What our customers say about their holidays

    • David - Verified booking

Abbotts Manor It is difficult to think of sufficient superlatives to describe our family stay at Abbotts Manor.

My wife and I chose it for a delayed celebration of our Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary from last March and we are so pleased we did. Accompanied by our two sons and daughter with their spouses and our six granddaughters the fourteen of us with their four dogs spent a week at Abbotts Manor during late May/early June 2022 and the facilities were fantastic. Obviously, different members of our family have different interests such as countryside walks or the Jurassic cliffs at Charmouth whereas our youngest granddaughters also like swimming and all activities were readily accessible within a maximum thirty-minute car journey as are the seaside resorts of Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Lyme Regis, Beer, and Exmouth. Abbotts Manor gives one a feeling of spacious luxury in an old-fashioned way which is a delight, and the huge garden has many areas where you can enjoy the sun or shade whichever you prefer. All the bedrooms are spacious with nearly all on suite and the dining room with its large table enabled us to arrange for a chef to provide a celebratory dinner party on one of the nights with everyone seated around one huge table. Prior to dinner we had arranged with a local photographer and the garden provided him with some lovely opportunities for the photographs. By the end of the week the granddaughters had renamed the morning room as the granddaughter’s room so that gives an indication of just how much they enjoyed the family holiday at Abbotts Manor. We are especially grateful to Jessica the Housekeeper who never interfered but was always available to answer any questions or help and she even advised us of the Combe Raleigh Village Jubilee Beacon and fireworks display that we were able to enjoy from the garden after our family bar b q on our last night. Many thanks, David & Sandra Clemett.

By Steven E on 24-May-2018 Lovely House - perfect for big families. Stayed at Knowles House with 5 other family members including elderly parents and a dog. Wonderful house with a terrific garden. Weather was perfect and garden was superb for chilling, sunbathing or even Yoga. Met by the owners who gave us a guided tour and explained everything we needed to know from the heating to the recycling. Lovely clean bedrooms with a twin on the ground floor with its own small lounge area perfect for the elderly who have difficulty with stairs. Layout of the kitchen with the cookers and crockery, separate sink room and a third utility room with large fridge and freezers take some getting used to but no big deal. There’s a standard cooker / low level grill if your not confident with using the Aga. Big flat screen TV in the lounge and plenty of small ones in the bedrooms if your that desperate to watch TV. Showers in the bedrooms were very good and we had no issues with hot water no matter what the time of day. Lovely walk for dog walkers alongside local river one minute from the house. Journeys out to local coastal towns didn’t take long in a car. Make your own mind up about the best ones to visit - we liked Beer but won’t be rushing back to Seaton! Lovely coastal walks between Seaton and Branscombe. Took a local taxi (The very helpful Bert from Seaton Taxi’s who took all 6 of us+ Dog) to the Ship Inn at Axmouth for a couple of evening meals - Quality food, highly recommended - make sure you book. Would definitely recommend this house. Show less Stayed: May 2018 Thank Steven E

Young Jessica and her team had done a fantastic job of preparing the house prior to our arrival.

A decorated Christmas tree, and festive decorations adorned various areas of the house. Unlike some rental properties, Abbots Manor has a total homely feel about it. From the minute you walk through the door you can sense the warm cosy atmosphere. All the bedrooms were spacious, spotlessly clean, well presented, and with plenty of storage space. The lounge and cinema room were two areas where the family could relax with a good film, or fireside chat. One family member is a professional musician so made good use of the piano. The kitchen was very well equipped with all the utensils you could possible wish for, and the two dishwashers made cleaning up after a meal an absolute breeze. The dinning room was equally comfortable, and seated everyone with ease. The house was beautifully warm throughout, so much so that we had to turn some of the radiators off because of the fairly mild temperatures outside. Likewise we only lit the wood burning stove twice, mainly for ambience rather than need because of the mild temperatures and warmth of the house. We only had one issue whilst we were there, and that related to the Aga, but Jessica attended the premises within minutes of contacting her only to find it was merely the fuse box had tripped. We had a fantastic family Christmas break at Abbots Manor, and hope to return at a different time of the year to explore the surrounding countryside and numerous footpaths in the area. Overall I would have no hesitation in highly recommending Abbots Manor for a stay anytime of the year.

The old police house was a great place it was very clean, tidy and in a great location.

The beds were very comfortable. There was more than enough cutlery, and dinnerware for all the family there were even kids cutlery and dinnerware. The notice board was great as gave us useful information so did the handbook that was left but really needed updating and it was contradicting what was on the notice board. The outdoor toilet is great addition.there was a cupboard full of games most were old but still fun to play. The only downside to the property was the lack of door handles, out of the three bedroom doors upstairs only one room had a door handle making if difficult for privacy. One of the bedrooms was also missing a blind so got a lot of light coming into the room in the morning. There were no instructions for the washer/dryer so had to Google them. There were pegs in the property but no clothes lines so this made it difficult to dry clothes when the weather outside was wet. The stairs in the property are steep and could really do with a handrail all the was down. The stairs in the back garden are also very steep and narrow but when you make it up on to the decking it is very lovely and big area for all the family to set out and enjoy. Overall this was a great property I would definitely stay at this property again.

Reviewed 30 August 2017 Beautiful Victorian Home I stayed at Knowles with 11 family members including my elderly parents and children and it was a wonderful break for all of us. Knowles is a beautiful Victorian home that the owners once lived in with their parents. The house is very comfortable and cosy and each room has been left sympathetic to its origin which we all found lovely. The garden is amazing, the owners employ a gardener who clearly loves the garden as his own and keeps it pristine with beautiful flower beds and even a cottage garden with herbs etc growing in it which we were able to use. We were very lucky with the weather so we chose to stay at the house most days (we usually eat out a lot) but because the garden was so lovely we chose most days to hang around and eat Alfresco. The only negative I can think of is that we left our 2 dogs at home, what a mistake, they would have been in seventh heaven.
