What our customers say about their holidays

    • Paul - Verified booking

Glanville House is in a superb position right on the inner harbour wall of lovey Mevagissey and has all you will need to make a very comfortable and pleasant stay.

You are literally a short stroll from the centre of this small fishing village, with plenty of choices for lunch and dinner, numerous pubs, lots of small cafes serving cream teas, an excellent small local store and veg shop, there are very good places to eat including two small niche restaurants, The Salamander and Alvorada, a lovely Portuguese establishment, while on the main quay The Sharksfin and The Harbour Tavern offer varied good quality menus in a convivial atmosphere, for take-away the Fishermans Chippy and The Fish Grill will not disappoint. The front entrance to Glanville House is on The Cliff, part of the Coastal Path, be aware there are two ways to reach the front door, we called them the ‘Short Leg’ and the ‘Long Leg’, one is a steep sharp climb from East Quay, while the other is longer but a gentler rise from the Fountain Inn. The village is small, but it is surrounded by places of interest that all make for a very nice day out, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project and Pinetum Gardens are all close by, and the fantastically quaint Charlestown with its tiny historical harbour is well worth a visit, and where many seafaring TV programmes have been filmed, including Poldark. We were very surprised to find old postcards of Glanville House dating back to the 1900’s, and to see that at least from the outside, it has not changed much, obviously the inside it has been modernised and refurbished, with large comfortable bedrooms, fully furnished living areas and a fully equipped kitchen, the external large open terrace was a real bonus, whilst it remains private, even though we are so close to the harbour quay. There were a few small minor niggles during our stay, a broken shower control, loose toilet seat, broken bedroom blind, but these did not in the slightest spoil our stay, although they could have been fixed quite easily, also felt the contact was very minimal, which is no bad thing, but almost felt impersonal, but do not let these influence you, this house will suit your every need in a holiday rental, we are sure you will not be disappointed, and this small fishing village is well worth the cost.

The location of Puffin Cottage is perfect and the views are wonderful.

It was lovely to sit on the window seat in the bedroom to watch the views over the harbour. It is a very steep walk up to the cottage but we were made aware of this and it did not pose too much of a problem. There is no available parking near to the cottage which is a challenge when offloading luggage. Again, we were made aware of this. Puffin Cottage is extremely clean and comfortable but we did experience a few minor issues. When we arrived, there were no keys in the key holder but after a phone call to housekeeper, she arrived with a key within 10 minutes. We had only one key to the outer porch door and nothing for the front door - this did not really pose a problem but, had I stayed at the cottage alone (without my husband), I would have felt vulnerable leaving the front door unlocked. There was a very long list of instructions which we were made aware of after booking. Shoes must be removed indoors, all surfaces are covered with protective fabric - the tables, the sofas, the window seats and the dressing table, which seems a little excessive. The main bedroom has a very large comfortable bed with beautiful white bed linen. However, the bed is a little too large for the room and there is only one bedside table. It is a real squeeze to get past the wardrobe as this is so close to the bed. Both bedrooms would be much more comfortable if the locked cupboards could be opened and used as storage which would clear more space. We stayed in the cottage from 28th December over the New Year period and were a little disappointed that there were no festive decorations and no welcome pack. The bathrooms are extremely clean and the fixtures high quality with powerful showers. The kitchen is very well kitted out but we were disappointed with the chunky heavy wine glasses so we purchased 4 wine glasses for our use and left them for the owner to keep. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Puffin Cottage but we did feel that we were staying in the owners home, with the locked cupboards and the protected surfaces, rather than being welcomed as paying guests.

This was a lovely holiday home right on the harbour side with a real wow factor.

The positives were it’s location in the town, size and character. However there were a few issues which really detracted from our holiday; 1. The beds were really uncomfortable. This was reported a number of times by previous guests but clearly nothing done to improve it. We were a groups of 6 adults and we could not use the double bed in the 2nd floor bedroom due to the fact the mattress springs and bed movement made it extremely uncomfortable. This meant we had to use the twin beds which were not suitable for adults 6 feet tall and over. This was really disappointing and we felt let down by the owner and Cornish Cottages; 2. The property is described as having two showers, one over the bath. Whilst true, the one over the bath is not particularly useable as it had no shower curtains and was only part of the bath. Therefore 6 adults had to queue to use the only walk in shower on the 2nd floor; 3. The rear patio doors were broken and could not be properly locked…again previously reported but nothing done to remedy it; and 4. The property had a leak from the roof which caused puddles of water in the kitchen. The caretaker attended and admitted this was an issue that they were aware of evidenced by the water marks on the ceiling. They kindly left a bottle of wine as an apology. This is potentially a lovely property but needs urgent love and attention. We left disappointed as we paid good money expecting the obvious issues to have been resolved by either the owner or Cornish Cottages.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay in Puffin Cottage.

Although it states it is a compact cottage, there is everything you need for an enjoyable stay and there was ample space for 4 adults. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well appointed. It is at the top of a very steep hill, but well worth the climb for the magnificent views over the harbour. I would say that if you are not very fit or fully mobile, this is probably not an ideal location for you. The second bedroom on the ground floor which is a double, does not have much space around the bed, but is perfectly adequate and the comfort of the bed makes up for the lack of space. There is no wardrobe in the second bedroom, but it does have hanging space and 2 large drawers under the bed for storing clothes. We did not have a problem with this and my husband does tend to overpack!!! There is plenty of space and storage in the king sized room upstairs. The kitchen is well equipped and outside the kitchen is a lovely decked patio area with a table and 4 chairs for al fresco dining. There are lovely pubs/hotels in St Mawes where you can eat (we did have to book due to Covid19) but managed to get in. It is a lovely walk along the harbour front with beautiful views and plenty of space to sit on the beach. This is very pebbly in places, but so lovely. A small harbour town, relatively quiet but perfect. We would definitely return to St Mawes and Puffin Cottage. Excellent!!!!!

Pentire is a beautiful, spacious and modern property.

The bedrooms and kitchen/ dining area was a decent size for 6 adults. Please note that only 5 adults can sit comfortably on the sofa. The house was well-equipped with cutlery, utensils and cookware. We found instructions for the appliances in a drawer towards the end of the holiday. Having these placed on the counter upon arrival would have been very helpful. We appreciate its personal preference, but most of our party found the mattresses too hard and woke up with sore backs. A mattress topper would have been greatly appreciated. At the end of our stay, we followed the instructions, which had been left by John Bray Holidays, to remove the sheets from the beds and towels from the bathrooms. This was not a relaxing way to end the holiday, especially as checkout time is 9am. There either needs to be a later checkout time or do not ask guests to start the process of laundry. Please note, Pentire is advertised on the John Bray website as having parking for 3 cars and check-in time as 4pm. Our welcome email stated 2 cars and check-in time as 4:30pm. Please update the advert or the welcome email. Thank you. Overall, our stay at Pentire was enjoyable. It has a secure garden for any guests who wish to bring a dog. A downstairs toilet and utility room, which included a washing machine and tumble dryer were nice additions to the property.
