end of the walks.

We had a wonderful time in the cottage, hunkered down in heavy snow.

John the owner was warm and welcoming, as were everyone in the surrounding cottages. We were provided with a lovely array of provisions. The cottage was small but warm and we had everything we needed. The garden was safe and enclosed for the dog. The area was beautiful. John was very considerate both to us and his former guest, liaising between us to ascertain what leeway could be made during our stays, if required, due to the tricky weather conditions. This is a place we would certainly recommend for its homeliness. We live only 30 minutes away and stayed while we were having renovations on our own home. Pity we haven't any more planned as we would love to come back here.
