What our customers say about their holidays

The barn was clean and tidy however we found it to be extremely cold. Having never used a log burning stove before we ran out of fire lighters on the 1st morning and the heating unit did not work. After speaking to the housekeeper (a number of hours after we tried to make contact) we were told where we could find more firelighters (not sure why we were only left with half a packet to use in the first place). They were outside in the cleaners storage barn however by this time we had just been using the bedroom that evening. The log burner was nice however it did not warm the entire barn and the heating did not work at all. When asked how to use the heating/air con unit the housekeep was unable to tell us so we were left cold. We were both actually quite disappointed. When speaking to the housekeeper she seemed shocked we had used the half pack of firelighters, I would suggest providing instructions of how many you would assume we needed to use and possibly instructions on how to get the heating unit to work. Lovely barn but we were glad to get back home. Not good value for money at all.

The property is in a lovely location and was convenient for all we wanted to do. It is private and has lovely gardens. It is also clean, comfortable and well stocked. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I think there are one or two things that let it down slightly. Some of the pots and pans need replacing. A knife had the end missing, the toilet brush needs replacing. One of the wooden outside chairs is broken. Small things but for the price of the property all should be in order. The shower in the bedroom is awaiting renewal. The main concern was the failure of the housekeeper to return calls either when we were trying to find out about the key on arrival and to find out what to do with the key as we were leaving early. Luckily the gardener was on site and said she would look after the key. Then the housekeeper turned up so she had got our message but failed to answer it. It seemed a bit chaotic in terms of this aspec of the booking. Otherwise Rural Retreats we’re helpful when we reported that we couldn’t contact the housekeeper.

Absolutely perfect place for a dog friendly break. We have just booked for next year which says it all really! The barn is lovely, the garden is absolutely beautiful even without the luxury of the adjoining paddock. Our pooch could not believe his luck! Everything in great condition and perfectly clean, and the welcome hamper was very generous. We did walks along the coast and Alfriston - all lovely & we were lucky with the weather. Couple of things that could be useful to know ahead of time: the freezer is tiny, there is only one small frying pan so depending on your plans you might want to bring your own; and if you have a dog you may want to bring all your own provisions as the village shop and closest farm shops don't allow dogs into the building.
