What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mike Clark - Verified booking

West Gorton My wife and I have been to this property 3 times before with our dogs and we enjoy the peace and quiet as well as the wonderful views. This time we found the property refurbished with a lovely new shower on the ground floor. The floors had also been refurbished – laminate flooring downstairs and new carpets upstairs. New double glazing in the two dormer windows and the bathroom window downstairs. All in all, there was a real improvement in the place. After settling in on our arrival, we tried to turn the heating on as it was quite cold, but it wouldn’t come on. Instead, we lit the open fire which was lovely. The hot water was intermittent – it came on and went off quickly with the result we had cold showers on the first two days of our holiday. We didn’t worry too much as we were warm with the open fire. The Sunday was quite cold for the time of year and again we tried the central heating and water, but it was the same problem. We called the owner who was excellent and she came up immediately and tried to sort the problem. In the end she got the plumber to come up early on the Monday morning. The problem was simply a lack of pressure in the system and was sorted there and then for which we were most grateful. From this point on there were no further issues with the hot water or central heating. We had a fabulous week at West Gorton weather-wise and we enjoyed our holiday there yet again. The rear garden was lovely to sit out in with the picnic table. The entire perimeter is well fenced and safe for our two Golden Retrievers to be let out. On previous visits, the picnic table was at the front of the cottage enjoying the views of the Cairngorms. A few comments though if we may? Despite the major refurbishment, there were a few minor comments we should like to make. My wife is a truly excellent cook and we do like to have the best of both worlds by eating in and at the same time going out to local restaurants. The cooker at West Gorton is extremely old and, in our opinion, badly needs replacing – a solid hob and would be very expensive to run in this day and age and the cost of a new induction hob would almost be recovered in energy savings in just one year. The temperature markings for the oven are totally obliterated with all the cleaning and wear and tear over the years and it was impossible to work out what the real temperature of the oven actually was and so was hit and miss with the cooking. Likewise with all the solid hob rings were old and difficult to control again with no markings to tell you which hob was on and it was trial and error to find out which ring was actually on or not as the case may be. They take ages to heat up and cool down for cleaning purposes and are exceptionally difficult to control. The toilet seats also need attention – the one upstairs has only one out of four “buffers” which prevent the lower lid coming into direct contact with the porcelain bowl of the WC and in the case of the toilet downstairs, the lower lid won’t stay upon its own. Two very simple items to fix, but important ones in our opinion. My wife and I stay in a large number of dog friendly cottages all over the UK and feel that we do have many comparisons from which to draw and base our opinions. Most cottage lets have a very comprehensive notes and instructions on the running of the premises including the heating etc which we didn’t get at West Gorton. Although there are the very basic guidance notes left pinned to a notice board, there are no detailed instructions regarding the heating controls etc which is a pity. The Wi-Fi which is done through a dongle is very expensive and not very practical in this day and age. There are very few cottage lets now which don’t supply free Wi-Fi and although there is a very good 4G signal at West Gorton, the Wi-Fi is a very important issue in this day and age – even on holiday when one is finding out information about the surrounding area! Despite what would appear to be a few negative comments, we did have a lovely holiday and as you can see from the number of times we have been here, we do love it!

Vielen herzlichen Dank!

Property not as described on web site, especially the back garden.

Lots of noise and smells from garage from as early as 7am. Garden decking area and hot tub which had the lid screwed down and obviously hasn’t been in operation for a number of years. No sail to protect from sun- missing. Table and chairs seen better days. All this looks lovely on web site but in reality is a complete disaster. Game Room/ Garage an absolute disgrace as it hasn’t been cleaned for a number of years, dust and cobwebs everywhere. Sliding patio on to decking area are absolutely disgusting as the bottom rail which the door slides on is absolutely covered in dirt and debris. The top of fridge freezer was absolutely covered in dust and had not been cleaned in some time. Top of curtain poles were so dirty when we ran hands over the top of them, they were black with dirt and dust. The shower areas in the house all need to be ripped out and replaced due to shower door falling off the bottom runner a number of times during our stay which would be an H&S issue if it landed on your feet. Regarding shower trays and skirting boards next to them they are covered in mould. One of the tiles on floor of small bathroom has a hole in it this could be another H&S issue if you caught your toe in it. We know procedure to contact the maintenance team but felt they had not carried out what was needed before our stay. We have photographic evidence of all the above unfortunately these can not be posted on website. We will forward the photos to the Sykes website. We payed £1500 for our one week stay due to the condition of this property it is only worth £700. Please don’t waste your hard earned money on this property as you will be sadly disappointed.

Plenty of room for us all to spread out - we especially liked the well fitted kitchen and utility.

One of us spent a lot of time in the snug reading books in perfect isolation. Beds were comfy and everything was clean and tidy with clear instructions provided prior to our stay. 2 Weeks after lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in Scotland we appreciated the fact that extra care and time had been taken for cleaning - we were asked to arrive after 6 pm instead of 3 pm and the hot tub was not in use, which was understandable. Back garden has everything - garden table and chairs, bench, washing line, apples and pears ripening and a row of trees which screen the petrol station behind. We filled up the bird feeders and enjoyed watching our feathered friends. Wildlife watching and watersports were well booked up but we followed many circular trails from the Ordnance Survey Pathfinder Guide for the Cairngorms - Glen Feshie, Loch an Eilein, along the Speyside Way through Anagach Woods to Cromdale and back to Grantown. Highlight of that walk was a Scotch Argus butterfly on the banks of the river. Also in the Spey Valley we saw ospreys, golden eagles and red squirrels. Gardens at Ballindalloch Castle were a delight plus Pictish stones on the way to Lossiemouth where we had evening chips by the sand dunes watching surfers on the incoming tide. Good cycling routes and secure storage for bikes in the garage. A great location with a 2-minute walk through the alley to a row of welcoming shops and the Co-op for essentials.

On arrival 1st impressions were garden overgrown with weeds everywhere, windows were filthy and covered in cobwebs.

On entry cottage tidy but wooden floors had not been cleaned and were appalling. Checked the mop which was brick hard and hadn't been used for a long time. We had to wash the floors before we could do anything. Tv's not working and remotes with no batteries in them! Phoned owner and no empathy about start of holiday, went out to back garden, hot tub not in use but filthy anyway, only four chairs for a 8 person occupancy! 1 chair broken and 2 covered in bird droppings so only one in use, really unfortunate because location was good and facilities in cottage ok but need to change cleaning company it was a disgrace, also no check in or check out forms to sign regarding Covid. They had 8 hrs to clean the cottage it should have been spotless, also couldn't use games room in garage, it was covered in garden rubbish and leaves and tables were filthy, really not good enough for the money we paid. Also by mistake left nice cake and chocolates in fridge which were presents for neighbours, certainly not for the cleaners! We cleaned the cottage before we left and took photos at start of holiday and also end to show how it should have looked, also we go to numerous cottages every year and this was the 1st cottage with no welcome pack not even a teabag, poor show all round, one very dissapointed family.
