What our customers say about their holidays

    • Tom - Verified booking

While well appointed with the pool room and sky sports useful given the bad weather, our stay was thoroughly disappointing.

The property was not clean, to the standard you would expect from a holiday let, and is overly dominated by the owners style and very old decor. There was a rusty, open razor blade left by the sink, and my son had a long pin lodged in his foot from the living room carpet within minutes. We spent the first night cleaning which is not a fair exchange of value for the hefty price tag. The fridge was dirty, there were cob webs everywhere. The toilets were soiled with hair (and worse) and the cheap towelling needed to have its tags removed. We had concerns that the hot tub did not appear to have had its chemicals added - it distinctly felt like ‘fresh’ water. This might not all be the owners fault. As a new property they should have been better served by Sykes in terms of advice of deep cleans and decor, rather than carefully constructing photos which distract from the problems at The Hideaway. I have given extensive feedback including photos, and for transparency received a moderate (in my opinion insufficient) rebate, but future potential l bookings should get some commitments from Sykes that previously raised concerns have all been addressed, as this is not a 5-tick property based on our experience (including users as a very happy user of Sykes cottages, without complaint.

Welcome pack was excellent , the bed itself was very comfortable, and the hot tub itself was great and the location for walks was relaxing. However, there was only one breakfast cereal bowl which was a bit strange and very few utensils like table spoons and serving spoons so it was hard to serve anything up using small spoons, and there should be more tea cups as three is not enough. The TV should be bigger and the sofa smaller as we had to keep moving it to either open the doors or turn it to watch the TV. One major issue is the safety, you do not mention in the write up that it could be unsuitable for the older person or people with mobility problems, the stairs to get into the property are quite steep and if someone has a suitcase and is not so mobile this could be an issue. Getting into the hot tub could also have an impact as the steps are low and there is not a handrail. The bath also needs a handrail to get in and out of or change it for a shower cubicle which would be better and to get into the far side of the bed is also difficult. But for us it was fine but I can see potential problems with some but with some changes could be better.

We feel so lucky to have found The Garden Room. It’s the perfect little bolthole for a peaceful escape. Nestled in a secret location in a tiny village near an ancient church with a 1000-year old yew tree, it’s totally private. The cosy room has everything you need - it’s absolutely immaculate and beautifully appointed with a well-equipped kitchen and snuggly linens. The hot tub is absolutely superb - properly hot and spacious with powerful roiling bubbles. We visited in late October and the weather was appalling, so we couldn’t enjoy the delightful garden as much as we would have liked, but it was lovely to gaze out onto. We did get out on one wonderful circular hike between downpours with our little dog up to Ditchling Beacon from a public footpath just yards from the door - gorgeous views at the top. The generous welcome treats were well beyond our expectations - we are so grateful and we didn’t even have to go out shopping for basics after arriving! Great pub food, groceries and beaches are just a short drive away. We definitely plan to return.

Outstanding in every way……5 star plus! The hosts, Liz & husband have thought of everything you could possibly need & more providing a generous hamper of delicious goodies including a beautiful home made cake along with essentials such as eggs, milk, butter, bread along with many other items. it really was such a lovely welcome & much appreciated. We stayed as a family of 6 adults & found the cottage & garden room to be very comfortable, spotlessly clean, with luxurious beds & linens located in a lovely location not too far a drive into Lewes (approx 18 mins). The addition of the hot tub for the garden room was great! My husband & I are retired hoteliers (March 2022) with 40 years experience in hospitality; this self catering property is the best we have experienced. Really can’t think of anything that could have further enhanced our stay. Thank you very much Liz & husband for a wonderful break, we all agreed we would love to plan a another trip, although I guess the weather would never be as glorious!
